connects about 3 mbit slower than my Tplink

      This is a TP-Link.

      • +7

        ROFL u just pwn3d that n00bcannon

anyway i have this router at home, have had it for a few years now (got it for $140 back a couple years ago), never had a single issue or dropout and speed and wifi range has been great so it's served me very well

      • -6

Haha. Fine, my bad. It connects about 3MBit slower than my DLINK DSL-2544N.

        • Still slow modem though. 3Mbits is a lot when you're talking about the difference between 9 & 12.

        • Nice try but salvage failed

        • @jonathonsunshine: I found it faster than an oldish Billion and DLINK.

What are your connection stats on the two? You might want to adjust the SNR tolerance.

      • you bully

      • Hey TA, any deals around for the Asus DSL-AC68U ??

        Cheers

        • +1

Not a deal, but a suggestion:

Setup an alert on ebay for this make/model - you might get lucky (I had someone go to NBN and sell his to me for $50, but it now - surely would have made double if he had it bidding)

        • Personally I use this
          Upgraded from Billion 7800NX.
          Wireless performance is MUCH stronger
          Rock solid connection.
I had to buy it from FutuOnline@Ebay (It's actually ShoppingExpress) for $284 during a 20% off selected stores (FutuOnline was participating).

There's a few on ebay now @ $308, there's an ASUS $30 cashback, so just under 10% off.

    • +5

Not only that, but it's also about 4 mbits slower than an Archer.

      • +4

i heard it was specifically 5 mbits slower than the D7 too ;)

      • +3

        I find it's a little slower than my ADSL2+.

      • +1

Not bad, that archer must have a good fire rate, and a stash of arrows!

    • +1

Sorry, banged it out to fast. It's 3Mbit slower than my DLINK DSL-2544N

      • +1

Serious question, does your dlink run hot to the touch?
My last dlink ran so hot you could slow cook eggs on it

        • just put my hand on it, definitely warm but not uncomfortable. I'm not worried about it. I've got it in bridge mode though so it would do less work than normal.

  • +8

This is a good, simple, reliable, good wifi range router. However, its ADSL only. With the NBN being rolled out, consider getting the VR600 which is ADSL/VDSL (NBN FTTN) or you might have to replace it again in a couple of years. Atleast check the NBN rollout map to be sure youre not in an area which is or currently in build for NBN

Its okay. Liberals are in power. My house is no longer on the list. Should be good for 20 years maybe.

      • +22

nah m8 Turncoat promised that all houses in Aus will have NBN by the end of 2016, so you'll have it up and running in 2 weeks max m8, Lib guarantee ;)

        • Thanks for trying to help.
          Too suburban for skymuster.
I live in the bennelong electoral Area, unfortunately the MP here (John Alexander) cares about building tennis courts everywhere rather than communication infrastructure.
So I guess I'm going to stick to my adsl :(

      • @cwongtech: Can you give some more details on the difference between the models/features? I would have thought connected as a bridge then it was just running as a router connected to the NBN device.

        • +1

Can you give some more details on the difference between the models/features?

I'm just poking fun at NBN.. that I'll never get it and so anthonywr's comment is irrelevant to me.
Still, if you're about to get the NBN, anthonywr does make a very good point.

I would have thought connected as a bridge then it was just running as a router connected to the NBN device.

Yup, if the router has a WAN port (i.e. allows internet connection via an ethernet port), it means you should be able to use it as a wireless router with an ethernet cable between this router and the NBN modem.

In this case, the D7 is capable of that (has an eWAN port). Means you'll need to have two devices, just like you say, D7 will be in bridge to handle the distribution as the router, the NBN modem will just handle the internet connection.

Anthonywr's suggestion is to use an all in one instead, use one device (VR600) that can act as the NBN modem in the future (IF you are getting it), as well as manage distribution as the router.

      • +1

Not to worry, they announced a brand new 'NBN tax' the other day so you should be up and going by the end of the week. Either that or they'll give themselves another pay rise…could go either way. :)

        • Bet they'll link NBN as a Labor initiative, then call it Labor's failed project too.

      • It's sad that this is true.

    • do all NBN technologies use the same modem type? I believe my area is getting HFC, so is that the same as what someone would buy for FTTP or FTTN?

      • +3

HFC would normally use a cable modem - so not the same as FTTP/FTTN

You would likely get one provided by your ISP though and could use normal router for Wifi

        • +2

so i could use, say, an Archer D7 for the wifi?

        • +2

@Iggemo: Yep, you would just put the modem into bridging mode (I can't remember which, Google would know) so that the two routers / modem routers don't clash.

        • +1

@buckster: nbn hfc modems are already in "bridged" mode :)

    • I will have the NBN in 2 weeks + 4 months apparently. Close enough Turncoat.
My D7 be up for sale.

    • +2

i have this model of router. it works on NBN just fine.

      • Wow, can you advise what connection speed you're running and settings of the router? e.g. 100/40mbps and Annex A? etc - First time I've heard it is VDSL/NBN compatible

        Cheers

        • +1

I have one of these. While I was on ADSL2, it worked fine as modem. I am now on FTTN, and using this as a router only, non-bridged (also no issues).

        • yep, ill tell u how its set up when i get home from work this evening,

edit: Im on FTTP, it is pretty awesome

    • I recently purchased the VR600 for the NBN compatibility and it's great. Not quite as many features as my 6 year old Draytek Vigor 2710 but a lot better WiFi performance.

    • +2

I just want to make clear what anthonywe is saying here.

This modem will work for: FTTP and ADSL
This modem will not work for: FTTB and FTTN

Even for incompatible types, people often bridge the modem they received from their ISP to this router.

more information can be found by searching whirlpool compliant nbn modem

      • Actually that's incorrect. It will work for VDSL2 (FTTN/FTTB) or ADSL2+. It won't work for FTTP: https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/fttn_registered_modem_router

        • +1

It has a WAN port, it will definitely work with FTTP.

        • -1

You're right. LAN 4 doubles as an EWAN port. So it'll work with all of them.. :)

        • +1

I appreciate your input. I think we both agree that the d7 works on FTTP now. However I would still be wary about guaranteeing that the D7 has Australian VDSL2 capabilities.

I was not able to find anyone say first hand they have had it working on FTTN/FTTB without using a different modem in bridge mode.

I am aware that the product is listed under VDSL in the product listing in the USA, however the product description lists:
Ethernet WAN (EWAN) offers another broadband connectivity option for connecting VDSL, cable or fiber modems
Implying that you require a different modem to connect to it.

        • -1

          From https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2564036

"On the box it states NBN Ready … FTTN/FTTB/FTTH/FTTP"

"You won't regret it. I bought mine with ADSL2+ still connected, and the transition to FTTN was smooth"

"i get the same sync with this modem on FTTN as i do with the Telstra Gateway Max and TG-1 which are known to sync good."

          Seems fairly guaranteed to me..

        • @Ryballs: thanks! Had trouble finding an example.

edit: actually that seems to be for a different modem.

    • The D7 can be operated in Broadband mode, with the WAN port connecting to another modem (.i.e. cable or NBN modem). Both my D7s had an NBN-ready sticker on the box.

With the NBN being rolled out

… and half of Australia still not connected to it

    • +1

      Completion date: Never.

      • +1

Soon it will announce that NBN to be scraped due to being an outdated technology.

NBN mkII will be on the government's next "plan" .

        • +11

As soon as the liberals changed the nbn it was outdated.

  • where are these dispatched from and any idea how long it would take for a Perth delivery? Finally getting connected to Internet here on the 19th via skymuster.

    • +2

      Perth 2016: connects to Internet
      Perth 2017: AltaVista not supported

  • Had it for 12 months with no issues, then got a new laptop, and the thing would start to drop signal regularly. First the 5, then the 2.4 would go until I had to restart it. Tried several times to fix it with TP link help, but unfortunately I couldn't get it back to being reliable again.
I may just have been unlucky I guess.

    • Same here. Once i got more than 8 devices connected i started losing connection every now and then. Gonna upgrade to an asus router next.

    • sounds like its your laptops problem?

      • Nah i have 1 laptop. It's the number of devices and interference.

        • i was replying to never waz.

    • Same here

  • Pretty happy with it. 5 Gig wifi is sometimes slow to connect. Probz going on eBay in a month after NBN setup.

  • This thing would likely be 10x slower than my 4G modem

    • Yeah you can thank telstra for the topnotch phone lines for that.

  • I really want the VR2600 VDSL one (the VR600 is a bit older and slower), but I cant find many places that stock it for aus yet, let alone good price

  • Thanks TA picked one up

  • +1

If you are going on NBN FW 12/1 Mbps does it make any difference if you get a cheap router or a whizz-bang top of the range one? I'm not familiar with the technicalities at all but I'm thinking like this- if there is a 50kph speed limit why buy a Ferrari when a Picanto can easily exceed the limit?

  • Hi All,
    I am no tech savvy.
I am with Teltra NBN FTTP 25/5, has been using provided Telstra T-Gateway Technicolor WIFI router.
Tested speed thru LAN connection was around 24/4.
    WIFI connection slightly slower.
Thinking of getting this TP LINK, would it improve my WIFI connection speed? Thanks

    • +1

Wifi is average i used to have one and i replaced it with a Netgear D7000 which is a little bit better, i'm not sure how your setup would be if your not tech savvy, this is an ADSL2+ modem router, so although you can use it for just wifi/router… you might be better off keeping the telstra gateway and truning off its wifi and buying a better wifi access point.. or if you can, installing wifi access points on your ceiling like the unifi access points is a good option.

  • Great modem with easy to use interface with all the advanced features needed. Only issue, quite annoying actually the 5Ghz band drops out after a couple of weeks and requires a restart.

    • Slightly cheaper at umart

It's actually $40 more expense at Umart before shipping :)

      • True - only applies for those who can pick up from their stores :)
        Edit: Actually - I didn't read properly - fail > <

        • +1

          Pick up from umart $158
          Delivered from SE $118

  • I have this, have owned for about a year.

Great unit, but just be aware there is a known issue with the 5ghz band of the wifi dropping out (have to power cycle the modem for it to come back):

    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2511724
    http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2575074

I spoke to TP-Link live chat the other day as I was having this exact issue. They confirmed that it was a known issue and they emailed me a beta firmware which seems to have fixed the problem for me.

My guess is that the beta firmware I'm using will soon become 'official' as it looks like it has been around in beta form for a couple of months.

Just something to consider if you buy this.

  • I am using one, not bad for the price, much better than my optus one. yes ,the 5G is not very good, but optus is too slow to use 5G, 2.4 is way faster than optus' speed.
