  • Might want to put SSD in title

    • +1

I would be so surprised if a Dell XPS of those specs didnt

        • Like most slim laptops

        • +7

the DVD drive is just a massive waste of space, space that could be taken up by much sought after features like a bigger 80 watt hour battery, better cooling or a dedicated graphics chip.

        • +1

@mrdavedave: if im honest I missed that its a slim.

        • Many people have moved to using much better solutions such as USB drives.

        • +1

@Slippery Fish: Nonetheless it's rare to see an optical drive in new laptop's these days.

        • Jeez I can't remember the last time I used an optical drive for a computer… It's always been boot from USB

        • @scrimshaw:

Yep. I can't remember the last time I used a disc.

Whenever someone hands me a disc to send them files I blankly stare at them for a few seconds.

        • Needing an optical drive in 2016… Lol:)

        • @Brouw3r: I have morrowind goty on disk :)

        • During a laptop purchase a friend made a similar statement.

Friend stated "$xk for a laptop without a touchable screen, and no optical drive are you nuts?".

For some people, it's not about the performance or the functionality or the quality customer service. No, what they want is the gimmicks and fancy lights.

        • @Unknown1: no offence but I found that statment very arrogent.

An opticle drive isnt a gimmick, its the sort of thing some people want.

        • @Slippery Fish:

"No optical drive for 1800… Lol :)"

Please explain how that is not an arrogant statement? Especially, since it fails to consider the demand of the majority in a laptop market.

Today consumers demand thinner and lighter notebooks. Because of this, optical bay drives are removed to accomplish the desired product. This is a prime example of an opportunity cost.

That stated optical drives serve a purpose to minority of users, and are not classified as a gimmick. Instead, gimmicks on laptops are touch screens and backlit keyboards.

Futhermore, people requiring an optical drive can just purchase an external one can't they? All be it, at an extra cost. Though, people who cannot afford or are put off by a $50 optical drive should not be purchasing an $1800 laptop.

  • +7

I have this exact model. Extremely good if you mostly use it plugged in. From memory battery life is only 2-3 hours, partly due to the 4K screen. It has a full speed thunderbolt 3 port, so it's kinda future-proof.

      • +12

Not sure what you expected from a 4k, quad core slim laptop.

        • +5

          With dedicated graphics :)

        • +1

@mrdavedave: More appropriated to see these types of kit as "portable desktops", rather than laptops. :P

        • I have my Mac from 2011 with a quad core i7, 2880x1800 resolution, dedicated graphics (650m) and is very thin and quite light.

It gets easy 6-7h. And it's 5 years old.

          Just saying

        • +1

@cheesecactus: No dedicated graphics. Weight is about the same. Enjoy your limited software choices. :)

        • Even the new Macbook Pro with "bad battery life" gets double that or more.

        • +1

          @MrMcHairyHead:

          Macbook "Pro"

          No USB-A ports
          No SD card Reader
          Slower GPU

Costs more than 2x as much

        • @psdillon:

Well i have a dedicated card which was good for it's time (NVIDIA 650m). Also it can run windows if i need any specialist software.

All I'm saying is this 2016 dell is a bit lacking in the battery department even when compared to laptops from 2011.

I did just get a ThinkPad X1 carbon. So it's probably time to sell the Mac.

        • @cheesecactus: Nowhere near as powerful as this machine with 4K…

        • @malouphix:

Obviously not. It's a 5 year old laptop

    • +2

Most reviews say the battery life is much longer (obviously if you're gaming or something it will be short).

EG Notebookcheck's "WiFi Surfing" test gives 5 hours on the UHD version, and 9 hours on the FHD version:

      UHD: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-XPS-15-9550-i7-512GB-UHD-I…

      FHD: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-XPS-15-9550-Core-i7-FHD-No…

EDIT: the 9 hour FHD is with the 84 whr battery. You can get the FHD laptop with a 56whr battery, in which case the life would be approximately 6 hours.

      • Yeah you're right. I take it back, I was mistaken. Not sure why I had that figure in my head. At one stage I was thinking about going to the smaller battery to fit in a SATA SSD, but that would should still be about 4 hours with the 4K screen. Idunno.

If a mod could delete the battery part of my comment above I'd appreciate it.

        • No you might be right, I just assumed that it's not possible to get the 56 whr battery with the UHD screen. If you did, the battery life would be really bad. I don't really have any way to check this unfortunately, but I also read somewhere that you can replace the second battery with another slot (as you said) - is that what you did?.

In any case, the laptops that OP has posted all have the 84 whr battery which should give 5 hours of battery.

edit: re-read your comment, if you did get the 56 whr battery with UHD then you would get approximately 3.3 hours of battery just surfing wifi which matches your guess earlier

        • @drojf: Yes if you swap the larger battery for the smaller one, there is space for a 2.5" drive. As well as the battery you'd have to buy the HDD frame and Dell's funky interpretation of a SATA cable. Never got round to it though.

        • I get 4 -5 hours with the 84W battery just wifi'ing on the net and watching the odd vid so your about right. that 4K screen just sucks the life out of the battery.

    • Same. Wish the battery life was a few hours longer! Also not a big fan (no pun intended) of the ventilation being on the bottom of the laptop. Whenever I leave my laptop on a soft surface like a bed or sofa it gets insanely hot because of the lack of airflow.

    • Dell makes a portable 60,000mAh battery powerbank, that can be used to charge this or USB devices.

  • +6

Now sure who reported insufficient qty but should probs read the rules again.

  • +5

$500 less for the FHD version with half the RAM and SSD I think is better value. 4K on a 15.6" screen is pointless.

    • It has the 56WHr battery though, 8 vs 6 hours of wifi browsing, if that matters to you

      • should be able to pick up the 84Whr battery on eBay for not a significant price

    • for the people who can afford the extra $500 and dont mind sacrificing a bit battery life, definitely go for 4k! if i dont already have an xps13 with a uhd screen , i will certainly get this xps15 especially at this price.

      • +1

4K on a 15.6" screen is still pointless

        • It's 282 DPI so not pointless. This is barely at the level of being unable to discern pixels.

        • +5

Agree, with the current state of Windows. Worthwhile on a Macbook.

        • +2

Sadly, pixel peepers will love it, and some people can't live without touch despite this having one of the best windows trackpads.
Also 4K is technically more room for multitasking even if you can't see what you are working with…

        • What size screen does it need to be pointful?

        • @lostn:

          65" :P

        • +1

          @Diji1:
When you take Steve seriously, you also need to consider the distance between your eyes and the display.
Otherwise, you would need a 64K on your 60" TV from 1" away!! Have fun
          Btw it's an iTV

        • +2

Wrong, it depends on the task.

I have a 4K laptop and I've set it to 1080 to test the difference. When I am 3D modelling the jaggies at 1080 are very distracting, I much prefer 4K when 3D modelling.

When browsing the web or typing or even gaming I prefer 1080 for various reasons.

        • @FabMan:

Wouldn't it be better for you to 3D model on a 27" UHD while using your mouse?

        • +1

          @CVonC:

I use a mouse but I don't have a monitor any more or the space to use it. Lost my office to kids… Damn them.

I find it works well on my setup, I don't have any problems and games play really well. Not at 4K obviously.

        • Scaling is a nightmare but I wish the FHD display had the ~90% Adobe colour gamut and not 64%

    • At the start of the year, people were complaining about ghosting and poor response times on the FHD screens. Might've been resolved by now though.

    • I think that is better value, but 4K isn't pointless.

    • Maybe it's pointless if you're completely blind, but to most of us FHD at that size looks like garbage.

  • Can u buy extra warranty on refurbished dells?

    • +1

Yep, after you buy, there is a window to buy additional warranty (a month I think). I've done it before. Just speak to the agent and they'll walk you through it.

  • Pascal versions coming out I believe so they are trying to clear the old refurb stock. I have noticed that sale price has come down to around $2550 new (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/280748) when they were 3000-3200 the refurbs used to be $2499 so bringing it down to $1899 makes sense when there are sales of brand new stock for around the old refurb price. Good deal for those who don't mind sacrificing battery life with 4k screen or don't care too much about gaming (unless you have some alienware rig you want to hook it up to - GTX 960M won't handle most new releases at high settings and you need at least 980 on the old gen for VR).

  • Why are 15 of them refurbished?

  • Are the Xps 13s good value?

    • +2

Excellent value, I wish I was in the position to get one.

      • XPS 13 or this 14" ThinkPad for $959? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/282085
Any informed opinions as to which would be better please?

        • +1

Depends on the usage. ThinkPad has dedicated video and more RAM if you're using programs that are more intensive. XPS is 1.2kg vs 1.9kg, smaller dimensions and with at least twice the battery life. XPS 13 for me (travel & general browsing) but I have a desktop for graphics.

        • @nse: Thank you nse.

        • Dammit I just convinced myself to buy one if there's any left, haha

      • Prices are quite similar to when Dell have 20% off though right?
I remember prices for new units being about this cheap when eBay had their 20% off sale.

        • Best previous pricing I could see is around $1230 (& $1299 for 256gb model) vs $1029 for the few currently available

  • +1

    Unaffordable :(

  • Add a couple of hundred, and you should be able to bag a refurb Alienware in the same website.

I've seen a few with GTX 1060 going for around 2k.

  • Anyone know if the XPS laptops still exhibit coil whine?

  • Great price for the specs. It's just now an XPS 13 though. This is so much bigger and heavier. Most people are moving away from laptops like this.

  • +4

I have this laptop and got so sick of the scaling issues in windows with the 4K screen I ended up just changing the resolution back to 1920x1080. There is also a known issue with screen flicker with the latest versions of graphics drivers that dell has not solved.

I should saved saved a few hundred dollars and just got the regular non touch screen…

    • But 1920x1080 looks a bit fuzzy… I've gone into JB-HiFi to see them in real life do a quick comparison as they had both of them on display.

      1920 x 1080 on a native 4K screen does not look good.

      4k on a 4k screen looks great.
1920x1080 on a native 1920x1080 screen looks good.

I personally think we aren't ready for 4K yet - our hardware/battery technology has a bit to improve. Programs need to support it otherwise we get dodgy scaling issues too…

      • +1

Yeh I don't blame Dell for the 4k scaling issues in Windows 10, I should have done more research. The programs I use for work like SAP GUI would not scale correctly and were unusable. I've just learned to live with the slight fuzzy text.

Have a look how many XPS 4k flicker threads there are on reddit - https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/search?q=XPS+flicker&restrict_…

        • Yeah i'm using one now with the flicker issue, and the scaling is a pain. Also there are no HD/Thunderbolt docks for these, removed from sale with issues and still not replaced yet.

        • +1

@Infraction: Do you use the 960m drivers from the dell site (not updated since Nov last year) or just get the latest from the Nvidia site?

          http://www.dell.com/support/home/AU/en/04/product-support/se…

        • Same, should have researched it better but Dell is a little to blame for making it available in the first place when they would know how bad the scaling is.

Ofc eventually it might get sorted out but the fact that it scales up everything on 4K by default makes it less useful anyway. You can purchase a FHD and reduce scale if you need/want more desktop space.

I would recommend everyone get the FHD. I should have done the same… :(

Btw, using older intel video drivers 4331 and nvidia drivers from dell site and are flicker free. Also unistalled dell color app too which I think has a big part in the issue for some of us…

  • +2

Really quick mention here: I have one of these (previous refurbish post) and these have screen flickering issue (mostly on battery) when the screen isn't at full brightness. Reports have indicated that you can downgrade the Bios to a lower version which removes the flicker but at the expense of reliable Thunderbolt 3 (some people have also reported that downgrading the intel video drivers helped - I haven't confirmed that - No fix forthcoming from Dell yet afaik).

    See Thread Here: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3519/t/…

  • ~ Six year old Dell Studio XPS 16 still going strong! :)

  • +2

I actually want xps13 with 7th i7 CPU and fhd screen which hasn't been listed :( qhd on 13inch's screen and 4k on 15inch's are pointless

    • What about this one? DFO-3909133XL - $1629.

      • that one comes with i5 cpu

    • +2

6th Gen i7 CPU is better than 7th i7 gen CPU on the XPS 13

This is because the graphics that comes with the 7th gen i7 = HD620.

The graphics with the 6th gen i7 = Intel iris 540

      • +1

7th gen in the XPS13 atm is only dual core. that might be a factor to consider as well…

        • +1

Yeah the XPS 13's use dual core i7's where the XPS 15 uses a proper Quad core i7. (i7 HQ)

  • Be careful with Dell refurbs, I bought a batch a few years back and 2/3 died prematurely with mobo issues.
I suspect if a customer returns a unit with a non descript fault (E.g. dead, does not power on etc) and when they get it back they can not find the fault they just repack it and sell it as a refurb.
    Get the warranty at least.

    • +1

FYI I got my previous Alienware from them, and cannot fault their next day service. Parts sent same day, and tech arrives next day to fix on the spot. Usually get a bunch of parts depending on fault and just figure it out once they're on site. I might add this was actually just outside the one year of on site warranty as well!

      • Agree, Dell have been flawless in their support for me so far. They serviced my laptop bought overseas no questions asked.

      • Yes Dell warranty is great but refurb with minimal warranty can be not so great.

  • +2

Just be aware the 1060 series GPUs are becoming more prevalent now in the big brands and prices are dropping drastically. That's what sets the price of these laptops. Also be aware the mobile 960 v 1060 versions are absurdly different. The 1060 out performs hands down, and is also able to do VR well. It has far more memory, more bandwidth, higher clock speeds, higher memory, more shading units, etc etc etc. In games like BF4 it's 2-3 times faster than the 960.

The battery drain is also less with the 1060, and cooler to boot. This latest gen of cards are a huge improvement whereas the 960 mobile series was basically just a better binned 860 mobile series.

  • +1

    Thanks, just got one,:)
however can't have cashrewards since can't paid though the website.

  • +1

These are a kick in the butt performance-wise. Thanks for sharing OP.

  • Great device, great price!
    16GB RAM is insane :)
I had the XPS 13 with 8GB for 3 years now and never looked back.

  • These things have great performance and are very nice to use however as someone who works for an organisation with 200+ of these, I can confirm that there is a reason that there is such a large number of these refurbished units to be listed all at once.

  • +1

I bought one of these and ended up returning it because:
    * Mine came with a 1.5 x 0.5 cm scratch on the aluminium lid.
    * The screen had a pinkish hue on the right hand side (4k).
    * Soft-touch carbon fiber palm area is very susceptible to picking up dirt and skin oils.
    * It's a powerful machine but uncomfortably warm under load in Australian Summer.
    * Battery life was fairly average - definitely nothing to write home about (though not a reason to return since I knew it was going to be average)

YMMV - definitely great given the significant discount off RRP.

  • Bought this model on ebay with 10% off deal a month or so ago for photo/video editing on location. Calibrated the screen with an i1 Photo spectrometer for colour accuracy. I like the balance of power and weight/portability. Best overall laptop I've used to date though I'd never pay the RRP these things have but at the refurbished price its a good choice for multimedia/photo/video work. For gaming though probably would underpowered.

  • +1

Not sure if anyone will read this but don't have much time and there's a bunch available again, xps 12.2,xps 13 & xps 15.

  • They pop up on the Dell outlet all the time. Makes me wonder why so many have been refurbished?? Still don't think I can justify $1899 for it, thought the price would have come down by now given the age of this laptop.
