  • If you're looking for an internal storage drive, this looks pretty good.

But, if you're going to stick it in an enclosure you might find it's about the same cost to buy a 1TB external from somewhere like Officeworks.

    • Eh? they have 1TB external drives for a similar price? i looked at their website and didn't see anything anywhere near that price. Got a link?

      • They have 1TB external drives for a similar price to this + an enclosure.

    • Cheapest 1TB ext storage is currently around $90 - $95

      • +1

        Cheapest 3.5" SATA enclosure is between $20 and $30 depending on where you are. $63 + $7ish delivery + $25 enclosure = $95.

        • Sorry, I get what you mean now. I agree with your maths, sir

    • Enclosures from OW and the like are almost always USB, which is too slow for transferring 1TB of data.

  • +7

    Hmm 63+6.67= $70 only $11 dollars off =(
I want the samsung deal again because that was like $40 off

    • Yeah I agree, Samsung deal was so sweet, and it perform much faster than WD or Seagate

      • Yeah I am still wounded from that fiasco! But I'll get over!

  • +1

    ordered one!!!

  • +5

    1TB is TOOOOOOO SMALL!

    • So true. Make it a WD20EARS or don't bother at all :-p

  • intel, sammy, seagate, wd.. what next? hitachi? ibm?

    • best performance to worst perhaps?

  • Would like to see some laptop hard drives next time

  • damn, $63 would have been awesome! but the $70 price inc shipping put me off.

  • +3

Be careful with these drives, they have a 4K sector size. They are not recommended for use in RAID or in a NAS…. for more info Google is your friend !!!!

    • yes this is true. here is the link.

    • Thanks!

    • Thx for info I am going to stay away from these type of HDD's now, which is mainly WD lol

      • It will eventually be all manufacturers. If you're using it in a desktop it works fine with Vista or 7, with Linux it's a simple matter to align it properly when you partition it and with XP you just need to run a simple tool.

If you're sticking it in an array then you probably want better performance than this anyway.

    • Thank you for that, just looked up information about these.
Was considering putting it into my thecus nas.

Thumps up from me, but yea im in the catergory 2TB is the smallest i'll go these days

    • In that case its the only size you can go.. Don't think 3TB are anywhere really to be seen yet (retail wise)

  • Hope they send these out faster than the $49 ones. I'm still waiting 2 weeks later

    • I got mine more than a week ago? I purchased mine in the later hours of the deal as well.

    • If you paid by Paypal, is your paypal account verified? lol
I'm getting my paypal verified now while my order is still pending.

  • Interesting that the 24" LCD gets free shipping but not this. Still a good price though.

  • +1

    Sold out =(

    • keep checking during the day they are known to add stock in later on

  • With hard drives being this cheap, many users should consider buying two and using RAID 1 (mirrored hard drives). Should one drive fail the data is retained on the other. Hard drive failures are not common, but I've seen Seagate, WD, Samsung and Toshiba drives suddenly die over the years, usually with no warning from SMART.

Most people are reluctant to keep a regular backup regime, so RAID 1 is the next best thing.

    • Problem is most cheap drives do not like RAID, WD etc even specifically say it wont work, without some workarounds.

      • WD sell a RAID Edition drive specifically for 24/7 use, but I haven't had a problem with RAIDed cheap WD and Seagate drives in the past. I am using the cheapest 500Gb Seagate drives in RAID 1 at the moment without issues.

Where cheap drives can run into problems is recalibration, where the drive goes offline for a short while and the RAID controller can think the drive has dropped out. I have yet to see this in my systems however.

Id go for Samsung F3's if you really want raid.

          • @DarkLotus: For enterprise use (which is what WD are referring to in the link) I would definately use the highest grade drives with hardware RAID. For home use however I really think the cheap editions of WD, Seagate, Samsung et al drives are fine.

If any of my drives take up to 2 minutes (!!!) to try and recover from an error, I definately want them out of my system and back to the manufacturer. Any drive that starts to shuffle data around for even a few seconds in an attempt to recover from errors is not going to last much longer (speaking from personal experience). I monitor data reallocation events through SMART and sure enough, any drive that starts to shuffle experiences data loss soon afterwards.

  • I just got one, seems like there is more stock.

    • If you are using linux, you need to make sure that the partition starts at a location divisible by 8.

Fdisk now by default starts at 1MB (which is divisible by 8), its only really gparted and some other tools that default with non 8-divisible partition starts.

  • I have had no luck again…

It bounced me out the first time from the pay pal window.
then go back and they have sold out…

Is it because I use Fire Fox….

Also are you going to have stock that did not sell relisted at a later time today like last time…

  • just got 1 for me 2 minutes ago..

  • Looks available, but is it always only 1 per user on pricesengine?

  • +3

I like how they took the forums suggestion and implemented a timer during the PayPal confirmation screen. Awesome service on their part!

  • Hey I ordered the i5 CPU on July 1st but still haven't received it yet. I live in Sydney and the item I ordered from UK one day before my order with priceengine has already arrived. I'm so disappointed with pricesengine.

    • Can you email to our customer service with your order ID. It's may be it's about your paypal payer status.

You have to verify your paypal account otherwise we can not process your order.

Please email to us i i will ask our customer service to follow up for you.

      sorry about the late.

      • Hello minniewu, I also ordered the i5 CPU but have not received it yet. I have emailed your customer service twice now but have not received any reply yet.

  • Just got one! Was looking for cheap hard drives to start porting my data from DVD over to a HDD.

Anyway is it really neccessary to do a paypal verification?

And regarding the 4K Sectors… Do you mean the platters have 4K Sectors, or you have to format it as a 4K sector???

  • +1

Great deal, but CARE NEEDED with XP or earlier Windows systems.
Following on from the comments earlier, there are lots of comments on the 'net about abysmal performance. If you install it out of the package with XP you will get poor performance due to XP not handling the 4K sector size correctly. Its easy to resolve and there is a sticker on the package advising what to do.

I have one of these on Windows 7 and its great.

  • what are you guys on about? Will this HDD work with windows XP or not? Should i get a refund?

    • +1

No need for a refund. Just don't install it without preparing it first. It's a small workaround as the earlier OS was not designed for this newer technology. Do a search on the 'net and you will find many explanations. From the WD site - either insert a jumper or download and run their WD Align software. Most recommendations are to use the software solution.

      http://wdc.com/en/products/advancedformat/

Or try here for an independent explanation - a bit technical.

      http://forums.vr-zone.com/hardware-arena/526152-wd-caviar-gr…

On Windows 7 I find the performance fine, and I can't hear it running.

      • If you run the WD Align software once, when you format/partition it. Will you have to rerun it again in the future if you reformat again???

Also if i've run the WD Align software, it'll be backwards compatible with Windows 7 right???

        Thanks for your help!

        • From the Western Digital link above …..

"Does the WD Align utility have to be run again if a drive is reformatted?
No, users will only need to run WD Align one time after initially installing Windows XP. Once Windows XP has been aligned, it will stay aligned even if the drive is reformatted or many files are added or removed."

As I didn't use XP I didn't check it out much, but it looks like you can fix an existing install.

"….. WD Align utility should take about 20 minutes to complete on freshly installed drive images with no data files …."

I assume that it then will be fine for Windows 7 as well.

  • Seems like there is more stock now. But I am holding out for a 1.5 or 2TB drive though.
