    Newer PS3s no longer have PS2 emulation, and if there's a market for a cheap PS2 console then why not?

  I still have a heap of PS2 games that I haven't played/finished: ICO, Persona 4, MGS3 to name a few.

  good thing is that you can get it modified for around $50, and there will be thousands of free games to play.

  Good for a backup but you're not gonna be able to get good games anymore from the gaming stores…If you can, go pick up FF12, MGS3, Valkyrie Profile 2, and Shadow of The Collossus. Even with the ps2's huge library, they were the only ones that i really liked.

  They certainly do still sell these. And yes, if you've got a big library of titles then its still a fantastic machine. I for one still have heaps of games for it. [then of course, I also eventually learned about backups so I got even more after that] Just last month, I finished Ratchet and Clank again while my little boy was watching. He loves it. Most of the titles I have at home for the PS3 aren't exactly kid friendly. :)
