Acer Aspire 4315-100508CI Notebook $499 After Cashback from The Good Guys

100

This is from my local The Good Guys but I think it might be available in other locations as well. Well, $499 for a base model 14.1" notebook (after cashback) — it is now in the territory of cheap lappies like the ASUS Eee PC (which is $489 at The Good Guys).

What they did is figuring out Windows is too expensive and excessive at this price point so they have replaced it with the open source equivalent — Linux. With all these Linux on cheap computers, I wonder whether it will take off on desktops (as oppose to servers) this year.

Specs:

  • CPU: Intel Celeron 1.86GHz processor
  • RAM: 512MB
  • HDD: 80GB
  • LCD: 14.1" WXGA
  • Optical: CDRW/DVD Combo
  • OS: Linux

  • Interesting, It lists linux as the operating system

    • I guess by not paying the Microsoft tax they can push down the price further…

  • I'll 1+ it if there are Windows XP drivers for this model. I presume there are but I don't presume they'll necessarily be easy to find.

    • Go to AcerSupport page, and search for Notebook Aspire 4315, and then you can see all the downloadable drivers there.

      Can I have my +1 now :)

      • There you go :)

  • It's neat - we bought one.
Positives - runs (surprisingly) fast, plays DVDs, wmv, &c, OpenGL 3D games and demos. Very good price!
Negatives - our dealer had a bad batch - they work well, but won't reboot, also TV out seems dead. Acer are now involved in finding a fix.

The reboot glitch is not really a problem, just power off, power on, and it works, but we do need TV out for EPG.

    • Are you using Linux?

      • Yes, we run Linux. Pre-installed Ubuntu 7.10 was a big positive.
We dual-boot XP and Linux on other machines, find that once drivers are sorted out for graphics, WiFi, etc, Linux works best for us and needs 90% less maintenance - no Norton $oftware needed etc. A year ago that wasn't quite true for us, but Linux is improving daily and we have more experience now.
Getting a laptop with all the Linux drivers running out-of-the-box made life so easy.
