Free Energy Saving Standby Powerboard - Greater Brisbane Residents

1130

EzyGreen website launched today for residents of the Greater Brisbane area of QLD.
For both renters & owners of properties, available free of charge is a Energy Saving Standby Powerboard (https://ezygreen.com.au/WhatsOnOffer/FreeEnergysavingPowerbo…)

This is how the Standby Powerboard functions to save power:
"It works by linking multiple appliances to one master appliance e.g. your TV. When the power to your nominated master appliance is switched to standby mode, the power to the other ‘linked’ appliances (such as home entertainment devices) is completely switched off automatically. This eliminates standby power as though each device had been turned off at the wall. When the main device is turned back on, power is restored to the ‘linked’ appliances. The user won’t see anything different."

Other incentives (ie. Solar water/power) are available for owners of properties, but is beyond the scope of this bargain listing. Use the postcode search onsite to display what options are available to you.

Enjoy.

  • Awesome, thanks Devz!

  • That's a really good deal. Shame it's just for QLD :(

    • +3

      Where else but Queensland? ;)

  • +4

Keep in mind that some older Plasmas draw too much power (Up to about 30w) in standby so if the TV is your master device the power board will never think you have turned the TV off so never turn off your other appliances

    • -1

I think it could tell if you're drawing 100w vs 30w…

      • +5

The power boards work by turning everything off when the current draw on the master socket drops below a certain amount (typically less than 10 watts)

If your TV draws more than this amount when it is in standby the power board will never turn off the other outlets.
It does not work by looking for a significant power drop on the master socket. For the board to turn everything off the power draw on the master socket must fall below a pre determined power draw.

        • i'm interested in knowing just which plasmas draw up to 30w on standby… even yr2000 models shouldn't be that bad. 30W is pretty obviously warm to the touch.

          • @kimmik: I cant find much now as google brings up too many pages with general information about standby power and how evil it is.

When i was looking at these boards several years ago it was stated on some product pages that they wouldn't work with appliances that drew large amounts of power when in standby and i did google it and was able to find several models with ridiculously high power consumption.

  • Is the powerboard actually worth $180 tho, as most of the green ones at bunnings are only 50-60 max. Still free is a great deal. Already signed up here :)

    • +1

Technically nothing is sold for what its worth, remember profit. If it states a larger price, more people are tempted when its given away as free, manipulation marketing.

At a guess id say its this product: http://www.crestonline.biz/info/earthsmart
      TechBuy listing (RRP: $180): http://www.techbuy.com.au/product.asp?prodId=125433&catId=UP…

    • +1

Perhaps not worth the stated RRP, but certainly worth it to save $$$ on the electricity bills! As it's a free board, you're already ahead!

    • Basically the only time anything is ever sold at RRP is right when it's released, and even then…

      Still, free definitely beats $50!

  • Signed up, thx devz

  • awesome thx.

  • Didn't even know these boards existed! I'm currently using a remote to switch off my entertainment appliances at the socket, but this would be even handier!

Wish it was avail in NSW as well!

    • +3

As if you needed another reason to move to QLD!

      • +1

They need more of these deals back down south so the many mexicians stop crossing the border lol

    • I have also been using a couple of the remote adapters at the socket as these cost about $5-$10 each and I just plug a standard powerboard into the adapter compared to $50+ for these powerboards, but I'm happy to take one of these today and see the difference. Thanks for the alert devz

  • great deal

  • +1

    Shame, not in gold coast

    • Thanks for letting us know Strand0410 - Updated title now that i've found some region limits for the free powerboard.

    • Should state "Greater Brisbane" as I'm about an hour out of Brissie, definitely in SE Qld, and doesnt work for me.

    • +1

Agreed - think its best to say "Brisbane City Council" area given that this is a BCC initiative.

(I'm renting in Bris, got a powerboard. I own a flat on the Coast, and is not available there).

  • I'm not sure of the scope of this deal … I'm in SE Qld and I wasn't 'eligible'. By messing around with the information I could sign up but it involved some rep coming out and doing me a quote for solar hot water. Don't think it's worth a power board, even if I was eligible.

"For both renters & owners of properties, available free of charge is a Energy Saving Standby Powerboard" doesn't appear to be true at all

    • +1

Sorry for the mislead Wampus, had to drill into the powerboard information page to find 'greater brisbane' reference.

      • +1

        no worries

  • What are they asking us to sign up for?
As i understand is it changing your energy retailer to EzyGreen?
This is what makes me think that is the case

"The equivalent of 20% of your household’s electricity will be sourced through GreenPower accredited sources at no extra cost, as provided by PowerDirect, a fully owned subsidiary of AGL"

  • -1

    it worked with postcode 4155

i wonder if you put your address in eg nsw with a qld postcode will they send one to you…

    eg

    bob smith
    1 smith st
    sydney town nsw 2155

    4155, CHANDLER, QLD

    • no harm in trying ;)

    • +2

4155 isnt a NSW postcode. This is a Brisbane City government rebate scheme.

  • -2

seems to me that you are signing up to change your electricity provider (with out them actually saying). Is that worth a power board?

    • +1

You are not signing up to change providers, just giving them permission to pass on your details to AGL to contact you so they can put the hard sell on you directly. It's a free trip to their telemarketers list or worse - a suprise home visit by the door knockers!

    • +4

Try unticking that checkbox, suddenly now it has nothing to do with electricity providers.

      • +3

Thats exactly what I did, unchecked the AGL box (which was sneakily checked for me) and only left the free powerboard box checked.

        • +1

AGL is probably funding some of these freebies/incentives. Bargain was listed purely to obtain powerboard, nothing else.

Simply put, ENERGEX supplies SE QLD & Ergon Energy supplies Regional QLD.

The retailers, Origin, AGL and possibly all other companies, simply provide pricing competition & collect payments from small scale customers. Competition between these companies as to whoever has the most customers, translates to who makes the most profit.

          • +1

@devz: The AGL saving for green power is also a bargain too. 20% green for no extra spend. No other provider is offering that.

            • +1

@asa79: I got that with Origin when i signed up with them (20% greenpower at no extra cost)

  • +2

Not valid for the Gold Coast unfortunately

    • argh..yes. oxenford.
Edit: Dam ur right! Since when isn't GC part of south east Qld?

    • -1

      yea…agreed

  • Works at Goodna, postcode 4300

    • +1

I ordered one for my Uncle who lives in Goodna. He won't say no to a freebee except that time I ordered him a StayFree Ultra Thin!! Also works in Bundamba 4304.

  • Got one thanks, only checked free, hope don't get any random calls

  • Thanks devs. got one. much appeciate. woot woot

  • hehe 69 positive votes ;)

  • thanks!

  • For some reason the email address I entered is already used.

Seems that pressing the Next and then Previous button prevents submitting the same details.

  • Works for me :)

  • Was just about to buy something similar from Jaycar (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=MS6146&CATID=12&…) so this is perfect! The powerboard is a better option and you can't beat free. :)

    • +1

I wonder how much power some of those power saving devices draw.
I know my TV draws 0.3watts in standby, i dont know about the other devices but they are likely not too far off.
If the jaycar device drew more than a few watts it would probably be more than the average setup consumes in standby

      • +1

Devices described to use very little standby power & NOT recommended to serve as Master devices:
        - VCRs, DVD players, Set-top boxes, Pay TV and Stereos
Suggested devices to be used as Master devices:
        - TV, HD Recorder, Amplifier, PC and Home theatre AV systems.

Whilst standby doesnt use much power at all, this powerboard just steps up the commonsense level a bit.
Theres not often a reason to having consoles, dvd player, media player, paytv all consuming ANY power at all if the TV isnt on.

  • It will be intersting to see how much I save.

  • How do I actually manage to get one of these? Obviously I am not very computer literate. Thankyou.

    • +1

Click the image above, next to the description, enter your postcode, click 'Get Started' see if the free powerboard is listed for you, if so, continue to give details.

Dont forget to vote positive if you manage to get one. Good luck.

  • Yay I got one… I paid $15 for a non-saving powerboard a while ago. :/

  • +3

I don't care about the power saving abilities, a free 8 socket powerboard is good enough!

  • Mine arrived today. works well, Excellent freebie.

  • got mine today. it is fantastic!!!!! has 2 slots for always on power (great cos i was worrying about my clock) and has the large peripheral spaces for chunky plugs/transformers.

really pleased to get this, and im sure it will actually help reduce standby usage. well done to the government on doing something right for once. should give 2 out to every household in australia rekon.

  • Mine arrived today… and something that stood out to me is the '$unlimited connected equipment warranty' they offer against items broken by power surges while attached to it. I could see people scamming this like crazy.

    • Claims for connected equipment warranty are investigated by experienced electrical engineers, doubt this will be used to scam anybody. Instead respect being given the free powerboard AND the connected equipment warranty, so that if the worst case happens, you do have some options.

  • yup great initiative by the state gov. Two thumbs up!!

  • Also thanks for posting this devz

  • Got mine today, quality product, makes it even better that it's free!

The product is Earth Smart v2.

  • Mine arrived just then! Thanks QLD gov and devz

  • Just got mine today. Thanks devz.

  • Got mine! Best freebie on OzBargain so far.
