  • Ubiquiti G3 5pack + NVR is slightly cheaper, albeit with with less installed storage.

    • Link? How do the cameras compare?

      • The ubiquiti cameras and software were rather poor when I looked at them 3 years ago. Maybe they've improved a lot since then.

Can't you just import these cameras for about $100-$150 each?

    • Importing seems to be only about 10-15% cheaper. And it would have to be ordered separately to avoid GST I guess. The warranty and not having to wait weeks to get it is probably worth the 10-15%.

      Yes

      Better buying this with a 4TB purple HDD for $652 - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/UK-Hikvision-DS-7608NI-K2-8P-8-Ch…

      And 4 of these for $400 - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Hikvision-DS-2CD3345-I-4MP-FHD-PO…

Saved over $400 in the process…..or wait for the next 20% off Ebay sale (which must be due any day now) and save even more

Also no need to pay more for warranty - Hikvision cameras are pretty reliable. Also postage can be very quick if you opt to pay for expedited shipping

      • Firmware can't be updated on the cameras.
Might not matter to most people.

        • There's no need to update firmware

        • @tight-ass: Why is that?

        • @shane_au: because they got it right the first time, no bugs or feature enhancements required :)

        • yep, and can only use local china market recording devices. Firmware updates will brick the cameras.

        • @cryptos: I just updated my hikvision's to firmware 5.4.3 that allows hik cloud platform access.
The app is fantastic…And fast. Can record, take photos and get notifications.

        • @cryptos:

          Exactly

        • @shane_au: was that on an IP camera or the DVR?

        • @cryptos: Hi. I updated the camera firmware.
Not using the DVR. I have microserver with Blue Iris for recording.

        • @shane_au:
so the cameras where the firmware is 5.3.3 which cannot be updated won't get this feature?

        • @roh008: Dunno. Mine came with a much earlier version.
          Cannot remember the exact version.

        • @tight-ass:

Until Google enforce SSL/TLS and the firmware you are stuck on doesn't work for email notifications without a fair bit of stuffing around.

Great camera's but it's such a shame they enforce chinese/english firmwares on different models.

      • is there a cheaper model? say around 5-600 bucks?

without the fancy rotate (PTZ?) feature

i heard the long/tube style ones are more than sufficient?

      • 3345

the 2342 has true wdr and a metal base, while the 3345 has a plastic base and digital wdr.

does the former justify the extra cost? some users think so.

to be honest the price is too high but if one go through ebay or Aliexpress and purchase all the devices seperately will come to odd $1000

  • Agreed. These guys are great.

  • would suggest not going through alibaba just to save some money. gotten the nvr and 7 of the cameras and the nvr failed in less than 7 months. obviously because its a China based seller in Beijing, however reputable they may sound, once the unit starts to act up, its very difficult to pursue warranty support. in my case, they refuse to response to my alibaba chat or email.

local hikvision wouldnt entertain, saying i need to go back to where i purchase them overseas. learnt my lesson and purchased a local nvr unit.

things like security, u pay to get a peace of mind. key learning to purchase local for important stuff that i dont want to spend time to muck around changing parts and trouble-shooting.

do shop around though, i think there are cheaper ones out there.

  • I've bought this whole system overseas for 600 without issue

    I'd rather save my money

  • I have been happy with Hikvision 5x 3 Mpixel camera set for a while, until I wanted to expand 2 more 4 Mpixel camera…

My NVR wouldn't accept the new Hikvision cameras. Technician told me to upgrade the NVR but not possible due to poor product support (including facebook site)

I think buying local paying 10% more well worth for the system so you can demand future support unlike Chinese firms wouldn't care.

I don't know why upgrade the camera… It is important what lenses you have, and hardware. I am not sure upgrading camera will make much difference in quality.

I have a different brand PTZ camera but Hikvision NVR won't accept other cameras despite Ebay sales person said it was suitable.

Sound is expensive but Hikvision is a good quality camera if you can get the right support

I've tried using generic Chinese cameras on a locally sourced hikvision nvr. We found that if we used the Poe ports directly on the back of the nvr the camera would work for a few seconds then the nvr would crash, the solution we came up with was to use a seperate Poe switch connected to the same network as the nvr then manually add the cameras ip's to the nvr, even tho the distributor (CSD) said this would never work.
The ptz functions may not work for you if the control protocol used is different between the nvr and ptz camera.
Note that many ip based ptz's still require a seperate power supply for camera movement.

      • Security (CCTV) camera business is like computer business. It is important to deal with specialist people who really knows the cameras, not only the one they promote or sell.
I made a mistake seeking cheaper options (Ebay, Alibaba) and trying to make working all.
        Many thanks

  • Off topic here… I tried to install one DIY but I am struggle to find the power/ac adapter that fits the camera and long enough to go over the roof for a spare power socket. Any helps would be appreciated!

    • Is it a poe camera? If so just buy a cheap 4 port poe switch and you can get power from the ethernet cables.
