  • Any good?

    • +56

      For the price, alarmingly good.

    • +6

Got one from last deal, seems solid, the brightness of the display can be adjusted, and the alarm functionality is easy to use with minimal button presses. I hate when simple devices like alarm clocks have heaps of features added to them, which make the base functionality harder to use. This is not the case here.

      • Thanks for the review :)

      • +2

@ Gmetal Agreed. We picked one of these up from Dick Smith around 3 or 4 years ago while on holiday in Cairns. Got it through an OzB linked sale back then too, (we had forgotten to pack our own trusty alarm clock). Love the colour of the light day or night, it has three lighting settings, but the yellow/ orange light is easy on the eye at night (A lot better than green IMHO). The alarm sound itself is easy on the ear (Doesn't wake us up to church bells going off), the sound of the radio in FM or AM is really bad, but it is just for waking you up or checking the time. It is very easy to accidentally set it to radio alarm instead of standard alarm.
Of note though, our unit (and we have a brand new button cell battery in it, so it is not a battery issue) does lose about a minute every two weeks. Only raise that as our other clocks around the home need checking or changing probably once a year. I change the time on this one every month or so (Can't be late for work :-) ).

For the last decade I've been using my mobile phone as an alarm clock.

Do people still use clock radios these days? I guess if you are married it might be different

    • +6

I still use mobile, which is bad as I'm tempted to waste time just before sleeping checking shit sometimes.

      • +1

Yeah I try to resist the temptation to browse shit when I should be sleeping…darn it :)

      • +10

I tend to use the toilet to check my shit.

        • +3

I tend to check my sh!t before I flush it.

        • @mikokik5: always good to check your stool and see if the corn has gone through.

      • +2

Yeah, and then get the shits as there aren't any bargains going on OzB

        • +2

          Never ends this shit.

    • Hard to listen to the radio on for while in bed before sleep with a phone I guess, with good reception and no headphones, and have it turn itself off. Not that I've ever tried.

      • So this one can turn the radio off after 15 / 30 / minutes etc?

        • +1

          "Sleep timer: 15 min./30 min./60 min./90 min."

    • +3

It's good that this alarm clock has a backup battery.

Traditional alarm clocks are useless when the power cuts when you're sleeping and you've got a flight to catch…

      • Don't want to be Home Alone

      • The battery just holds the time, it does not run the clock. So if the power is off when it should alarm, it will not go off.

  • +1

As others have mentioned in reviews online, the volume control dial can be a little difficult to operate as it is almost flush with the surface. Otherwise this is a terrific radio - have just purchased a second one.

    • Got one from previous deal last year, still bnib in my cupboard.

      • +8

BNIB = "Brand New In Box"

    • Can you turn the lcd off or at least dim it? I find some of these clocks can light up the room?

      • +4

No and yes, there are three brightness levels.

        • Is the lowest setting fairly dim?

        • +2

@flashi007: I suppose so? If they have done it logically, I guess it would be 33% of the brightest setting? I am not sure how to provide an example that would help without you actually seeing it…maybe as bright as a smartphone/tablet on 100% brightness looks on a fairly sunny day (which is not that bright)??? Put it this way, I prefer to have it on the lowest setting as the other two especially 100% is quite bright…lowest setting doesn't bother me at night. It's more the constant dull buzzing that is annoying…but I'm getting deaf now, so don't really hear it these days.

  • +4

Got one from Dick Smith (!) and it's ace. Even has a little button for DST so it just goes back/forward one hour as required.

      • +17

        it appears they do

      • -1

        Kiss my ace

      • The tribe has spoken

      • Apologies. Let me reword my previous statement.

"Got one from Dick Smith and it's fully filth".

        • +2

          You mean "fully sick", bro?

  • Seems to have $9 delivery cost. Any special discount code?

    • +2

Try logging in or creating an account for free shipping.

  • How dim does the display go?

    • +3

Noticeably dimmer than other clock radios.

      • Is there a dimmer? I found this orange LED to be brighter than the old red alarm clock radios

        • +1

Hit the snooze button - there are three brightness levels.

  • Website banner says signup for free shipping. Just signed up as they say free shipping for the first 3 orders

  • Looking for a good cheap DAB alarm clock. The bush ones have bad reviews

    • Yeah I'm not a fan of Bush.

      • +4

        Depends on which bush.

      • -1

Having trouble finding it? Like a good Brazilian?

      • -1

Yeah.. Bushes need a good trim..

    • Yep, I went with one of the cheaper Bush DAB radios and the contrast of the screen is horrendous. Even on the lowest brightness in full darkness, it lights up the surroundings and shows even the roof.

  • +2

This is not a digital (DAB) radio.

Also, it has no presets. It uses an analog dial to tune a radio station.

    • +1

Did you mean that this is not the DAB I was looking for ?

      • +3

Your joke is so bad it's good.

        • +2

          So BAD it's backwards!

    • I thought it was too good to be true

What the hell, it states "Digital radio presets". And it's not even digital tuning, so what can this be taken to mean…

I have a TDK ipod dock radio which I bought cheaply as it is for an older model ipod (don't use ipods anyway).
I like it because it has powerful speakers, which I need to wake me up. But the buttons go haywire frequently.

Does this Sony have a powerful speaker?

      • Not powerful, and sounds really bad for radio listening. But a great clock with alarm for sure (The colour of the LED for time is very easy on the eye too)

  • The product is called "Single Alarm Clock Radio" but description from the website says dual alarm?

But more importantly, they forgot to mention Elegant AM/FM Clock radio with mirror-finished display and retro rotation dial analog tuning.

    • Because the way 98% of radio listeners tune their analogue radios is retro obviously.

  • Thanks OP. Perfect timing! My current AM/FM Clock radio has just started to play up.

  • +3

My clock radio is 25 years old. It basically looks and functions exactly like this one :p

  • Saw this in Coles on sale for $18 yesterday. Not sure if it was my store only though… (Engadine)

  • +4

I recently got his clock. It has an annoying buzzing noise. Not recommended next to bed side.

Eventhough it's Sony I think its rather poor quality

For this reason I'm placing this one work desk no where near bed time

    • +1

Yes, I get that too. Mine randomly loses the station, even though I haven't touched the frequency dial??? Just to make sure I put tape over the dial and sometimes it still happens???

      • Wow that's insane. I guess I will use it as a dumb clock then in the kitchen lol. Still better than average Ikea crap

    • @neonlight, agree with this too. I have tinitus so I do not notice anything less noisy that a 747 going over, but my wife says our unit has a buzz if you turn up the volume control for radio when it is set to clock only. But you can turn that volume control down, and it does not change the volume of the alarm noise, just the radio noise. So it is coming from the speaker, not not the display.

  • +2

Remember 2.4% cash rewards……..hey……50 cents is 50 cents.

  • -3

That Sony radio/clock was on clearance for around $12 at Woolworths a few months ago. I had one in my hands but decided not to buy it when I figured out, it does not have 24hr clock. 24hr mode is very important for alarm, easy mistake can be made with AM/PM.

  • -1

Got two of these for around $8 each delivered back when they had those $25 vouchers for completing that online survey. Quality alarm clocks for the price.

    • -1

Never received those what so called vouchers. I hate Sony for that reason alone. Plenty of people filled in survey got nothing absolutely disgusting

  • Costco has the dual alarm model for only $8 more. Good to have a 'backup alarm' if you sleep through the first one like me.

    • You can snooze for up to an hour on this one and the alarm goes for an hour before turning off. You would sleep through that?! I wish I could sometimes!

      • On the other side it has sleep choices 15,30,60,90 before turning off.

As for radio tuning buzzing, try tuning in during the day when there is less broadcasting bleed that happens at night time. The manual ,lol, suggests you unwrap the Arial , and warn there is proximal tuner in the unit thus you may need to turn the box ,offset the position to clear in.

I mark the tuning wheel with texts colours for my night stations AM ABC 4BC and Blind Radio.

2day post delivery on 22 day Christmas sale. My 20+ year old radio clock is just a radio now with breakdown code on screen 😲

        • Really? Mine only has sleep options of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 minutes when you press the snooze button multiple times. Mine is ICF-C1. is that different from ICF-C1B? I thought the B = Black?

  • +1

Tried to order to deliver to P.O. Box but no deal, that is a deal breaker for me.

    • Yes, I regret ordering it now because I missed the delivery, and now I have hang around all day friday for dhl to come so I can sign the package.. all for a friggin $20 item. i have my brothers dog staying with me so that's an added complication.

apparently sony gave strict instructions it must be signed for.

      grrr

      never again

(so pretty much, full time workers can't use sony online?)

  • +1

I got one last time. NO DIGITAL PRESETS!!

  • Radio alarm clocks? I thought only tassie was that many decades behind but yeah sure I've been proven wrong before.

  • Thanks OP! Bought one

  • It doesn't work for sign-up. I always get " An error occurred please try again later. " after I clicked "Create a new account now".

Of course I made sure that I satisfy all demands, e.g. "password must be at least 8 characters in length, contain one number, one uppercase character, one lowercase character and one special character."

    • Tried again this morning, same error. Did anyone else get this?

      • I had a similar problem trying to create an account on my laptop, but it worked when I tried on a mobile phone. So, maybe try creating the account on a different device if possible.

        • Doesn't work on my mobile phone either (android)…

  • Not a bargain. Cheaper here

    • +2

I know what you're saying, but for an extra $4 delivered and time/money saved not having to drive to several different Coles since it has been ozbargained…

    • pretty hard to find stock, called up Customer Care and the product is actually discontinued
