itseems your quadcore is 820 vs this offer at 425. are they comparable? or does the value for money work out better for this instead?

      • +1

Regarding dual sim standby, 820 was on a list on whirlpool which allowed both sims to work on our 3g based system, 425 I believe wasn't. So dual sim is crippled.
As I know nothing much about phones, I'm just pointing out incase it's important.
        See: https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/dual_sim_4g3g_phones
IE. dont buy this phone unless you dont care or find out different.

        • I agree. All my Moto phones are crippled by the 2G shut down :(

        • +1

@wildwild: Im pretty much torn as i want a dual sim phone for travelling but the 2G shutdown makes this a single sim phone in future…(having said that the other options all seem to be over $300 unless you count modding the Redmit Note 3….)

I bought a moto to replace my xiaomi because of 2G closure, and the moto is running 3G on one sim and 3/4G on the other sim.

          its the moto G4 plus…and it has band 28 on 4G :-)

other option is the Redmi note 4 at about $270 AU ……. but for $60 more get the moto G4 plus, has band 28 and Australian warranty if you get it from Australian sellers.

I'm starting to be over these phones made for the chinese market not Australian and always seem to be missing something.

        • @wildwild:

I went with the Lenovo ZUK Z2 for the smaller 5" screen (waiting for it to arrive from China) and I will be flashing it with stock firmware.

        • @garage sale:

Hey, interested in your comments on dual SIM for the G4+ as I'll be in the same boat as many come 2G full closure.

Are you positive its running 3G or higher as when I googled it seems to be 2G like others. Not doubting your word, but wondering if there is a specific model id I need to look for.

          Thanks.

        • @garage sale: agree. On my 5th Xiaomi at the moment. Redmi pro bought from lightinthebox. Absolute nightmare, filled with malware. Spent 4 days trying to fix and install a stock rom. I am giving up on Xiaomi phones that released only in China. Not worth the price unless it comes with official global ROM.

        • @bamsegod:

Follow these links on the confirm dual SIM phones that will work with the 2G shutdown. The ZUK 2 does not have band 28 but still meets my needs of 5" screen :)

        • @wildwild: Cheers. Seems the list is quite limited and very few budget phones sadly.

  • edit. These seem to be preorders.

  • Sheeet that's a good deal. Tempted to grab just for the price, but it's pretty well equal with my mainer I've had since 2014.

Based on my experience with Xiaomi phones, the so called global ROM is just a ROM the seller decided to install. It can be a bit of luck of the draw. Some ROMs are okay, but some of these "non-official" global ROMs are bad. I purchased two phones (Mi4c) from the same seller at different times. The two phones appear to be from two different batches (the LCD screen is different between the two - the white balance is clearly different). The second one I purchased had a newer ROM, but it isn't better. It came with a lot of bloatware and despite having a newer MIUI version, it was missing Australia as one of the regional settings (even though English language option is there). The phone was not bootloader locked (which is good).

However, every day, it would have ads popping up on the phone, which was really annoying. I tried many things to figure out which app is doing it (uninstall so many system apps, but it still showed google ads every day). I decided to flash the latest official ROM (which appears to be a ROM designed for Chinese market). Google play then stopped working. It took a lot of time and effort to re-enable it (due to some of the apps on the phone which are used by Google play store are incompatible with the Google play store apk I found initially) - I installed the official ROM through the updater app. Anyway, the pop up ads have stopped after installing the official ROM. However, the phone's bootloader is now locked.

Don't believe in all these official global ROM claims. It just means they install a ROM with Google Play store included (plus a whole bunch of languages). Some of those global ROMs can be unpleasant and full of bloatware.

There is a difference between the Xiaomi phones that have a "global rom" installed, and the international edition phones. From what I've seen in the past, the "global rom" phones has the bloatware and Chinese apps, but have play-store installed, where-as the international edition phones have a genuinely different rom, different packaging and English instruction manual.

I've personally bought a Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 (Prime), Redmi Note 3 (Kate) and Redmi 3s (Pro). The Redmi note 2 (only being a global rom phone), came with the usual bloatware, Chinese box and manual, and power adapter, Where as the Redmi Note 3 and Redmi 3s were marketed as official international edition phones, and included European power adapters (still useless to me), English packaging (which looks much like an iPhone box), English manuals, No bloatware or Chinese apps, sealed boxes, OTA updates, etc.

      • How is the Redmi Note 3 (Kate)?

        • As with any phone, it has it's positives and negatives. The battery is awesome, and could easily last me a day and a half with what I consider to be heavy use (GPS, audio streaming, web browsing and gaming etc.), the finger print scanner is nice, audio sounds decent through headphones, performance is on point and the OS is regularly updated. My only gripes are the screen performance in sunlight isn't so good (looks completely washed out), and the camera is really as poor in low light as everyone says. Would I buy another one? Absolutely.

        • Screen is one of the hardware components which I found to be inconsistent. Having two same model phones, there is definitely a difference between the two in terms of display. One has better contrast, more vibrant, and more accurate colours. The other one is simply inferior. I bought the second one mainly because I thought the LCD screen on the first one is pretty good. However, had I known the second one would have a different (and inferior) LCD screen, I wouldn't have purchased it.

        • @netsurfer:

The second one might have been a copy or refurbished :(

        • @wildwild: It is known that Xiaomi source hardware components from multiple vendors. It's not just the LCD screen. Camera module is another component that Xiaomi is known to source from multiple vendors. Retailers get them in batches and newer batches aren't necessary better.

Apple source LCD screens and other components from multiple vendors too.

    • Not as true anymore since Xiaomi locked the bootloader and prevented sellers from putting anything else on it.

'Global' ROM depends on your device and if Xiaomi support it: http://en.miui.com/download.html

    • It must have an adware/malware built in the system. Used stuburn trojan killer or malware bytes
