Private Internet Access VPN 12 Month Subscription for USD $31.95 (~AUD $45)

340

Standard price is USD$39.95 per 12 months, but a PIA rep sent me the link to the 'retention' page which does not require you to have had a previous account, nor does it appear to have an expiry date. No codes or coupons - the price should simply come up as USD $31.95.

Not as good as the $29.99 deal they have every so often, and some of the more privacy paranoid might have issues with the company being US-based (see the following page for alternatives if that's the case), but for the price it's fast, has great customer support and is definitely excellent value.

Do you know whether it will tack onto the end of an existing account?

    • Want to know too

    • You'll have to ask the support team if they'll let you do it. From past experience they're generally good at 'price matches' if your existing plan is more expensive than a current sale price, but I don't think you'll automatically get the discount otherwise

      • I saw that the other day, it's only 500mb data free, and no ToS shown unless you sign up.

What's the advantages of getting this?

    • You'll save USD $8 off the standard price for a pretty good VPN service. I've used PIA before and found them to provide fast servers in a range of countries, their own software for ease of use (OpenVPN if you want maximum security), and unlike some VPNs they don't keep logs of network traffic, making it harder for authorities to identify you or your online activity.

That said, they're based in the US so you never know what NSA program is snooping on them (or any other American-based organisation for that matter), but it comes down to whether you're paranoid about these things, and are willing to pay a higher price for the added security of the VPN provider based in Panama or some other tax haven in the Caribbean.

Good service, easy to cancel if you want, used when I was in the USA using the Australian IP's they provided and was very good.

How long have you been with them &, now that AU is letting ISP's block certain sites, what's the speed when you do connect (& what location works best, iyho)?

      $25 seems way too cheap?

("Lifetime" = their lifetime as a business- lol). At least they claim to have been around for three years— is that a long time for a VPN co?

I'm using lifetime for over 13 months. it's pretty fast. the only thing i like in cryptic vpn is easy port forwarding.
and yeah it is pretty fast. if you don't trust me you can get the 1 month or 2 days plan to give it a try.
BUT, it doesn't have many server locations. IT HAS THE MAIN COUNTRIES WE NEED.

  • they don't support US netflix so I swapped to PureVPN :-)

    all is good again

    • I already have a PIA subscription up till September, so not sure I can switch to PureVPN.

Are you 100% sure that Pure works with US Netflix?

    • Looks like their 2 year deal is on par with PIA price-wise, so if they do the trick for you go for it! How do you find their server speeds? Similar to PIA?

I am still using TorGuard from the past deal…

What's the real life experience between PIA and TorGuard? Any suggestions?

PS: I have nothing wrong with TorGuard - it's quite fast and reliable at least from their Melbourne server…

  • Is it possible to get US Netflix on my Optus Fetch box if I use PUREVPN? Or do you have to do it through a computer?

    • You will need to configure a vpn server on your network, and then assign routes to your desired destination. Some modem/routers come with a built in vpn client which makes it easier - you need to check you can add static routes.

  • Especially useful now that ISPs are blocking access to torrent sites…

Enter "DISCOUNT10" in the coupon code field below to get 10% extra discount.
    Total : $53.10 for 2 years.

  • My kids occasionally d/l US TV to watch later. We're not huge into any of it otherwise.

Is the $25 cryptic best, iyho?

    • They could be alright, but it's best to check a few online reviews (maybe Whirlpool forums for the Aussie perspective) to see if their speeds are decent or not. It might be worth paying a little more for a VPN that has decent speeds, rather than go super cheap and watch as your torrents take weeks to download.

I've personally had no troubles with PIA, and I've used Cyberghost as well and found them to be alright too. Maybe choose one with a 7 day money-back guarantee and see how you like the speeds?

  • PIA used to be by far the best back then according to Reddit but now many have jumped off the wagon citing that their speeds have gotten terrible. I have also noticed the same especially with torrents lately.

I have until April when mine runs out and based on what I've researched, I believe AirVPN is the go now.

  • I have been using PIA for about a year/half now. now and then, it disconnects and I have to wait about 30s-1min until it reconnects.
I am currently with optus and I can no longer access the good ol' pirate bay getting "ACCESS TO THIS WEBSITE HAS BEEN DISABLED BECAUSE THE FEDERAL COURT OF AUSTRALIA HAS DETERMINED THAT IT INFRINGES OR FACILITATES THE INFRINGEMENT OF COPYRIGHT." An error that should not come up at all via VPN to the US.
I am wondering if the PIA client is corrupt.

    • Is that the DNS related issues?

    • That's just because you're using Optus' DNS servers. Change the settings in your router/device to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 to bypass this.

    Question about PureVPN.

Do they have a socks5 proxy? (preferably in some far away remote country?)

PIA has a socks5 proxy which is great for any torrent data
