PPSR/REVS Vehicle Check - $3.40 @ PPSR.gov.au

5250

The PPSR is used to find out if there's any money owing on a car, or if it's previously been written off.

This is the normal price, there's no denying that, however many people don't realise how cheap and easy the service is. Many sites offer the same thing for $10 or more, when the standard government price is considerably less!

A few horror stories in the forums lately would've been sorted very early on if they had've consulted this site before buying/putting a deposit down.

Bookmark the site, after test driving the car you're looking at, sit in your car and generate the check, then decide from there if you want to purchase the car.

    • Spackbace: I'm a bit out of the loop these days. Where do we stand as far as different states WOVR's being linked up? I remember a number of years ago, if a car was written off in one state it wouldn't come in another.

Obviously WA is an isolated state, but afaik they're linked. I have vague recollections of someones check coming back as a write-off in another state.

I guess since the site I've linked to is the Aus-wide registry, it doesn't separate on the state level :)

I used to work in the PPSR call centre. It amazed me how many people would search on ppsr.com.au and not the official ppsr.gov.au and then complain. People would also get angry at us that the vehicle had been listed as stolen or written off.

  • I have been able to call vicroads on several occasions and get this info free but I guess depends who you get on the line.

  • I am a bit confused now. I paid $22 for Vehicle History Report from Service NSW which is a government website too. How is this report different from it? $22 report included registration details, CTP details, written-off and stolen vehicle records, and usage type records. I guess $3.40 report would only show written-off vehicle records. Correct?

This shows vehicle write-off status and encumbrances, yours shows:

      • if and why the vehicle was written-off anywhere in Australia from 2004
      • if the vehicle, its number plates or engine are stolen
      • the number of registered operators in NSW
      • the vehicle's past use, for example, as a taxi/hire car
      • if the vehicle has single/joint registered operators, and
      • the vehicle's first registration date in NSW.

I've highlighted the parts that are different (that appear to be). Up to you, or anyone else, if that's worth the extra cost. To me, nope.

Thanks for this! I didn't know about this service at all. Why do people keep repeating that it needs to be in the forums, don't they read prior comments? I guess ozbargainers are sheep and bleat the same tune…

Because how is it a deal when it's the standard fee?

If anything, this service is overpriced and should be free IMO. The report itself is very basic and doesn't give much context. I bought a car from a dealer and this report said there was an encumbrance on the car. This might have scared other people off from the purchase but I knew the report was not up to date because there is no way a major dealership would sell a car that has still has a financial interest.

      • No you're not getting what I said, why is it being repeated and why aren't people reading prior comments… Don't you think people have gotten the message by now?

  • Great tip OP! Thanks

  • Thanks Spack!

    Thanks for sharing OP

Thanks so much for this. I emailed it to my possible buyer and also printed it out and told them how they could do it. I feel it lent a great deal of credibility to the sale.

It is amazing how many google results for PPSR, return premium priced search interfaces for an inexpensive government site. I clicked a link that I thought was PPSR, only to find the actual site was carhistory, and $25 for a $3.40 search.
