  • Sounds too good to be true, what's the catch??

    • +5

Sim costs US$21 plus US$10.84 shipping to Aus. So your initial outlay is $73.84 USD which is over AU$100 at today's exchange rates.

Local SIMs in countries don't cost $100, even if you are visiting several countries and buying a SIM in each. You also get calls and SMS and maybe even data with a local SIM.

Also does not include videos, images or calls.

      • Pretty much sums it up. I think this is a good idea in concept but not really good value if that makes any sense.

I realise the cart total on their page was in AUD, not USD, so initial outlay is $73.84 AUD, which is still expensive

        • I do concur that for you it is expensive …you have done the maths based on your travel, time and costs but would you concede that this is a great option for many. imagine asking your travelling elderly relatives to go through a SIM swapping exercise as they move around the globe just so they can text u once a day saying I am okay. There are many great use cases for this product. I don't think the OP deserves so many NEGs but perhaps the question is.. is this in fact a deal/bargain? Perhaps the post is better for a forum as a resource for travellers. A bargain may be considered a reduction in the standard price perhaps for a given time frame. now I feel silly for upvoung the post as I have encouraged it .. ha!

  • USD $42 for first timers? how would the other person reply back? They will have to buy this pack or pay high cost to reply back?

    • What it's "WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, WeChat, LINE, Telegram and many other Instant Messaging apps"

      • I use this app, free calls to many countries. They have updated the app now to allow only 1200 minutes per month but I didn't update mine yet.

        • You can't use that app for free when roaming, that's the point of the sim. It's not an app.

        • @willoz: I just buy local sim with data and use whatsapp etc or same app.

        • @Jimmy007:

the point of his thread is the OP is suggesting an alternative for some users who don't want to deal with swapping in country by country SIMS ..if this works for you that is great if not and the $ and time make sense go for the local SIM as u do now. Choice breeds bargains provided u read the fine print and do some maths :-)

  • Can i use ICQ with this?

    • +2

Yeah, compatible with mIRC as well.

    • -1

No it doesn't. ICQ is 20 years old already.

T & C, so just 75MB data was the limit.

It is understood that in the event that the daily threshold of 10 MB is exceeded in the use of the services, data traffic and messaging may be slowed down up and/or limited to midnight of that given day; in the event that the monthly threshold of 25 MB is exceeded in the use of the services, data traffic and messaging may be slowed down up to midnight of the last day of that given month. Moreover, data traffic and messaging may be slowed down up to the expiration date of the annual plan paid in accordance with Article 1 of these General Terms and Conditions when an overall threshold of 75 MB is exceeded. ChatSim S.r.l. may request the early payment of a new annual plan to restore the initial conditions of the services.
Please note that in the Countries of the Zone 4 and 5 specified at www.chatsim.com 5 kB are calculated every kB; in the Country of the Zone 6, 25 kB are calculated every kB. ChatSim S.r.l. is also entitled to suspend and/or disable your ChatSim if one of the following situations occur: (i) increased traffic considered abnormal compared to prior traffic; (ii) increased traffic exceeding the mean traffic generated by all active ChatSim cards; (iii) traffic volume other than that provided for by the payment of the annual rate.

The initial outlay is just over 72$ AUD.

Set the multimedia pack to be None.

The 'catch' is most people want to be able to send media (i.e. pictures).

So if you just need a sim to send text messages virtually anywhere on the planet …text only! Then this is a great little tool to have. If you need more then you need to cost in the media $ and figure out if it is better to buy local SIMS.

    The apps are here: https://www.chatsim.com/applications

So … YMMV ..some will benefit ..others will not. Essentially if you are posting media then this will likely end up costing you more.

I think something like know roaming would be much better value?

    • This does look much better value! If I read it right, the free WhatsApp does not depend on buying any data packs, or perhaps even any prepaid credit on the account, I.e. just need to pay $9.99 for the SIM. Is that correct and have you used them?

      • Haven't used them, so not sure. Just ordered the SIM myself, posted this as a deal here.

      Nice find Rorschach.

KnowRoaming is now permitting the use of WhatsApp (this includes messages, voice, pictures, and calls) without incurring any associated data charges. When using WhatsApp, usage will seemingly deduct balance from your account, however all deductions for WhatsApp usage will be refunded within 2 hours of the deduction. This usage can be monitored within the KnowRoaming App under the Usage section, where "Free WhatsApp Usage" is displayed. NO CREDIT REQUIRED + NO CATCHES

Seems too good to be true (and probably deserves its own thread).
