  • Loved this mod in UT

  • At first I was thinking of Alien Breed: Impact and thought 'Oh what, it's free now?'. Even looks the same

  • Great freebie!

  • Thanks Valve!! Thanks for posting it here too :)

  • It's great to see Steam offering all this content up, and the decent deals on their other titles. However as a Mac user, I'd also like to see these become cross platform. It's all well and good to have a Mac client available, but without the content, it's a bit disappointing. No doubt this will change in time, I just hope this love from Steam keeps flowing.

    • Wouldn't be surprised if the freebie is because they're launching a port for Mac as well. (similar to what they did with Portal)
Anything that uses the Source Engine (as this does) should be easier to port to Mac.

      • I don't think it being free has anything to do with the possibility of it coming to the Mac since it hasn't even come out on the PC yet. Portal was out for ages on the PC before it came out on Mac.

    • This. I love steam, and have bought a couple of the games for my Mac, but would like to see some more! Even the specials seem to have stopped… I think there was only one game on special for us last week and it was one of those point/click puzzle adventure games. :(

  • completely free forever?

    • yep, great news

      I love you steam

  • Looks like a fun game.

  • I actually really wanted to post this deal, but I saw what happened here http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/28203
and decided to wait this one out.

But this is an awesome game, comparable to the Shadowgrounds series. It's most definitely worth playing!

    • It is a grey area.

The idea being, that there are thousands or more free programs and downloads on the internet.

We don't want to flood the site with them all, so it was decided permanently free things might have to stay off the bargain page. (Maybe they can appear on the forums but again, we don't want to flood that either)

That said, sometimes a little flexibility is given to deals, especially if a lot of people are voting there is a benefit.

      It's a grey area.

and in relation to that other deal, no I didn't even know it was on here; I must have missed it.

      • Yeah, it all makes sense, but sometimes you just can't tell how people will react to a deal.
It's just another risk we have take. :/
But thanks for clearing that up somewhat!

  • Can someone please explain how to get up and running with this game for a complete noob?

My understanding is i simply download and inztall:
    -Steam Client
    -Alien Swarm files

    ?

My internet is U/S at the moment and i will unfortunately have to download the above on my mobiile phone (connect to laptop) so any unnecessary downloadings will be likely be avoided.

    • Correct. Once you have the Steam client installed on your PC it manages the download of content from the Content Distribution Servers. The client also manages , gameplay connections, licensing, chat, community etc

You just search for the Game within searchbox in the client and then download the game

Steam allows you to stop and resume downloads - depending on your ISP such downloads may be unmetered.

  • how much is UT these days?

    • +1

Firstly, NOTE, this game does not require UT2K4 whatsoever.
      If your question still applies:
Unreal Tournament 2004: Editor's Choice Edition $14.99 USD @ Steam

Once again - this bargain does not require UT2K4.

      • cheers for that!

  • Thank you very much. Please keep posting this kind of deal in future :D

  • Unlocks in 18 hours, according to the Steam store …

  • I am so pumped to download this game. It looks like like alien Breed but better!
    <3 steam

  • Love when steam gives away small games.
Should be part of their business model, would get alot (more?) of people using the steam client.

    • +1

isn't that exactly what they are doing?

  • Can't wait to play!

    10 hours to go :)

  • Now downloading this great freebie.
    Guys don't forget!

  • If the servers is flooded due to too many connections, try switching to a local server.

ie. Switching from Australia - WA to Australia - WA (3FL) made my connection go from a timed out connection to max speed :)

  • does this need to be "added" onto your account within a certain timeframe?

    • as far as i can tell, this is a free game and it will always be free.

  • even after creating and verifying email, the system says account does not exist. Any advise?

  • pretty decent game for online play :D

  • Was playing it just then.
    Pretty cool.

  • Wish there was a way to get the binaries from someone who has already downloaded it and add/register the game to my Steam account to save quota (my friend has a large internet quota and would be happy to download it).

    • +1

You can do that, just copy their 'Alien Swarm' folder from their SteamApps/common directory and paste it into your own same directory. Steam should detect the files and only need to download a small patch to start playing.

      • I was wondering if that would work ;-) Will try it when I get the chance. Thanks.

        • You can also get a friend with it to 'make a backup' in the steam games list. Then you get a folder with an executable that will automatically install everything into your steam folder for you. I used it for this (Telstra hardly host any steam content on their servers anymore) and it worked a treat.

    • This games 2gb!
Took me a while to download.
