  • Since this is the NextG version, I guess it can't be used on 3G networks (once it's unlocked)?

i think the nextg specific version is the 6121

    • There is no such thing as a nextG only phone.
It will work on any carrier

      • The 6120/6121 models support UMTS 850/2100 and UMTS 900/2100
        nextg is on 900mhz

        • next g is UTMS850

          not 900.

        • nextg is on 900mhz

          No.
          NextG is 850mhz

NextG is also 2100mhz. The term NextG os just a marketing thing

It still doesnt change what I originally said which is that there is no such thing as a NextG only phone.
Once unlocked this phone can be used with any carrier.

          • @anthony: Except that Telstra refers to its 850 MHz networg as NextG.

Also, NextG phones, as you state, operate at 850 MHz and 2100 MHz (for 3G). So, even if you unlock it, it won't work on the regional networks of Vodafone and Optus.

Vodafone has now rolled out some 850 MHz (3G) but still doens't have the breadth of its 900 Mhz network.

The fact is that Telstra used a 3G frequency that, at the time, was not broadly (and still isn't) used by carriers around the worlds.

Therefore, NextG handsets, even if unlocked, can be of limited use* on networks other than NextG.

            * Depends on the physical location and other network type.

NextG is simply marketing for 3G
NextG is 2100mhz or 850 mhz, NextG does not refer to only 850mhz. It is simply a marketing name, it has nothing to do with the frequency.

Using 3G 2100mhz in a city still means you are on telstras "NextG" network.

              • @anthony: And a NextG phone will be next to useless with the SIM card of another carrier outside of a metro area. There will be almost no 3G except in some towns where Optus has 3G 2100mhz.

The introduction of quadband 3G phones (e.g. iPhone 4 and latest Nokia smartphone) should see this ridiculous situation change.

                  I have never said different.
The original question was if a NextG phone woukd work on any carrier and the answer is yes.

The phone will not be useless either.
You are fogretting that the 2G GSM network is very widespread so even if you used this phone on another carrier if the phone cannot puck up UTMS 850 because the carrier does not use it the phone can still pick up GSM 2G signals.

The introduction of quadband 3G phones

                  Quadband phones are not new

Whilst you may know all of the answers, others may not. It would thus be good to provide a comprehensive response if you're going to provde one at all ;)
