Seems quite effective for looking for hot spots around the house. I've only had a quick fiddle so far but it looks handy.

  • $20 cheaper??

    • I know it's not a huge discount, but these seem to usually be sold at full RRP. I posted it as much to let people know they exist.

      • I think the ones from SEEK are a better product, though not available locally so you need to import.

-I think you were looking for OzGadget .. or maybe just the forums.

Does it come with a "click-click-click-click" sound to make us look like Predator? And does it count down to self-explode as well if you lose?

  • +1

BTW.. resolution isnt too great. 640x480 for the visual and actual thermal resolution is 160x120 for heat detection. Nice toy if it wasnt $380.

    • -6

640x480 for the visual and actual thermal resolution is 160x120 for heat detection.

I literally wouldn't even buy this if it was being sold for $5 by gearbest…

    • +2

I think it's still a useful tool, certainly cheaper than the next steps up. The resolution is probably not the weakest issue, possibly the sensitivity is. There's a chart on this page comparing specs for various Flir models:

    • +2

Most thermal cameras are very low resolution.
      The earlier model was 80x80.

You can do plenty of troubleshooting with 160x120.

Also, if you're keen on the thermal imaging sensor and you're also after a new phone, I think the waterproof (and shockproof?) Cat S60 has one built in and can be bought for around the same price.

Not sure how it performs or the quality of the build though…

    • +3

I have the S60. Happy to answer any questions about it if anyone has any. It's built like a tank and I think it's fantastic but may not be for everyone. Just send me a message if anyone wants any info.

      • Assuming the S60 was completely off, roughly how long would it take to get to the point where I could use the thermal camera?
Assuming the S60 was on but in standby, roughly how long would it take to get to the point where I could use the thermal camera?
Do you need to run any special apps to use the thermal camera?

Assuming the S60 was completely off, roughly how long would it take to get to the point where I could use the thermal camera?

          47 seconds.

Assuming the S60 was on but in standby, roughly how long would it take to get to the point where I could use the thermal camera?

          7 seconds.

Do you need to run any special apps to use the thermal camera?

          The MyFLIR app comes preinstalled.

    • Around the same price? From where?

      • +1

never seen it for that price..maybe double.

      • yeah, sorry. My bad. I thought I saw it for that price, but it was in GBP…

        Supnigs is right

    • What's the temperature range it can handle? Can it record video, or just take photos?

      • +1

Yes it can record video. It's grainy but it works. As for the temperature range I'm not exactly sure, but it was accurate with dry ice. So it's a pretty broad range

      • +1

It can only handle -20 to 120 degrees C.

  • How does this compare to the Seek Thermal camera which is the high res sensor (206x156) and only USD$200?

    • Interesting. That's a lot cheaper. The Flir One has a normal camera in it too which can be combined with the thermal image which makes it easier to identify what you're looking at. The Seek seems to only be a thermal image. Here's a review comparing it to an earlier lower spec version of the Flir One:

      http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2014/12/seek-thermal-review-smartp…

    • This has MSX which makes it easier to see where the heat is. The second camera on the FLIR One adds an outline to the thermal image.
Also, the performance of the Seek when it was first released wasn't very convincing. Not sure if they've improved now.

      • +2

Don't get the seek. I originally got the seek thinking the higher resolution is better. It was horrible and I couldn't make out much at all. Had to return it all the way back to the US.

Bought the flir one from their official site and it's infinitely better than the seek.

I have Flir One for Android. Can be found cheaper than this.
For what it is - great little device. It was not meant for the professional work.
I got it, as it was almost the same price than hiring E5 camera ($299 back then, which has a smaller sensor) from the same company
Use it often and good enough for what I need
Got mine for $329 (plus post) from Mwave, but they dont seem to stock it now

I would also recommend taking few free courses available through www.infraredtraining.com

I wonder if you can use this to "see" the studs in your walls (if you run aircon to cool the outside surface first - the studs would retain heat?) or dont they use thermal cameras to detect termite nests in walls etc ?

    • Was wondering the same thing, anyone comment on the termite detection ability.

This is one of my rooms with builders forgetting to insulate bulkhead
      https://postimg.org/image/ywxre0sqh/

      • Wow. Kinda stands out a bit.

      • Did you send them the photo?

        • The house is 3yo now. Did not have the camera back then. But did help out a friend that just finished building and had sections of insulation either removed or moved out of its place

For everyone's benefit - if you have bulkheads, lowered/raised parts of the ceiling - do check your insulation, as sides of it will not be insulated. Another common place is around cornices, as they cannot easily get there to insulate that part of the ceiling

        • @SergeyAU:

Seems life is getting overcomplicated. You have to check anything and everything.

At least you'll have it cooler now.

        • @bargainparker:
Isn't that like having a car but not driving it?

        • @0xFFFF:

When you are buying something or paying for service would you not check it? I was saying that you can't rely on someone's honesty, like in this case where workers didn't do the job properly and the owner only found it out by accident.

        • @bargainparker:

Ohhhh… Gotcha. I read that as - Now he has the thermal camera, he has to run around and check everything with it.

If anyone is in melbourne and wants a hands on before you buy, I've got one (I'm in Rosanna) and would be happy to show it to you.

    • Hot water and drainage pipes behind a tiled wall

Huh neat - good tip about being able to see the drainage pipe after some hot water has been through.
You dont have any showing wall studs ? I thought if the room walls are recently cooled with aircon the internal studs may still shine through..

      • I just tried it and couldn't see any, even with a fixed span. I think the temperature effects of a stud behind gyprock are too minor under normal circumstances to be picked up with a consumer device like this.

It might work if I tried it on an exterior wall and it was hot outside. Unfortunately I don't have any studded walls facing outdoors!

  • I'm waiting for the new third generation which is only US $199 compared to US $249 for this one.

Has a new infrared processor, higher resolution visual camera, adjustable connector so you can use it with cases and it has Type C!

    Available from May.

Also a new Pro version for US $399 and some newer higher end models.

    • Then it is just a toy for you.
I had to get one as I had a leak in the shower and needed to see where it was.

      • Then it is just a toy for you.

        That's a pretty stupid comment.

I had to get one as I had a leak in the shower and needed to see where it was.

You knew where the leak was.</dumb comment>

I plan to use mine for many uses around the house from checking pipes, checking for leaks, checking ceiling insulation (installing new insulation), leaks in the roof, termite activity, air leaks and the list goes on. But as all my phones have Type C I have been waiting for the updated model.

        • I meant that if you can wait that long, then you are in no real rush. And if you are not, then you dont really need it. But do I care if you buy it or not - not really. Just a comment in line with bchliu's comment earlier on

  • finally! been wanting a infrared camera for my phone for ages!
