  • That's a very specific amount.

The number '8' is all about Luck!

        Yes, Chinese New Year.

But title is incorrect - you have to spend $288 OR MORE. Trying to spend exactly $288 would be difficult.

  • Sounds good but I have no Unionpay card though.

  • I wonder how many OzBargainers (not from China) would have a UnionPay Card😯
    新年快乐

      • May not qualify by t&c:
A cardholder shall present his/her UnionPay card (card number starting with 62) and pay his/her bill(s) using UnionPay's online system before he can enjoy relevant offers.

Prepaid travel money card should begin with 62.
But you won't be paying your bill online like with a CC & may not qualify for gift card promotion😯

So a pretty targeted offer sent to existing card holders, shown in deal link.

  • Only @1 Myers per major State.
    Best to read t&c😯

Only @ a few main Myers per major State.

  • Also only on selected items: ie in-store across cosmetics, apparel and homeware - pretty limited.

is it targeted or implicitly racist? most if not all union pay cardholder is chinese.
remember deal from 'kaki lima restaurant in melbourne' got downvoted because its deal specific for singaporean card holders?

    • Obviously targeted at a very specific demographic.

Pretty sure there is no bank in Australia that offers UnionPay? Other than merchant facilities.

      • Bank of China (the Australian offshoot) has unionpay debit cards. These however are mostly aimed at Chinese studying in Australia

      Remember it well.
That restaurant deal for a free drink with a meal (wow!) was available to anyone who joined the Singapore students association - not just Singaporeans. The restaurant only offered the deal to attract customers. I've seen Singaporeans travel distances & large groups for good food (eg Singapore to Malacca on weekends). Not a bad group to attract if you own a food business

This deal is for Chinese New Year & promoted only to Union Pay card holders. Like any credit card offer - restricted to those members. I've reported the deal as targetted, so it's up to the Mods to decide.

I don't think you can show it is racist (even implicitly) - for a business or bank to offer it's customers an exclusive offer.

People throw around the term racist without understanding it's meaning under Australian law.

We're at most dealing with discrimination based on nationality here (not racism) - but would very likely be thrown out: Australians & other nationalities living & banking in China could obtain this deal in Australia with their Union Pay card.

I've won an out of court settlement against an Australian business for discrimination based on my nationality (Australian) - so know a bit about the subject. Legal advice at the time was it was most likely to fail, but my win has helped in further discrimination claims by Australians.

Don't forget OzBargain had its origins in the Asian student community!

But as I commented above, I very much doubt many OzBargainers originating from outside China would have a Union Pay card. While the card is accepted by many businesses & banks here, obtaining a Union Pay card is probably difficult in Australia.

I can't find how I can get a Union Pay card in Australia - but as I don't need any cosmetics, apparel or homewares - I'm not missing anything with this very limited deal.

(I've already copped abuse (some being taken down almost immediately as extremely sexist & racist - strange for a white male Anglo) for stating these aspects of Australian law, in that restaurant deal.)

      • I've got one of the load and go's that I've used as a backup in China. While it's improved in recent years, a lot of the Chinese bank ATMs do not accept Visa/MasterCard.

        • Link given above. But deal t&c may mean those Union Pay cards are excluded from this offer.

Definitely the bank to use in China. I've had difficulty in the past finding suitable ATMs. But that's nothing to some countries I've visited😯

I believe you can easily get Union pay credit or debit card from bank of china in Australia. It was done in 30 minutes for me.
