Are the prawns from China also?

    • Thailand I would imagine, were they rip their eyes out to make more eggs.

      • +19

I hear they also expose them to copious amounts of dihydrogen monoxide to make them grow several times their size.

        • I hear they also expose them to copious amounts of dihydrogen monoxide to make them grow several times their size.

That explains those kids I see in the vans on the southside.

      • +2

Shit, had never heard of eyestalk ablation until now. Animal husbandry is pretty horrible in all its forms.

        • +1

Yep, I hadn't either…I never fail to be both simultaneously impressed & repulsed by the ingenuity of humans when it comes to usurping other species.

  • +2

Yeah I didn't rate them that great bought them once never again. Stick to the Hong Kong kitchen dumplings there better quality.

    • +1

Which is on specials at woolies for $7?

    • +9

I actually prefer these over the kitchen dumplings. Taste better IMHO.

      • +1

Yeah these are our favourite too.

        • Hello Sybil.

  • Just bought some at Costco yesterday!!!

    • +7

      You can return them.

Don't they have a lifetime return policy ?

    • You don't need to take it back. Just take the receipt and talk to Customer service - they will refund the difference.

      • don't think they are on the same quantity
        1.2kg VS 750g?

        • Not sure if they accept frozen foods return after certain time like 1 hour

So wild prawns sold into Thailand as mostly from the Mekong river delta, one of the most polluted open sewers in all Asia.
While farmed prawns in Thailand are produced with slave labour doing 20hr shifts with regular motivational executions
    Don't Choke

    • +3

then you better start planning living on MARS, cuz this earth ain't getting cleaner, plus we're a nation of importers

      • -1

        Just buy local prawns
        It's not that difficult
You see all those big boats that kind of looks like fishing boats at the marina
        Their called trawlers,
that's where all the fresh local seafood comes from

        • +7

Ain't no rich man.. Even if I do, I won't decide to turn the prawn into gyoza

        • +2

@Droid11: well just enjoy your KB prawn gyoza then,
and don't think about the hot festering open sewer that they come from

        • +4

@Beach Bum: exactly what I'm going to do :) Prawn gyoza in dumpling sauce…yum!

If you're gonna think that much, then you might as well start build your own farm

        • +2

@Droid11: do you mean think at all about where your food comes from
I think you'll find many do
obviously not popular opinion here, but if more people are aware then they may buy healthyer food leading to better quality food being available at better prices
But I shouldn't push my socialist agenda here when there's uber short term profits to be made

        • +3

@Beach Bum: I fully agree and always check the label/refuse to buy frozen sea food made in Vietnam, China, Malaysia, Thailand etc. Major supermarkets are now selling sea food almost entirely caught and processed around the most polluted waters in Asia. We are talking heavy metals here. I think you will find your "socialist agenda" to be very popular with people who understand what Mercury and Cadmium do to humans.
You will also appreciate the fact that there are people who like to have two bowls of Kellogs for breakfast with half a jug of orange juice, feeling terrific about the "healthy and natural" brekky they just started the day with.

        • -3

@angre:kiss (keep it simple stupid) unless you're going to explain what's so bad about corn flakes and OJ your just going to confuse people here

But don't forget most of your frozen veges are now made in china. Check the back of the packs. Why do you think there is such demand for Aussie produce in china,
There are rules and regulations for growing safe food here
          Totally the opposite in china
They put toxic waste in the baby food over there.True Story. Look it up.

        • @Beach Bum:

Don't bother educating the crowd here. Mostly a bunch of teenagers who know it all

        • @Beach Bum: KFC and HJ coupons are among the hottest deals consistently in OZB. Period.

        • @angre: So you're saying I've done the wrong thing by planting those Cornflake, Rice Bubble & Nutri-Grain trees in my backyard…damn! ;)

        • @StewBalls: you'd be better off planting mj,coca and poppys. Seems to be much more popular than food.

        • +1

The government just banned raw prawn imports due to white spot disease. If you want to buy Australian prawns, buy them raw. They'll be expensive though - up to $100/kg from what I've heard due to the aforementioned outbreak.

        • +1

          @Beach Bum:

Then make sure you don't eat out, I am sure majority of the restaurants, cafe, takeaway businesses sell products they source from suppliers who import from countries like China, Vietnam and Thailand which all have problems like you mention. Good luck with that !

        • @sistermay: no worries. I just ask.

        • -1

          @Meconium: less than $30 a kg
What fake news site do you get your info/ wild speculation from?

        • @eatwell365: That's really sad

        • @OneMoreTune: freedom country. every step of our life we make choices and set our own destiny.

        • @Beach Bum: That would make a great kapai puku…

    Happy Chinese New Year

I thought Gyoza are Japanese ???

    • +1

Not sure why you got those upvotes, because you are wrong. They are not originally Japanese.

      • It's hard to trust the voting system and commenting on here when people have multiple accounts/user names. What a life hey… must be fun bahahaha

    • +1

      Maybe Sumerian?

    • +5

      https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/jiaozi#English

      jiaozi

A Chinese crescent-shaped dumpling filled with a minced stuffing and steamed, boiled or fried; the Chinese equivalent of the Japanese gyoza. Jiaozi was introduced into Japan where it is popularized as gyoza

    • Came to make the same comment JV! Lol

    • product of china…. the irony

    • +6

I thought Gyoza are Japanese ???

      Can't see any problem here.
Enjoy Japanese food from Thailand. And Happy Chinese New Year!

    • +2

The word Gyoza is Japanese dumpling in English.
The pronunciation is possibly from Chinese. The Japanese writing of Gyoza is originated Chinese.

Chinese dumpling is called Jiaozi in English. Period.
If people want to eat traditional Chinese Dumpling, do not mix up Gyoza from Jiaozi. Buy only dumplings that marked as Jiaozi.

People don't know the difference unless being pointed out like Champagne from France and Mozzarella from Italy.
Not everyone knows Kiwi fruit is Chinese gooseberry.

    • +3

Everyone thinks that gyoza are Japanese, and the pronunciation is. But the Japanese recognise that they're Chinese in origin, and there they call them jiaozi (餃子 - same characters). I've had them in both countries, and they're the same. Most things from Japan are originally from China, though for a lot of them, the Japanese have put their own sophisticated spin on it - think bonsai, calligraphy, textiles, and other dishes including ramen (拉麺/ラーメン).

But gyoza and jiaozi are, for all intents and purposes, the same. Weeaboos here may not like that fact, but it's true. We just call them gyoza because we were introduced to them via Japan.

Source: weeaboo who has come to terms with the fact that all awesome Japanese stuff is Chinese in origin and they've been doing it longer

yay next 2 months, midnight snack sorted

  • +4

The prawns are from Vietnam not local. So for those who are cautious about prawns being imported. Be aware of that, especially recently the raw prawns from overseas got banned due to white spot disease.

I assume these are cooked not raw inside

  • -2

    Gyozas are Japanese

  • +2

There are barely any prawn in these anyway….

  • +3

I tried these once. I thought that there was very little prawn in each gyoza. It is almost all pastry and cabbage.

  • +1

the coles price used to be $9 half price for 1kg pack 1.5years ago.

  • +3

I bought a steamer a while ago in the hopes these would come on special again :D

  • Still prefer 1kg for $10 dollars!

  • -1

Had these once ended up throwing them out. Awful quality import prawns and not even proper prawns just minced up stuff.

    • +4

That's what you expect for that price. Or go to Chinatown for proper prawn dumplings for $9.50 (3 prawn dumplings)

    • +3

not even proper prawns just minced up stuff.

Lol, never had a prawn gyoza where it was a whole "proper prawn".

    • +1

What you're talk about are ones that are called "har gow" they have a prawn wrap inside pastry.

  • +1

These taste good but texture a bit mushy. I buy from Asian places now tho, Ho's Dim Sim Kitchen in Pitt St.

  • Had these. Not my cup of tea to be honest. The 客家 frozen dumplings are the best. $5 per pack around 500g but no prawn option.

    • Had these. Not my cup of tea to be honest.

Had these. With cup of green tea. Yum Cha FTW, but the tea tastes bloody awful.

      • LOL

    Same comments again.

    • -1

You've only posted 1 deal in a year. Maybe you should find some so you can give back to the community rather than make crappy, unfunny versions of JV comments?

      • Sorry, I didn't mean to insult you (if that's how you chose to take it). Just an observation.

  • I saw this and was in Coles this morning, disappointed they weren't on special. Starts next week, DOH!

  • -1

These are pretty shite (but I still buy them), but I prefer prawn hacao from Hong Kong Supermarket in Clayton.
