American Express Platinum Edge – Fee Waived First Year (Save $195) + 5,000 Bonus Points + $200 Travel Credit

1390

The American Express Platinum Edge fee free deal is back on, representing a saving of $195 for the first year of card membership. The card doesn’t come with a large serve of bonus points on sign up (just 5,000 AMEX MR points when you spend $750 in the first 3 months of card membership), and has been devalued in the eyes of some people with the replacement of an annual domestic return flight with a $200 travel credit. However, it has a generous points earn for everyday spend which many people will be able to use to their advantage.

Key card benefits:
*5,000 bonus AMEX MR Ascent points for new AMEX customers (transfer these at a rate of 1:1 to airline and hotel partners) when you spend $750 in the first 3 months of card membership.
*$200 Travel Credit every year (use to book flights, car hire, accommodation or experience bookings via AMEX Travel)
*0% p.a. on balance transfers for the first 12 months
*Free supplementary cards (use to access ‘statement credits’)
*Complimentary enrolment in the Membership Rewards Ascent program7 saving you $80 per year
*Complimentary domestic and international Travel Insurance

To apply for the card, you’ll need to report a household income of $50,000 or more.

The Platinum Edge Card will earn you points in the AMEX MR ‘Ascent’ program, with points transferring out at a 1:1 rate to a number of airline programs (excluding Qantas). It’s worth noting that this card is also the highest earning AMEX card for supermarket and petrol spend. You’ll earn:
*3 points per dollar spent at major supermarkets
*2 points per dollar spent at major petrol stations
*1 point per dollar spent on all other purchases excluding utilities, insurance (except those issued by American Express), telecommunication providers and government bodies in Australia where you earn 0.5 points per dollar spent

You will earn 15,000 points instead of the normal 5,000 by using a referral link: AmEx referral Wiki

Just thought I would give my thoughts on the Platinum Edge as a current user of the card. In the past 2 years, I've gone through several different Visa and Amex cards and this is by far my favorite. The supermarket earn of 3 points per dollar is what makes this card so great. We do most of our shopping at supermarkets and even purchase gift cards to other retailers to get the increased point earn (eg Bunnings, Village Cinemas, Rebel Sport, etc). Can purchase Wish cards through Entertainment Book getting 5% off and that still qualifies for the 3 points per dollar.

One of the first things i did when i received my card was become Local Champion at my local Coles supermarket. This gives a bonus point per dollar spent making it 4 points per dollar.

I've used the points in different ways depending on what my need was. Not the best value of points, but I used points to pay for some accommodation. 1 point effectively becomes 1 cent when booked through Amex Travel and/or Webjet.

My best use of points was booking a Business Class flight to Europe through Singapore Airlines for 80,000 points. On normal supermarket spend that requires only $26,666 to be spent to be able to redeem a business class fare. Sounds like a lot, but compared to what other reward programs offer it's great value.

The no annual fee for the first year, and $200 travel credit make the card a brilliant choice.

It has been mentioned earlier, but I have the Explorer card connected the the Platinum Edge's Ascent reward program which offers a better value rewards program. If you have the Explorer, this is seriously worth considering and attempting to get your points moved over to the program which enables you to convert to other frequent flyer programs at 1:1, instead of the 4:3.

    • @pickme how did you get the Ascent and Explorer programs linked? I now have the cards on the same login, but still two seperate points programs. Everytime I call they say if they do it a will have to forfeit all my explorer points… Maybe I'm not saying the right things? What did you say to them exactly to get them linked?

  • Only 5K points :-(

ANZ adventure card is a good one. $225 annual fee for a free domestic return trip each year, 2 lounge passes.

  • +2

Still preferred the one free flight per year over this new card

  • I've booked most of my hotels for Japan, and flight tickets. Can i take advantage of the $200 travel credit still?

    • book the remaining hotel?

cancel and rebook existing ones if they allow free cancellation? check for the price difference though

  • Damn! I literally applied for one last night. I'll see if I can get something back.

  • +1

Already just applied for a free AmEx card (not activated). Apply for this instead and override?

  • +1

What does 5000 points get you?

    • 1 point is worth 0.0074c so about $37 when converting to common gift cards

  • The way I read the T&Cs, being an existing AMEX (Explorer) customer means that not only you don't qualify for the bonus points, but you also have to pay the annual fee. Thoughts?

    • true

Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any other Consumer Credit Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer.

      • But many have received bonus points when holding existing card.

  • +2

Now that AMEX taking off the free return flight deal, this card is not so good anymore…

  • It says in the Terms and Conditions that "To redeem the travel credits, you must have paid the annual fee and have paid your minimum payment by the due date…" Does this mean we can only redeem the $200 travel credits in the second year when we pay the annual fee? And we can't redeem the traval credit in the first year as the annual fee is free? How do we pay the annual fee as mentioned in the Terms and Conditions if the annual fee is waived?

    • I just gave them a call. They said first year annual fee is waived and we can redeem the travel credits after we pay off the first statement.

  • +1

Anyone know if you can downgrade to the essentials card after one year and keep their points?

    • I gave them a call and was advised that we may have to redeem all the points, cancel the Platinum Edge and reapply for an Essentials card.

  • The essentials card posts to the Gateway program while the Edge posts to Ascent (different earn/burn rates) so may have to redeem if changing card.

Also using a referral link earns 15,000 points - available on wiki page

no more free annual domestic flight =(

$200 credit cant pay for flight from WA to eastern states

  • I'm travelling for 6 months this year. Is it worth getting an Amex to pay for all my flights and gain points? Is the explorer card a better option? I've never owned a credit card and have never had the need, but I wonder if the points and other benefits are worth it? I would easily qualify for one and would pay off the balance in time.
    Shall I take the plunge?

If you are travelling then certainly look at the Explorer card - the annual fee is offset by the $400 travel credit and you will get large upfront bonus points. You will also get lounge access and usual travel insurance.

i'm about to be an ex-plat edge cardholder. i'm not much of a point junkie myself, simply because i don't shop or refuel much at the big supermarket chains or their affiliated petrol brands. if you don't need the 3 point per dollar ascent rewards scheme, and like me, applied for the free flight some 5 years ago, you're better off just applying for an amex essentials (or a CPA amex gold if you have a professional membership) for $0 and then get the ANZ traveller card for $225PA if you want to travel interstate once every year like i do.

Some of the additional benefits of the $225 ANZ Travellers + AMEX CPA Gold/Essentials combo over the $195 ascent amex plat edge:
    - Free return interstate flights to more destinations than the old plat edge product
    - 2x virgin lounge passes
    - 2 velocity points to the dollar with the Traveller Amex, 1 for the Visa
    - 3 weeks price protection on purchases
    - No overseas transaction fee
    - signup now and get 60,000 bonus velocity points which is essentially a free one way ticket to Japan and tops the First year annual fee waive on the plat edge and 5,000 points

For the Ozbargainer in you, with this combo:
    - you now have 2 Amexs that can do double the cashback offers
    - you spend $35 more annually, losing 1 point per dollar purchase at big chain supermarkets, but in return get a free return flight (worth $600+) and a pair of lounge passes, I reckon that more than makes up for it
    - you will realise after ozbargaining as long as I have, most of your purchases are made online via paypal or similar, meaning you are likely to earn only 1 point per dollar on the plat edge anyway. I've been a member for 5 years and only accumulated 87,000 points and that included me referring 3 friends at 10,000 points each. So unless you grocery shop for a fairly big family and pay most of your bills (only 0.5 points per dollar and most vendors don't even accept Amex without surcharge) via Amex, I reckon the ANZ+AmexGold combo might be a better option.

Does supplementary card holders qualify for the bonus points?

  • Was rejected for the explorer card last week, although i fulfill all requirements. Probably because i just applied for that CBA $250 cashback a few weeks back?

Maybe there's a rep monitoring us who just want to grab the bargain without paying any interest fee…

    • My wife applied ANZ Black and Explorer in the gap of 2 months, she got both cards approved and got 175,000 points

  • Honestly, comparing the free Virgin flights with the $200 travelling credit, the latter is better off.
The original free flights has limited destinations and when you book, they usually only offers the sales tickets, which only a few would amount to over $200 value in dollar to dollar comparison. Where as the $200 travelling credit provides more flexibility, the down side to it is you have to use it in one go.
Well, have to say it is a good move by AMEX with the change.

    • Not if you are flying from Perth or would wish to fly to Perth from the Eastern states, it’s about 1/3 of the value it used to provide.
On the old product, the old complimentary flights could be sold to someone intending to travel west for a lot more than $200 anyway.

      • the complimentary flight has its limited destinations, as far as I know, you cant use it for Mel - Perth flights, likewise I assume same for other eastern states.

  • A little OT, but does anyone know if I can refer people for other cards like this one when I only hold an Explorer? Or only for the Explorer?

Can't seem to find a link on the Amex site to do it, but just wanted to confirm.

    • Keep in mind you are not eligible for free first year based on TC 3

      • I am not looking to sign up for this one myself, I am asking about referring other people to sign up (eg. my wife).

  • If I want to do a balance transfer and I use the card to do additional purchase, how about the interest?

    • You will be charged interest on purchases.

  • +1

It looks like by using the referral link you receive 15,000 points (rather than the usual 5k).

I applied yesterday before this new referral deal was in place. :(

Does anyone have any experience with contacting AMEX and retro-actively getting these bonuses applied? It's not a huge loss, but free points are free points!

  • Hey guys, I need your advice

I need some cash for a couple months.

Amex gives 0% p.a. on balance transfers for the first 12 months
Is it possible to get a credit card from ANZ/Westpack/NAB/etc, get cash from this card and then transfer money from AMEX - to close a balance in the ANZ/Westpack/NAB/etc and have 0% p.a. on balance transfers for the first 12 months ? Or I understood wrong this statement ?

    • No. Had same question before. Asked amex, all cards issued after 200x won't have this function anymore.

      • Thanks for your replay
At this case what is the balance transfers ?
I thought it is transfers from one card to another one

        • Yes, that is a balance transfer, not sure what hongd is referring to.

  • I currently have this card but I'm considering closing it down now that the free flight is gone. Some of the posters have indicated that Amex Platinum Edge is worth keeping because of the earnings at supermarkets and petrol (3/$1) but I already have Diamond Awards Amex through the bank which should give me the same points accumulation. Is there any point in keeping the Platinum Edge ?

    • +1

You should check the points conversion on that diamond card as although they say you earn 3 points per dollar, I suspect they only transfer into frequent flyer programs at a much lower ratio.
Platinum edge is worth keeping because of the amex offers throughout the year and the shop small in November which gets you at least another $100 back.

  • If I have a different card with them would I still be eligible for this?

    • +1

Possibly, others have received bonus points when applying but not guaranteed.

  • Does anyone know when the travel credit will be ready for use once I have activated my card today?

    • I think it's after the first statement where you pay your annual fee.

      • In this case, annual fee is $0 right? Are there any terms on the $200 credit? Like does it have to be used for flights >3 months or something? Thanks heaps!

        • I'm not sure because I went through the deal which did have an annual fee but the fee was "cashbacked".

You should read the T's and C's carefully. I haven't yet but the biggest one would be that you have to use the $200 all in one transaction.

If you make a transaction under $200, you forfeit the remaining credit.

        • @Hogg: Thanks :)

  • Just wondering, there are people selling travel credit to other people, is this possible?

    • They will make the travel booking on the buyers behalf and in the buyers name.

  • "Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any other Consumer Credit Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer. "

Does anyone know if this is actually being checked and enforced?

    • Possible to get the bonus, see comments above and in previous offer.

  • First time commenter here,

Just wondering if I get this card then can I step it back to the essential tier and keep my points? Or would I have to cancel the card clear my points and start again?

    Thanks

    • Essential is not a tier, it is a separate card altogether. Both cards earn Membership Rewards points but at different rates so cannot link together.

      • Ah so I do have to use up all the points and start again then….

        • +1

Yes, but you just transfer out to hotel or airline loyalty programs before closing card.
