Free AFL Live Pass 2017 - Telstra Customers (Postpaid or Prepaid with $30+ Recharge)

2040

Hi guys,

I discovered today after updating the AFL Live app on my iPhone that the Telstra Live Pass is here to stay through the 2017 season! You simply log in with your Telstra ID and it is activated with no extra costs. That's a total saving of $89!

To redeem this deal you need to be a Telstra PostPaid mobile customer or you can be a PrePaid customer but you need to maintain a $30+ recharge. The data is unmetered while you are on the Telstra Mobile Network and Telstra Home Broadband connections.

(I assume Telstra will post a formal link about it later this week and I will update the post when it becomes available)

I got an email saying my subscription was going to expire today (I had the Telstra offer last season).

Hopefully after today it'll continue working.

    • +6

Can also just join CrownBet for free and get Live streaming for AFL, NRL and a few other sports.

      • +2

is it the same (crappy) quality as the Tesltra apps? (ie designed for phones, not tablets/tv's)

        • +1

Yes. It's crappy because of legal reasons.

        • +3

@joeflacco: it's not legal reasons it's Telstra reasons. They want people to subscribe to Foxtel

        • @joeflacco: Thanks! amybe one day they'll sell directly to the supporters so we can decide how we want to watch it. Oh well Livestream Brasil seem to get 5 or 6 matches in at least SD quality

        • +5

@borgsta: No, it's actual legal reasons. It's in the broadcasting rights.

        • @supabrudda:

head to r/AFL - they usually get a decent stream from "AFLDUDE"

        • @Filthy-Frankfurt:
Didnt that get shut down last year?

        • @btiltman:

It did however theres some Acestreams and others that were posted in it's place. Have it on good authority that he'll be back this year

      • Can also just join CrownBet

Thanks… If you join the Rewards program, you get $50 free to spend pretty much anywhere at Crown including the bars and restaurants…

    • +16

Awesome, I cancelled mine when I got the email saying I would be charged. :(

      • +2

        Cancelled mine as well …

        • +3

Any ideas how to get ours uncancelled? I logged in and it says status is CANCELLED…

        • @irishjoe: Try in the new iOS app and log in that way. Android may have been updated but I'm unable to confirm.

        • @irishjoe:
Yep same… Let me know once you find out!

        • +1

          @Jstar1:
Used my android phone to login and it's saying I have the weekly sub now.
When I log in via a web browser on a PC, it still says cancelled… Hmm.

I'll check again tomorrow once my original weekly sub ends.

        • @Athomas:

Updated my app, now says purchased on 31/1/2017 and active till 28/2/2017 lol, but looks like progress / should roll over at that time or next month I assumr.

        • removed

        • +1

@irishjoe: Android app gives you the option to sign up for free as a telstra customer now.

      • +1

        same here

      • +1

        me too, for f sake.

      • +1

@irishjoe - I did exactly the same thing when I found it in my junk mail today

        • +1

man whoever set up the automation on their email marketing is going to be torn to shreds.

i did a similar stuff up and got 1,273 cancelled memberships after the email went out from a program I managed. Sucks to be that guy/girl

      • +1

Confirmed you can re-subscribe free of charge. Got the email about being charged too, cancelled the second I saw it.

Just updated the AFL app and logged in, successfully subscribed again.

  • worked
I never got an email to cancel mine

  • +1

I just posted in the Crowd Support forum asking that if we cancelled after seeing that email that said we would now be charged whether we will still be eligible for a free pass for 2017.

    • Could you rephrase that? I don't understand what you said.

      • +2

confirmed no costy costy on pass..checked with mr interwebs

  • I just logged in and immediately got the email saying "You do not need to cancel or update your subscription, and you will not be charged as the 2017 AFL and NRL Live Passes are included for all Telstra mobile customers as part of your plan, or when you maintain a $30+ recharge."

So just login and it refreshes it

  • -2

This might make me a traitor but i totally forgot about AFL.

    • Cool story bro.

  • I wonder if this works with Boost prepaid sim, as they use Telstra network?

    • Definitely not

    • +1

It worked for me last year, I was with telechoice…

      • Just tried it with my Boost prepaid, didn't work :(

  • Is that $30 recharge per month?

    • +1

Probs means that you can't let your credit expire/recharge less than $30.

      • +1

        I disagree. See below.

Also, you can maintain a recharge credit balance of $30 or more without spending any money. I think Telstra's intention is to entice people to spend at least $30 per month to receive this offer.

        • Yeah I want it to be just maintain the balance, but I think its spend $30 a month.

I have a dual SIM but main account with Optus and could just load up on a second pre-paid with Telstra.

    • +1

Good question. I think it'd be a $30 recharge per "month". The current flagship prepaid offer is Pre Paid Plus which when recharging $30 or more doesn't come with any recharge credit. So I disagree with ilikeradiohead.

      • +1

I guess when the T&Cs come out we'll know for sure.

  • In Android when I update the App and log into AFL Livepass (now called AFL Live Official App) it's still showing the sub that expired in January. How do I make update to the new season?? Anyone .. ??

    • Look for Telstra customers option and turn your wifi off and be logged onto Telstra 3/4G

  • Telstra have a $30 "Long Life" prepaid which lasts for 6 months. Wait until day 1 of the AFL season and activate that SIM; it should cover you for everything but the Grand Final (and maybe a prelim).

Does anyone know of any current offers for a discounted $30 SIM pack? Either way, it beats full price.

  • Is it possible to give someone your login, or can you only use it while on a telstra sim?

    • +1

Possible to give out the log in. You can log in to tablets or phones without SIMs. You can also stream it over a non-Telstra data service.

    • +1

Even after I logged in with my Telstra ID, they required me to turn WiFi off to verify that I was using a Telstra prepaid SIM.

    • +1

      Yes

    • +1

Short answer is yes, you can give someone your login.
Previously, I've logged into my Telstra account on the AFL app on my ipad to watch over wifi without any issues.

      • +1

Edit: wow, I'm so slow at replying. FYI, my account is Telstra post-paid, not pre-paid. Not sure if this makes a difference.

  • Awesome - sounds like this year you can get BOTH AFL and NRL passes, instead of choosing only one. :-D

    • You could get both last year too.

      • Damn, missed out then. :-(

Edit: T&Cs last year mentioned "AFL or NRL pass". Must've missed something…

        • you just had to text a different code #820# for AFL or #821# for NRl I think.

  • +1

AFL app (Android) just updated through Google Play and there is a button to touch that activates the free pass for this year.

  • +1

The new app detects root and will not run!
Rootcloak Xposed module does nothing to hide it either.
    :-(

EDIT - removing Native Root Detection did the trick..

    • How did u do this?

Edit: never mind, can see u used xposed

    • How do you disable root in CM13 to rum this?

  • Also note video usage is unmetered.

Standard data charges apply when downloading or using the app. Video data usage is currently unmetered only for certain Telstra customers in respect of supported devices.
Video data usage is only unmetered for the following Telstra services:
    - BigPond ADSL/Cable/NBN
    - Telstra mobile handsets / tablets with any Telstra SIM (excluding International Roaming)

    Telstra services excluded from unmetering:
    - Mobile Broadband (Dongles and mobile WIFI hotspots)
    - Telstra Business Broadband
    - BigPond Internet (Dial Up/ Satellite/ Hourly Plans)
    - Telstra Air

Note: the difference is between the device the SIM is in (mobile/tablet vs hotspot) and not the offer the SIM is on (mobile vs mobile broadband offer/plan).

    FAQ

  • Hypothetically speaking of course, if you had a friend that had a telstra account but wasn't interested in the AFL, would you just be able to use their details to get the free pass despite being with another network?

    • Yes.

    • +2

      Yep.
You wouldn't have unmetered data for streaming on your non-Telstra SIM or ADSL connection, but you'd get access to the content.

  • I had the NRL pass free for 12 months last year on my post paid account. when I click on the app to login it says no subscription found. is it supposed to be free this year too?

  • +1

Gah rooted, gotta mess around now to fix it. Anyone know a quick and easy fix?

    • Yes would also like to know this.

    • It's mentioned above that removing Native Root Detection fixes it. My understanding is that this involves editing the APK with a text editor, so it's not a quick and easy fix.

In the meantime I just disabled/hid Superuser in SuperSU settings, rebooted, and it works fine. Obviously this disables root until you enable Superuser in SuperSU settings again. I'll look at other solutions later but for now this is easy and sufficient.

      • +1

It was a bit easier than that.. as below.

      • Thanks for replying, I tried it (Settings> Enable superuser> uncheck) but AFL still detects root on my phone :/

I'm using SuperSU Free 2.79 by Chainfire btw- came preinstalled when I installed CM13 onto my Xiaomi Redmi Note 3.

      • What do you do when it says root detected, but it's not rooted? Pipo tablet..Worked fine last year?

    • +1

I used the remove native Root Detection feature of the Rootcloak module for Xposed.

      • I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to installing software onto phones- but managed to install CM13 onto my Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 by using a guide.

Is the process of using Xposed as complicated?, have never used Xposed before.

        Thanks

        • You have to flash a zip file in recovery.
          So pretty easy.

Once installed, it's easy to add/remove modules with the Xposed App.

      • Thanks for the tip scubacoles, I had the latest Stable release of Rootcload which doesn't have NAtive Root Detection, but I changed my Xposed preferences to get the Beta release and it works well, cheers.

        • Just an update on this.
I updated to Android 7, no Xposed support, and Magisk Hide didn't work for me.
I've subsequently discovered that the AFL plugin for Kodi allows you to login to your live account on a rooted device AND on PC. Video quality is half decent on my TV too!

  • It worked with my Telstra prepaid data sim on a legacy $50/year plan, last time I recharged it was in August last year.

    • Can you access premium content now?

      • +1

Yes. I had to put the Sim card in the phone to activate, logging in with telstra ID didn't work for some reason.

  • Weird. I unsubscribed when I got the notification, have since gone re-register and it says I am already subscribed.

  • On iOS I deleted the old app and downloaded the new app, it let me resubscribe. I had unsubscribed on Sunday thinking I was going to be up for charges.

  • Was waiting for this, my NRL one still says it expires 31/1/17.
I am on Telstra prepaid now, but last year signed up with a Telechoice number. Wonder if they will still work this year?

  • Hmm got it working on the phone but not on the iPad by logging in Telstra id?

  • Yay a free service I'll never use because watching sport on a 5.7 inch screen is … pointless.

    • It's handy to log on and then cast it to a TV. That's what I do. It's cheaper than Foxtel and all games live.
Note: This activity is typically blocked by the apps but of course there are ways around it.

      • Xposed to the rescue again?

        • Well Jailbreak for me.

    • +1

      ^Bitter Optus subscriber?

I used it in the shed where there's no TV..

I didn't watch very much, but commentary was fine and I'd catch the highlights in replay.
Plus it works on any Android device logged into an active account, not just your phone.
So I run it on my Android TV box (to watch matches that aren't on FTA, especially cool when on holiday) - resolution isn't amazing, but OK for free - and Tablet - upgrade to 8" screen!

  • spew i don have telstra mobile but i have the damn home entertainemnt broad bundle. wish i could get it on that

  • This deal is legit.

Regarding the email Telatra sent which said the "trial voucher period is drawing to a close and will end on 31/01/2017" (which I also received), I got this follow up email from Telstra yesterday:

"You may have received an email on Saturday about your 2016 AFL Live Pass subscription.

This email was sent to you in error, and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.

You do not need to cancel or update your subscription, and you will not be charged, as the 2017 AFL Live Pass is included for all Telstra mobile customers as part of your mobile plan, or when you maintain a $30+ recharge.

We will send you more information about the 2017 Telstra Live Pass very soon."

  • Cool. Are there any other Telstra free streaming data apps we should know about? I got a free Netflix sub with my new phone, but it's useless to me as I have to pay for my data :(

  • I just updated the app and logged back in. I'm not a Telstra mobile customer (I got a subscription code from a friend last season).

When I go into the app, press the 'live pass' bit in the top right corner and then click on 'AFL Live Pass Subscription', it says under 'plan details':
    Subscribed to: AFL_WEEKLY
    Status: ACTIVE
    Purchased on: -
    Expires on: 31/01/2017
    Current method: SDF

Is this what everyone else is seeing?
I'm able to watch replays of last year's game with no problems.

  • FYI - The 2016 expiry email went out as a mistake.

AFL/NRL and Netball will all be unmetered for Telstra customers on mobile this year too!

  • Under the terms and conditions on the afl website.

Post-paid customers who remain on an eligible post-paid plan can keep watching until 31 Jan 2018.

Pre-paid customers can keep watching until 31 Jan 2018 or 60 days from your last $30+ recharge, whichever is earlier. You must continue to recharge at least $30 on a Telstra Pre-Paid offer in order to continue accessing the Season Pass until 31 Jan 2018.

    http://m.afl.com.au/mobile/terms.mobileapp

  • I have activated the pass with my telstra phone.
Does anyone know if I can buy a "Casual SIM Only" $5/month 100mb month to month plan for my ipad from telstra and then stream unmetered from the telstra mobile network? As I have already activated the pass for the year via a postpaid phone, I assume I would not need to have a $30 balance on the separate ipad sim??
I would only use the sim to watch footy through the AFL app, so 100mb is fine for me. I would cancel after the season. So ~$30 for the season to stream over 4g?

    • +1

Should be fine, just log into the app using your AFL Live account that you associated to your Phone Number.
Similarly you can watch over WiFi… You don't HAVE to watch over Telstra Network.

  • Godness 200 comments, If I repeat anything forgive me!

I got the email then the 2nd saying it would all be ok!

Got in last year to App on phone and iPad
Telstra business customer through work so not really my account.
Managed to get phone registered but not iPad, tried help forum and our Business consultant (who said it might not work)

Trouble is new job in two weeks and I think new company is on Optus, might have to pay $89…..

  • It took two weeks but the App is finally letting me log in with my Telstra Id and today it updated my sub to the 2018 season at no cost. So well done Big T, better late than never AND before the season started … :-) .. !!

ps .. I'm actually using an account which piggy backs on my daughters Telstra post paid mobile (she didn't want the LivePass), I can't afford a Telstra mobile acc .. I use Telechoice which gets me Telstra 4G at a discount …. confession is good for the soul .. :-) .. !!
