Hmm wonder if I can combine this with Audi Corporate Program through work… could work out well.. thanks OP

    • +1

usualy wont work, either you get retail discount or corporate discount

      • oh yes, not so much pricing, happy to only go with one set of discounts, thinking more along the lines of if the retail pricing promo can be merged with other corporate plan benefits like ext warranty, free service etc. Had managed to do that with another luxe brand after finding a rep for that brand here on ozbargain hehe :) any Audi Artarmon sales reps here?

        • definitely can combine with the audi Corporate Program if you are purchasing a new car, trick is not to mention it until you have settled on a price

        • @turk182:

          Confirmed yes from previous encounters.

The "negotiated" pricing is always better than the corporate "discount".

The dealer I went to did an "open book" deal with me where he flipped the screen showing the "cost" of the all vehicles and sold it to me at that price.

No one knows what sort of manufacturer rebate goes back to them.

Unaware of anyone paying "RRP" for a car aside from rare circumstances, such as the A45 when it was launched… 15% discount from RRP should be the starting point…

          So down voting this deal…

        • @googleyahoo69: Imagine someone wasting his energy negotiating a deal at some x Audi dealer without this little bit of info.

Given the information is utter rubbish, yes I can. If you want to know what sort of discount you can get you go to an Audi forum (or one specific to the brand you are buying) and research there. For a VW sites like vwwatercooled and vwgolf.net.au are places to look at. 15% discount from RRP as a starting point is utter rubbish especially with the models that are in high demand and the lower end models.

        • I bought my car from Audi Artarmon - negotiated myself a good deal and got the benefits of the corporate plan as well. :)

  • whats the rrp of audi demo's ?

      20% off

  • +1

    30% is the target

    • wtf serious?? their margin is that high??

      lexus was only 12%

      • wtf serious?? their margin is that high??

No it's nowhere near that high, closer to your Lexus figure but on the lower side.

        • so hes just bullshitting the 30% figure?

a friend of mine bought a Audi Q7 optioned to $125k for only $105k

          thats roughly 15-16%

        • -1

Bullshit. Look at OS prices. On higher end models the mark up is over 100%. Who takes that markup is a different story, usually the importer (who just happens to be Audi).

You can't compare Australian prices with places like the USA. The cost of doing business in Australia is a lot higher, sales are less, the right hand drive market is a lot smaller, local requirements means more customisations (removing isofix mounts from front passanger seat, removing airbag switch for passanger airbag and so on), taxes are higher, there is the luxury car tax and so on and so forth. As you're taking about the manufacturer there are development costs, research, shipping and so forth which have to factored in.

This discussion is about dealer margins, getting 10% of an Audi under 100k is a good deal and anything else is a bonus.

        • +2

@Maverick-au: don't drink the cool aid. The UK is a RHD market just like ours and the costs are up to 100% less on high end cars. The reason why car prices are high in Australia is that it is a monopoly for each brand. Cars can only be imported legally by the official importer, and those official importers just happen to be the car companies. They sell the cars to the dealers at substantial make ups. There is no reason for it other than the fact that the market can sustain it in their eyes. Tax and logistical fees only represent a small portion of the total cost. Case in point. A Mercedes S350 retails here for about $250k on the road. You can get the same car in New Zealand for $130k. Same rules, higher import cost to NZ, smaller market.

If you are only getting 10% off, you definitely are not trying hard enough. 20% is the target.

        • @thorton82:
you realise there is a luxury car tax right?

        • -1

@murphy84: why reply when you didnt even bother to read my posts?

        • @thorton82:

Yes agree that we do have the "Australia tax" on cars as well as many things e.g Apple products, software, etc…we do typically have higher spec cars

Cars are the only thing that has a luxury tax applied….in saying that a few toyotas fit into that category being over $64k…landcrusiers, tarago (both not very luxury)…the thereholds needs to be increase….more C classes are sold than your average camry or commodore.

The S350 you mention….the LCT is nearly 40k then you have gst then stamp duties…the other thing is that NZ hasnt had a car industry to protect like we have…hopefully our govt will change its thinking now that the local car makers are finishing up….the discount level varies between each model….good luck getting a big discount on an AMG or RS/S model

        • @kirk7: So if LCT is 40%, what about the other $110k? Straight into Mercedes pocket. The only car manufactures that don't price gouge in Australia are VW, Fiat Chrysler Jeep and Tesla. In the UK a Grand Cherokee is within a whisker of a Range Rover Sport in terms of price. Here it's less than half the price across the range.

        • @thorton82: it actually astounds me that people feel the need to defend the unscrupulous actions of the automotive industry in Australia, when unequivocally the public is getting ripped off on luxury cars (the low end of the market is very reasonable however). When I get negged for presenting facts, and people who make up excuses for other people getting ripped off get upvoted, you know the problem will never be solved as the public unexplicably seem to feel getting ripped off is ok, and will defend the rights of companies that rip them off. It seems that the idea that paying more for the same product gets a better product is part of the Australian shopper's psyche generally, but I thought that ozbargain was the place where people see through the BS Australia tax and see a rip off for what it is.

I do wonder the reliability of Audi's - esp that most of them are made in Europe (you know what I mean ;)

  • Q2 released yet?

  • They are pretty good overall.
They tend to have problems with the first generation of each model if anything.

Only one I would avoid like the plague is the Q5. The first batch of the petrol A5's were terrible too- but they've fixed them up.

With all other models, as long as they are serviced properly then they are usually good.
If you're looking at a used diesel model then be very, very careful and check that all servicing is done and that the owner was diligent with services.

How do I know? I used to work for the company that provides extended warranties for Audi (Swann Insurance).
I would personally buy one without worry.

    • So would you say extended warranty is generally unnecessary?

      • +1

if you are going to keep it more than 3 years then yes, 100% purchase an extended warranty.
The Swann warranty in particular was excellent, everything was covered, and as far as re-sale value added with the appeal of purchasing a 4 or 5 year old Audi with 2 years warranty left you'll get a better price for sure.

  • So what's wrong with the Q5….Diesel or petrol?

    • Getting old.

    • new model out later this year

    • I had a Q5 with many problems. But the biggest and most expensive problem was the diesel particulate filter. It gets clogged regardless how hard I drive it and costs $2000 to clean.

  • 15% off isn't an amazing deal, your target on Euro cars should be 20%.

    • +1

When you say Euro cars, are you referring to Skoda? I am 0% on porsche macan, not to mention 7 months waiting period

      • True, Porsche don't do much discounting here, but buy a Porsche in Australia is a fools game, they are the biggest price gougers of all the Euros. When a Macan turbo at $150k costs $50k more than it's liked priced (overseas) competition, you know they are parting fools and their money. An SQ5 which shares a chassis and is 9.9/10ths everything a Macan Turbo is, goes for $100k and is still too expensive here. People are paying though the nose for a badge, because of an artificially created environment. Porsche limit the number of cars they import here on purpose and because the government has allowed a monopoly to exist, and only Porsche can import Porsches, thanks to the laws of supply and demand, they can raise and raise the prices and people will pay. No doubt they are fine cars, but hey aren't worth anything like what you pay for them in Australia.

        • +1

I think you miss my point - not sure if you can classify everything under euros and say that you can get 20%

But to your point, yes it will be great if it was cheaper but personally also okay with earning more in Australia and paying more for it as well. I mean almost everything in Australia is expensive, comparatively speaking. And Of course people pay more for the badge or for the brand, again like everything else in life

        • @superbass: oh so you think I was making a generalisation? What ever gave you that idea? 20% as a rule of thumb is generally the target, but that obviously won't apply to new models, and some high demand models. For the most part though, 20% stands.

    • absolutely untrue. 20k off a 100K mercedes? Maybe on a demo in some ugly colour with a boatload of holdback involved.

      • My old man got his last E class at more than 20% off. With options RRP was about $135K. He got it for under $100K, brand new, in black. Was the current model at the time. GLE can be had for serious discounts, and BMW X5? Just go read the thread and prices on whirlpool. 100% true.

        • +1

In our fam we got the MB ML350 in white and BMW 135i in black both for around 20% off. Granted you have to work for it - not every dealer does this and these prices aren't handed to you on a platter.
