60

Bought some new headphones for PC gaming after finding my Philips Fidelio X2 annoyingly uncomfortable to wear. You will require an amp to get these to work properly!

Note that the eBay item is in Hong Kong and they're giving me a shiiping ETA of Feb 17-22. If you want it faster DWI web store has the same item for 289 delivered shipped from within Australia. http://www.dwidigitalcameras.com.au/astore/AKG-K712-PRO-Over…

Price is $269 at eGlobal https://www.eglobaldigitalcameras.com.au/akg-k712-pro-over-e… but after adding delivery to Adelaide metro it cost more but you're mileage may vary depending on your location.

The AKG K712 PRO Headphones Black for precise listening, mixing and mastering. The over-ear design guarantees maximum wearing comfort for fatigue-free mixing and mastering, while providing spacious and airy sound without any compromise. Their precise powerful sound results from improved low-end performance by 3dB.

These headphones have a genuine soft leather headband for a lightweight and comfortable fit. Their carefully selected transducers provide consistency and accurate localization. The K712 PROs come with a professional mini XLR connector for quick replacement of the cable. Also included is an additional coiled cable and a premium carrying bag.

They have a two-layer diaphragm with a flat-wire voice coil that was designed by AKG to provide an accurate high end response. The genuine leather headband and velour earpads allow for comfort during extended listening periods. The K712 Pro headphones are built in Austria (I copied this from DWI description … they used to be made in Austria but now they make them in Slovakia. Apparently it makes a difference to audiophiles who can hear what nationality the headphone was constructed in obviously!)

  • I think the been they price for a while. I've had apair sitting in my cart waiting for a sale.

    • Well it's a 4 dollar saving i think from memory from the price already posted here.

      • What amp do you use?

  • +1

There was a 5% off sale on Australia day on DWI which applied for these headphones
And you might considering pay that little extra for the HD600

    Just saying

  • Why do you need an amp?

    • +1

Well basically to get the most out of the headphones you have just bought, you need an amplifier to power them so that the sound is not distorted when you crank up the volume.
Not all headphones need an external amp. Most low end headphones will do fine with the on-board sound from a motherboard.
However if you spend money on such headphones as in this deal above, then you may consider getting an amplifier.
Its very difficult to explain how much better the sound is. This is something everyone should experience on their own.
Personally for me going from crappy headphones with on-board motherboard sound to same on-board motherboard sound with good headphones to finally good headphones with a good DAC and Amp has literally changed the way I listen to music.
I cannot stand listening to music without my Amp and good headphones.

This AKGs are a good start.

      • So these are decent headphones, but let me get this straight, they can't really be used with home TVs? Any suggestions for an amp? And why not just get a decent set of speakers then?

        • +3

          yes these are descent headphones.
you certainly can use them as they are, be it with your iPhone, MP3 player or with your TV. Totally fine. But you would benefit from them more if you get an amp as well.

I'm not good at explaining this as good as some people on the internet.
Basically if you google "why do i need an amp" you will get a lot of different opinions of why people use them.
Here is a good example: https://www.headphone.com/pages/why-do-i-need-a-headphone-am…

I personally use a JDS Labs ODAC+AMP combo. Very good for how much they cost. But you can get cheaper ones too.
What I suggest is do some research on this topic. Find out what a DAC (Digital to Analog converter) does. Find out why high impedance headphones need an amp, and so on. I honestly was a newbe when I first started looking for audio equipment, and still am, but I found out all these by just doing some research. There are a lot more knowledgeable people on the internet that can help you.

But in the end just get something and go from there. That's what I did. I jumped off the cliff so to speak :)

They are great headphones, in the mid-fi level of greatness. Headphones can be put into ~5 levels of kickassery: Garbage, Low-fi, Mid-fi, High-fi, and Summit-fi (which refers to headphones that generally cost upwards of $1000). Most people never have anything other than low-fi headphones… even most Bose and Beats headphones are not that great and vastly overpriced for the audio quality. The difference between low and mid is significant, but most people have neither the need nor the money to get into high-fi phones.

If you have never used anything other than what came with your iPhone or Beats or something like that, you will likely have your mind blown when trying legitimately good headphones with an amp.

The amp does two things: increase quantity (volume) and quality of the sound. Most headphones will get loud enough when connected to a phone or laptop, but they will not sound nearly as nice as they can when sufficiently powered using an amp. Some simply need more power than a phone can deliver and so you will only get a low volume on those cans.

There are two things to consider when looking at headphone power requirements: electrical impedance (aka resistance, measured in ohms) and sensitivity (not sure how this is measured). IIRC, most AKGs in the K6xx to K7xx range are low-impedance headphones, but not very sensitive. Therefore they need a more-difficult-to-provide level of power at an easier-to-provide impedance. Others, like Sennheiser HD600s (generally similar to these phones) are pretty sensitive, but have a high impedance. Both headphones really do require an amp to hear what they are capable of.

Both these cans will be usable with just an iPhone or whatever, but when you connect them to a proper amp that can really spit out the juice, they will shine. As the amp quality is increased, both phones will sound better and better. They scale with the amp to very high levels, and without an amp, you simply will not hear them at their best. The better your headphones are, generally, the sillier it is to not have a similarly high quality amp. If you have $1000 phones with no amp, you would have been better off just spending $150 on headphones, because they can sound just as nice un-amped as the $1000 pair (there are exceptions and this is a dangerously vast generalization, but you get the idea).

Even some cheap headphones can get a significant boost in quality and fidelity with an amp.

          Back to your question:
The AKG K712 is a headphone that really should be paired with an amp. It WILL work with your TV, I'm sure, and it will probably sound great, but if you won't be getting an amp, it is probably in your best interest financially to get cheaper phones that are easier to drive. A great amp is the Objective2 - it is an open-source design produced by a number of companies. Store DJ (brick and mortar audio shop with several locations across Oz) stocks a version by Mayflower that has a battery so it can be used on the road, on sale at $40 off for $179. To be honest, that's still a bit more pricy than it could be, but Mayflower is an excellent small company with excellent customer support.

There are much cheaper options out there, such as the Fiio lines and Bravo Audio v2 hybrid tube amp (tube amps tend to add character to the sound, whereas solid state/digital amps only increase the volume. both amps increase power and get more out of headphones, but tube amps usually at some euphonic harmonics to the sound). I'm no pro at this, check head-fi.org or reddit.com/r/headphones to learn more.

Why not get a decent set of speakers? Yes. You can generally get better sound out of $100 of speakers than you can out of $100 of headphones. I think you can imagine why headphones are desirable, though… privacy, portability, intimacy of sound, and consistent performance. I prefer to listen to music with headphones. I like to close my eyes and get lost in the music, something that is harder for me to do with speakers. Also, on the other side of my wall is another family, so I can't really bump wu tang (or mozart, or chick corea, or mingus) at 2am with speakers.

I'd avoid DWI if you can. I bought a phone through them which burnt while charing and they don't honour the warranty despite being only 6 months old.

  • Cheaper on eGlobal website, $280 delivered with WELCOME code. Slightly up from previous $273 deal

Edit $279.93 with this new code

  • Slightly OT but I need some feedback from those in the know:

Re wireless headphones for TV/Xbox use, I was hoping to get something for under $100 as they wouldn't be used for high fidelity input or very frequent operation. Whirlpool had a few glowing reviews for the AKG K912s, now discontinued but still available online at the price I want to pay. Thoughts on these or recommendation for something else?

  • How were the X2s uncomfortable? Can you go into more detail? Was the band not long enough? Cups got too warm? Not wide enough for your ears? Was considering a pair of those myself but if they're uncomfortable I need to know why.
