you'd be an idiot to get this instead of that phone if you're an ozbargainer who is semi competent with clicking one program

don't even need to unlock bootloader to flash on the official rom, just need to follow a few steps and click flash on a program you download. this is literally the easiest phone to flash

it also costs only $240 for Xiaomi RN3 Special Edition (SE includes Band 28) delivered via DHL in few days, even less with ali 10% CR.

      • 5.7" vs 5.5"
      • Dual Sim vs Single Sim
      • Still has 4g AU bands including Band 28 on Note 3 Special Edition. Certain models of G4 Plus have no Band 28.
      • 3GB ram vs 2GB ram
      • 32GB ROM vs 16GB ROM
      • Manufactured in same country (China)
      • Terrible/barely existent warranty on both - Both will likely give you DOA support but not cover any warranty issues (most user generated), especially in 12M
      • Better cam (even though its already bad on the RN3!)
      • Better fingerprint reader
      • Snapdragon 652 vs Snapdragon 617 cpu (and gfx Adreno 530 vs 405)
      • 67k vs 45k antutu benchmark (gfx, cpu, ram)
      • IR blaster vs no IR blaster
      • 4000 maH vs 3000 maH battery
      • Same weight give or take few grams
      • Better design (Aluminium vs Plastic)
      • Most popular phone in certain countries (e.g. India), heavily tested
      • Huge developer support
      • Nougat being released on RN3 soon
      • $60-$70 cheaper

Conclusion, you're buying a vastly inferior China phone, but paying $60 more for the privilege. If you're an ozbargainer that has trouble connecting phone to computer and running 'Xiaomi Flash' tool, you should give up your OzB badge. Don't believe dumb hype about stock android, you can run a Google Now/Nova launcher or flash upcoming stable LineageOS and the phone would still run way better.

Saying its a local phone even though its manufactured in China is like.. >_>

Also saying a foreign branded phone is a local phone/supplier even though its manufactured in China/HK/Taiwan/Korea is like.. >_>

Just because they shipped 10000 here and slapped on B28 doesn't make it local. Cos the RN3 meets that criteria, lol.

      • +1

Thanks for writing this up. I have a RN3 SE and after using the average camera I considered getting a Moto because I thought the cam would be better. But Even if it was, the RN3 still shits over the Moto in everything else. Happy with my RN3

        • +1

Actually, my bad. The camera is indeed better on the Moto G4 Plus. More details and more vibrant colours. Better low light.

So the advantages of Moto G4 Plus

          • Stock Android
          • Better Cam
          • Better Charging

But you lose all of the above.

So up to you if you think those three things are worth it.

        • @takutox: The Moto G4 Plus also lacks Compass Sensor

      • Disagree. G4 Plus has local warranty, direct updates from google, better camera, true dual Sim 4g dual standby + seperate Sdcard slot. All this wins over Xiaomi redmi note 3 has the worst camera I have seen. Also its google integration is garbage even with right rom it doesn't even detect your location for google results properly for cards.

Compass isn't that important. If you are driving with GPS doesn't make any difference plus I have another phone for that. It's fingerprint sensor is faster and better than my S7 edge believe or not.

Quick charging shits over this slow charge on Xiaomi. You shouldn't buy a phone without quick charge.

G4 plus already Nougat official let's see when Xiaomi gets one.

Best budget out of box no tinkering required.

This is coming from someone flash, root/unroot, unlock bootloaders, S ON/Off, USB jigs, nandroiding, Xposed, etc what not since 2008. After a while you will get sick of it you just want something out of box that works. Try to do it with every phone you own close to ten years

It was all fun until you get the LG G4 bootloop crash and burn your money with grey imports then you realise local warranty is important if the price difference is minimal

        • +1

that's what I just said lol

personally id pick 4000 mah over quickcharge anyday. having to have your phone constantly connected to charger after a year sucks. this is coming from someone who has always bought QC phones. large battery capacity more than makes up for it.

camera not essential for a lot of people. nougat only important for nerds, marshmallow runs just fine.

dual sim version on G4 Plus costs even more (and if you want $300 its a grey import too)

widespread failure on one model of a phone is not really justification to avoid grey imports completely. and with certain phones the warranty might well as be as useless as a grey import (htc)

        • @takutox:

dual sim version on G4 Plus costs even more (and if you want $300 its a grey import too)

No it doesn't cost more, the one from The Good Guys for $298 is a dual sim model.

          https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/motorola-moto-g-4-plus---blac…

        • @chadiwrx:

my bad, it actually avoids and doesn't say anything about dual sim at all. you have to go into the reviews/Q&A to see its the dual sim version.

The dual sim version is also 4g + 3g, so not sure where you got true dual sim 4g dual standby. you can only use 3g on both sims or 4g/3g

        • @takutox: Where did I claim it to be true dual sim 4g?

  • so no odiea when it is starting (the deal ? )

  • +1

The current OW catalogue ends this Wednesday, so presumably this starts after that.

Note that since Marshmallow, the Moto G range can configure SD memory as internal memory, so you can beef it up all you like. My wife added 64GB.

    • +2

As storage should be, easy to add memory cards. So much better that Apple's nonsense.
Not to mention horrendous itunes sync not required.

  • +2

    Better than a Nexus 5X 16GB?

    • Would also like to know this. Or even if better than my current phone - Nexus 5.

    • The G4 Plus camera isn't as good (but not too bad either), especially in low light, and there's no NFC which means no payments. The battery life will be better than the 5X, and the sound louder and clearer, despite only having one speaker.

It really depends on your priorities.

      • I'm surprised the speaker on this is better than s7 doesn't make sense

        • The space available for the loudspeaker is bigger on the Motorola than the Samsung (which is right at the bottom). Plus, if you look on GSM Arena for reviews, you'll see that Motorola phones score consistently well on the loudspeaker volume tests. Even the Moto G 1st Get was very loud.

  • I'm not alone in having issues with this phone when using the SD card as internal and installing apps on it. Once I moved my apps to normal internal memory and just used my SD card for music this phone became the gem I thought it would be!

    • What kind of issues? I'm considering going from storage to internal so I have more space to install apps

      • +2

Reboots on first use in morning. Occasional failure to find SD card thus greying out apps installed on card. Seemed like waking and not having card instantly available caused a misread or some sort, with no apps on card there's no need for the system to try to read immediately and thus no problems. I had a speedy san disk 16GB in there which has been fine before and was reformatted for purpose. A power cycle always repaired the issue. There were enough instances of this on the web to make me try using card as external storage only and all my issues went away. Updated to Android 7 on the unit this weekend, so who knows, it may have been an Android 6 issue. YMMV

        • +1

Oddly enough when i upgraded to nougat it cleared up a whole bunch of internal storage - from 10GB (FULL) to about 6GB.

So I've put off reformatting SD to internal for the time being.

    Hello Guys,
I think this phone does not have proximity sensor. So during calls the screen won't go off.

    • I think it does, but no compass… The compass on my 5X is rarely accurate.

    • +3

Has a prox sensor, but no compass/magnetometer, gps still works fine and can detect direction

  • Bought the 3gb for mum for Christmas - fantastic phone for the price. Great deal yet again TA

  • +10

It is 2017. No 16GB Android phone is worth more than $200. In fact, all phone should start from 32G.

    • Realistically I think they could go better again and go 64Gb minimum.
I can't imagine the cost differences these days would be that much.

    • +1

Yeah, but… put in a fast 64GB SD card, problem solved.

  • +2

Usually the start date for Officeworks catalogs is on the second or third last page with a "printed for"

  • +3

Have had phone for six months as replacement for iPhone when changed jobs.

Plus - good screen quality and size, SD card slot, Android runs smoothly, fingerprint scanner, good camera and software for price, runs media and social apps perfectly.

Minus - lacks power for big apps (overheats and long loading times) , touch screen notably cheaper quality (I have big fingers). Battery not very reponsive when charging off USB port, takes forever.

Haven't felt ripped off at any stage of owning this phone, it does everything that's necessary, very well, then takes a pretty good stab at some high end features, shows how poor value premiums are now even when they are increasing the price.

  • +1

Nice phone but it does overheat so don't game on this too much. Recommend the 32gb version with 3GB ram. It's dual Sim function is top notch

It's finger print is better than S7

  • +1

This is the perfect budget phone. So much better than the Samsung S5 deals that get put up every two weeks for a 3 year old phone.

    • Genuine question - is it better than S5? I'm looking for replacement for my wife's old iPhone 4.

  • +3

I just picked up a Xiaomi Redmi Note and honestly I'd recommend it over this. It came with 64gb of storage and 3gb ram for $269. Better value IMO and I'm loving it so far.

    • +1

you got a link for that please?

  • +1

Where's JV? This will be the new "Everyday Price". ;)

  • +3

$298.00 price is now active on website

  • Xiaomi mi5 is way way way better by any lenghts. Imagine, snapdragon 820 for about 310aud at geekbuying or banggood. Just do the ems delivery so you won't wait for about 6 weeks. The 5.1 screen is simply perfect and it so rocket fast!

    • +1

      Doesn't do Telstra Band 28

      • Band 28 does not seem to be all that important as it is made out to be. Yes there might be specific scenarios where it might be useful but for the vast majority not really.

        • +1

Yeap, for me Band 28 is a must.

          In my house
          Without band 28
Voda - 1 bar, Telstra zero to 1 bar, Optus - no reception to zero bar

          with band 28
Telstra 1 bar to 2 bars, Optus - no reception to 1 bar

          3G
Voda - 1-2 bars, Telstra 1-3 bars, Optus no reception to 1 bar

        • +1

          [@edgar28](/comment/4461002/re

I found it useful when I was in country Victoria. My Telstra 4gx phone had minimal 4g reception when I had none on my iPhone 5

      • I get the full bar on aldi mobile at home using my mi5 so don't need band 28. Happy customer!

    • Xiaomi only issue is no warranty. No official after sales support, no band 28

Best thing about Motorola G4 plus. No bloatware, pure android fast updates on nougat already.

Also no other dual Sim phone that I know have seperate 2 x SIM card slots with third slot seperately for MicroSD. It even came with Nano Sim adapters…

    • Is the camera better on the mi5 then G4?

      • Yes definitely, after owning a G4 can now say that it was absolutely terrible, it looks good when you take it then when you look at it after and send it off it looks shocking.

  • +1

How is this phone compared to an old Samsung Galaxy S4, been looking for a phone to replace it.

    • +1

    • +4

      should be better?

My experience on Huawei Y6 elite
on paper it might be worse than S4, but real experience is that the Huawei Y6 elite performance way better than my S4
and the battery life is great vs S4

      • I will second that. In many ways my as new G2 is a bit faster and nicer to use than my cheap tethering workhorse Y6 Elite, but as the Huawei has B28 and is surprisingly snappy and even like the useful EMUI 3.1 O/S am mainly using this bargain of a phone. I live semi rural where B28 is also a must in order to get decent reception on Telstra and Optus, as well as the included 850mHz for Vodafone.

Liked it so much have got a few friends also using the Y6 Elite as well as getting a spare ( all for $99 less the $50 eftpos card super deals ( missed out on the Target $89 C & C deal haha )). Real world experience for this phone is decent. Still tempted to get the G4 Plus for the dual sim 4G-3G + S/D functionality.

  • Is this definitely a dual sim model, because I have asked in store before and they said it wasn't.

    • +1

Look at the bottom side of the box if it's a dual sim it will have two IMEI numbers

      • Thanks!

  • +1

    This or iPhone 7 ?
Using a iPhone 5s at the moment and need an upgrade. Thanks

  • I have an old LG G2 with a dying battery, and I want a cheap but good 4G phone. The G2 does have 4G hidden, I have to activate it via a hidden menu, but I don't think it has the "band 28" that Telstra uses. :(

I looked at this Moto 4G Plus, but it's basically on par (or slower) than my LG G2 - Snapdragon 800 (LG) vs Snapdragon 617 (Moto), both with 16Gb storage + 2Gb RAM. :( Seems like a lot of money just to get full 4G reception.

(I use Telstra and travel to the country a lot)

EDIT - Maybe an Oppo F1S?

    http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/oppo-f1s-32…

    3Gb RAM / 32GB storage… and supports Band 28?

    • Oppo only has HD, older Android version…

  • Wouldn't it be cheaper to get a higher ram and storage from ebay than through office work?

  • Hows compare to opppo f1s?

    • Actually, I'm genuinely interested to know what you (or anyone else) would recommend instead please.

I'm after a mid-range phone for my girlfriend. She's not a power user… doesn't play games or load up lots of apps… just a bit of email, texting, Facebook, calendar, and the like.

I thought this would be a great phone for her, but having read your comment, it sounds like there's a lot better to be found.

Around $300 would be nice for her budget. An $800+ flagship phone would be overkill. And yes, I know we can get cheaper, more powerful phones from overseas, but she'd rather pay local prices to avoid risks and issues with ROMs, warranties, etc.

She also uses Google Photo so 16 GB storage wouldn't be an issue, but obviously more would be better

      Thanks

      (PS. I didn't neg you)

      • Xiaomi Mi5 from aliexpress dreami store anyday mate, $300 and flagship parts.

        • +1

Thanks, hakkenaidos, but as I wrote, local suppliers only please.

And yes, I know we can get cheaper, more powerful phones from overseas, but she'd rather pay local prices to avoid risks and issues with ROMs, warranties, etc.

        • @surethang: really there isn't much risk, 1 in 1000 maybe have a problem, trust me warranties are pretty useless nowadays, companies always try and find a way around. Don't be so daft by avoiding grey imports, there really worth the value otherwise you're going to have to deal with being ripped off by "local stock" which really is just a name slabbed on a phone from china.

        • +2

          @hakkenaidos:

Thanks. But 1 in a 1,000? That's an incredibly enviable production failure rate for any electronic device.

I appreciate your optimism, but the reality is that phone failure rates are much higher. Anywhere from 2% to 40+% depending on the model and which study you believe.

          https://bgr.com/2016/05/11/android-vs-iphone-stability-study…
          https://www.squaretrade.com/cell-phone-comparison-study-nov-…

And of course Australian warranties are useful. Officeworks replaced my printer after 10 months with a new unit. And canon fixed my camera after stuck pixels lines started showing up - and it was just out of the warranty.

But yes there are plenty of horror stories for getting warranties honoured on OS-sourced phones. From my reading, you're looking at 2, maybe 3, months of warranty in reality, and even then you have to be highly assertive to get anything reasonable done.

      • -1

If I was in your position and could wait to buy a replacement phone:

I'd save up a few more months, wait for a new huge flagship to enter the market (Samsung S8 rumors are getting close to April) and watch current flagship models drop prices like hot potatoes.

I can understand and respect the fact you want a phone with brand recognition and not some generic asia phone, but I wouldn't shake off gray imports from reputable companies, you've then got the safety of buying an older model flagship build quality, at a much cheaper price than Australia stores can provide.

Spending the extra coins, get something hopefully with 4gb ram and a better GPU and it will last a good few years, that way your not replacing it in 12 months time when this thing starts hanging opening a recently updated game / facebook / 3 pages of chrome.

I wouldn't have even been upset if you did neg me tho - its just a convenient way of saying "I disagree with your opinion but I'm too lazy to type it".

        • +3

Thanks, Dazza. My girlfriend doesn't want to carry around a more expensive phone. The can break, get lost, stolen, etc… the usual risk/reward trade of. And she's got lots of other things that she wants to save up for. (Apparently shoes are absolutely critical; who knew! ;) Not everyone needs or wants a supercharged V8, when a nice 4 cylinder will get you to the shops in comfort.

You mentioned that the Samsung S7 will plummet in price when the S8 is introduced. The S7 currently retails for around $950, while the S6 is around $700. So if the S7 eventually drops to $700, that's still over double her budget. She'd could buy a phone like the G4 now and have $400 in the bank; more than enough to buy a another nice phone (hey, maybe an S7) in a few years time. Both phones combined would out last one S7.

Her current HTC phone is over 3.5 years old and runs the latest apps she uses fine. (Even my old 2013 2GB Nexus 5 still runs smooth a silk loaded with apps, games and multiple web pages.) If it wasn't for her sneaky toddler nephew dropping her phone, she wouldn't even be looking for a new one.

Again, I didn't neg you again :) I don't disagree with your approach - I just don't think that it applies to everyone

Thanks TA. Ordered. Taking a break from a Note 4 for a while. I have had to bitch slap it too many times. Craving some pure droid lurve…

  • hey guys,

my missus has a moto G (3rd gen) and hates the camera. Shes happy with the phone, but likes to snapchat and take selfies in clubs/outings (must be to embarrass me?).

Looking to upgrade to a sub $350 phone with a good front facing camera that can handle lower light pretty well. I'd stretch to $400 if the difference is notable.

She pretty much uses social media and reads recipes on websites, so not a power user and doesnt need a screen over ~5inches . She likes the simplicity of motorola too.

Recommendations? does this phone fit the bill?
(I'm fine with rooting etc if a xiaomi or similar is required, i run a mi5 on lineage atm).

    • No this camera sucks aswell had to deal with it for 6 months before I dropped it in water >.>, the Mi5 as you stated is probably the closest you'll get sub $350

    • Not sure if you can still download the Google Camera app as it is better than the default Motorola Camera app?

  • I have given up on china phones from gearbest bought a mlais mx base and touch screen went crazy after 6 months got a $18 part refund then last month bought a nubia z7 max and the dam screen on that is playing up , when i type a message it put 2-3 letter instead of one each time.

    • stop getting shit brands, get a xiaomi not cheap chinese $100 rubbish

      • The nubia z7 max was $150 should at least work.

  • Isn't this a better deal? https://www.eglobaldigitalcameras.com.au/motorola-moto-g4-pl… Just popped up in my browser price-watching plugin

Update 21/2: Also available at The Good Guys for the same price. Updated deal.

  • +1

I was wondering if this was the correct decision, and so just a heads up to everybody that the Moto G5 was recently leaked. Which explains the price drop.

Not to say the price is bad, but it will be superseded very soon. Some things about the G4 Plus irk me like the 5.5" screen size and lack of NFC.

    http://www.techradar.com/news/moto-g5-release-date-news-and-…

  • Now also available at The Good Guys Ebay store save 2% with Cashrewards.

  • why not get the Sony XA Ultra for $25 cheaper?

    • Link please.

  • +2

I successfully got them to price match Megabuy.

Walked away with the phone $253

  • If buying now, get it through TGG ebay (Couldnt find it in OW ebay store) as ebay has site wide 5% and CR 2.6%.
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Motorola-1031000206-Moto-G-4-…
Brings the phone price to ~ $275
