Damn good price, I've had mine since the Aliexpress sale in December and loving it so far.
Plays bay HEVC 4K content beautifully.

    • Have you played any games on this? I've got a controller that will work with Android. Would love to play things like Contest of Champions and Forged to Fight on my TV.

      • +1

I've heard it isn't good. The only thing holding me back from buying it really.

        • Yup. Just read some reviews. It's a shame, really. Good price. Would love to play quick games on the TV at home, or when I travel.

      • Youtube shows emulators work pretty well.

  • Has EU power pack I think the aliexpress came with AU power pack ?

  • What's the remote like on this? How many days would one expect to get?

    • +8

The remote is bluetooth-LE , with AAA batteries.
I think it is months rather than days.

Great remote, includes microphone for voice commands.

Don't compare this to any of the other cheap boxes on eBay. This is real "Android TV", like the Nvidia Shield, or Sony TVs.
Get HD Netlix and Youtube. 4K even.

      Its the software that matters.

Normal price is us$70 at Aliexpress, so this is only slightly cheaper. More cashback at Ali?

      • Note: the voice commands only search google's content. So you can't search netflix with it, etc

        • Works for me. I get results from Netflix, spotify, youtube, plex, SPMC (kodi), …

At the top, it will give a card with info about the movie or tv show requested, and some options to view it.
          Links for cast, related searches.
Google play comes first, but the others follow. Sometimes.

You can also use the voice search for Siri-type questions.

        • . dupe

        • @manic: Ah cheers, I'll try again

        • You definitely can search of only Netflix but the play store and Plex as well. It's pretty awesome, press the button and say "suits" and it will find it, show all the metadata, and have a Plex icon if it finds it in my library and a Netflix icon if it finds it on Netflix.

      • I have a new Sony TV and am interested in Kodi. I was also looking at the Minix boxes because I love to have something that is super fluid when scrolling around. Would this Xiaomi box be any better than what I have built into my TV?

        • +1

I got a Xiaomi MiBox with my LG TV and I have installed Kodi on my friend's Sony TV. They both have the same Android TV interface and I did not find any difference. Personally I don't think buying a MiBox would add any additional functionality. But that is my opinion, I may be wrong.

        • +3

Hey, no need to get one of these for Kodi if you have a new gen Sony TV running android. Just download the app from the app store, install plugins (exodus for example) and your set!

        • @BushRangerJones: Awesome guys, thanks. I was hoping for a faster silky smooth UI but that's just me being OCD. I am having issues (it appears some fonts are missing or something) but overall it does work very well (even over TV Wifi!).

        • +1

@domcc1: My partner uses KODI on a Sony Android TV without any issues… smooth as!

      • I have a Chinese Android TV box, and it has a very amateur launcher and interface. The settings menu is very similar to Android TV though. Just wondering why Chinese TV boxes don't use the Android TV and launcher. Is it not available free like Android for phones/tablets?

        • +1

Google retains tight control over Android TV. Vendors cannot just add their own shell and apps without approval.

Also, there will be extra setup costs, getting DRM approval form Netflix etc, …

    • Can confirm, the remote on this is superb. The only problem is being bluetooth I accidentally bump it on the couch and it restarts the movie I'm playing!

    • Think its rated at 6 months or so.

  • +1

    Either this or a Raspberry Pi 3 + Kodi…
Raspberry - need AC, Case, MicroSD, Remote, HDMI cable, Raspberry Pi 3 - should be under $88.10, and it will run RetroPi

    • +3

Pi is good for Kodi and retropi, but the Mi Box does HD netflix, youtube, and much more.

    • +5

I've got a RP3 and have not been very impressed with it as a media player. I'm considering upgrading to a proper android media player like this one that can decode x265.

      • Thanks, You've convinced me. Will get the Mi Box, however I am not sure about the AC Adapter (will read the comments)

    • AFAIK Raspberry Pi will struggle with HEVC:

"HEVC (H265) playback will bring RPi hardware to its knees. It cannot Hardware decode this compression standard.

Its relatively old hardware these days. RPi's do not even use the faster preferred eMMC Flash Storage and can only use micro SDHC cards."

      https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2610349#…

      • I've got a Pi2. It's played back all of the 720p hevc content I've tried- probably not super high bitrate- and struggled at 1080p. The Pi3 should be better. It might be old hardware but Kodi is heavily optimised by a large core of developers with support from the manufacturer. It wouldn't be my first choice now for a Kodi media player but it still has a lot going for it.

    • I have both and once I ran Kodi on the Mi Box, the Pi became RetroPi only :)

  • +1

I ordered 2. Bought 1 from the Aliexpress sale (~AU$100) in Dec and it has been great since.

    Thanks for posting.

  • What Kodi build are you using for on your MiBox?

  • Does this have a Plex app?

    • +2

You can add it from the Play Store.

  • +3

This is easily one of my most favourite pieces of equipment in the house. Highly recommended!

  • I have one which was bought in China, it was unstable sometimes, kept frozen or restarting, but most of the time it works fine.

1000+ tv channels for me at the moment.

    • Read the reviews, this is the International Version which works much better. This thing competes well with media centres 3x the price.

      • This version comes in a brown paper looking box. Even though it was an international model its a bit different than the one they have in america. And it DID have performance issues. Initially.

        • What's the difference between international and "non" international version?

        • @42: Apart from the same looking boxes xioami has used for previous iterations (they are a really really horrible company at distinguishing their products) not much. Heres the main difference. The android tv version was in initially launched in america to compete with the shield. The international version is merely this for other countries. Mine also lacks the sd card slot

    • How do you get a 1000+ TV channels ? Do they come installed on that thing? I use sometimes Zattoo to watch European TV … but 1000 channels …

      • +1

        Yeah,pre-installed app

    • Me too. Mine doesnt have a sd slot. I can 100% that it was initially a little buggy and the performance wasnt stellar, but after a few system updates it has been working fine

Unless you want 4K Netflix ;)

      • -2

Yes. Right In more, You get CPU : Octa Core Amlogic Android 6.0 and ROM : 16G GB

Beelink has Android for Phones/tablets while Xiaomi has Android TV for TV. Both have different purposes.

Beelink would be awesome for Android gaming and emulation. Android TV is perfect for services like 4K Netflix which the Beelink does not support.

      • Unless you want 4K Netflix ;)

or even 720p. Those other boxes only do 480-line.

        • Indeed. Very few Android devices are supported like WeTek.

        • I am having one. 1080p videos play without any issue. I haven't tested in 4k yet but will do it.

        • @PT1987: 1080p videos in general or 1080p Netflix?

        • @PT1987:

You're not reading what we are typing. We are referring to Netflix, it can only do SD.
Yes it can play back local 1080P and also 4K HEVC videos, but not from streaming services like Netflix or Amazon.

    • Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, no. Especially if you like things such as Netflix.
These random Android boxes are not capable of Netflix in HD. You want an Android TV device such as this, or a Wetek player, those that are officially approved by Netflix.

  • Got one at xmas with the Alixpress deal for $100 AUD shipped, FANTASTIC DEVICE!

EDIT: mine is now on kodi 17, running perfectly.

  • how does this compare to the MXQ Pro 4K?

  • Can it be shipped with a AU powersupply? Or will a adaptor be required?

  • Only drawback of this is that there is no way to get amazon 4k content. It is however extremely good value for what it does.

The competitors to this are the Roku 4 and the Shield and both of them do amazon prime video.

    • Plus one on the Roku

  • Can you install any APK on this device?

    • Yes but whether the application can run 100% with full functionality is another question. e.g. Chrome browser.

      • Ok thanks. Like I have a android tv box which I installed like Asian streaming apks etc. hope it works with this box

    • You will also need sideload launcher to be able to launch the apps

  • Does this fully replicate what a Chromecast can do?

Also, a potentially weird question, but does the international version also have Chinese language support?

    • +1

Chinese language is built into Android and if you need input you can use Google's own pin yin ime

And yes, it's a Google Cast capable device and it runs a Google TV OS.

  • This or Nvidia Shield?

    Worth the extra $200?

    • As a Shield owner, well I have two, yes, the Shield is worth the extra. I had a Nexus Player I put into a box once I got the Shield .
There are a myriad of reasons, for me having framerate switching is huge, as was an IR receiver and Ethernet. That said I use WiFi now, and you can get around the IR thing with a Flirc.
If a Shield is not in the budget, then the Mi Box is a great little device.

      • Thanks for the reply. At the moment I'm using my laptop hooked up to HDMI out ot the TV and an ethernet cable and a wireless keyboard w/mouse.

What are the advantages of a media box like this over my current set up?

What's the significance of framerate switching?

        • +12

If it was shot on film, or now days even most digital production, then it is shot in a framerate of 23.976. On Aus TV, this is sped up 4% for 25fps for a 50Hz broadcast, this leads to oddities include a higher pitch on all audio and some judder. For US (NTSC) they use something called 3:2 pull down for a 30fps (60Hz) transmission, this leads to judder, especially noticeable in panning scenes.
These devices will usually output at 60Hz, so you have a 23.976 source, being output at a non-native frame rate. It look ugly. Some people never notice it, some people, some people like Dr Pepper, some people think an 80s Mustang looks nice, some people like their steak well done, all of these people are broken.

I butchered pretty much all of what I typed. Frame rate switching is good, non-native frame rate is bad.

That is all assuming your TV switches framerate too.

A media box means it is doing what it is meant to do. It will play correctly, easier to interact with, and use less power. Less room, less hassles, wife friendly remote ……..gooder, more gooder.

        • +2

@snuke: nodded all the way through your post, but had to read back over the dr pepper part.. If not for the dr pepper dis it would have been a 10/10 post and a like from me.

  • I received one of these a couple of days ago… great device, but just make sure you are aware that the optical out is a standard SPDIF and not a TOSLINK port.

It's easily fixed with a $1 adapter though (as long as you remember to order one).

  • +2

Does this thing support HDMI CEC, i.e. can it be controlled by a TV remote, not by its own?

    • Yes it does.

    • +1

yes it supports CEC, i use my samsung tv remote to control

  • Is anyone using a wired ethernet adapter with this?

If so, what are they using?

    • +1

Yep - this is the one I use:

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/260954653609

      • Thanks for that.

Given there's only one USB port on the device, do you know if you can connect a USB hub so that you can also connect a hard drive, as well as this adaptor?

  • Never had an android box before, does this play 3d content?

  • I got a Telstra TV Roku Powered. Should I also get this if i have a 4k TV?

    • If you have a 4K tv and like to watch 4K content on netflix, go for it!
