Good find, but technically the price in the title for the printer and toner should be $169.00 and $65.00 respectively. That you can price match at Officeworks is a bonus which should be mentioned in the description.

I'm much more likely to get this over the Samsung printer on ShoppingSquare due to wireless, but it's quite a large price difference for wireless and faster printing. What other differences am I missing?

Edit: Larger input tray, higher horizontal resolution. Same toner yield for similar price.

      Thanks, I've updated the title.

The printer apparently have wireless and ethernet ports (i've not opened the box… too tired after being dragged out shopping with the missus)

Just to share with you some factors that got me into this printer:
      - some reviews said some printers have a max capacity printing limit per month (I think it was the canon 3100b) before structural issues
      - I want the printer to be in a separate room from the bedroom, so it being wireless is a plus, since I can put it anywhere now.
      - I decided not to get the samsung as the toner replacement is 100+
      - I could pricematch using dell, since the 2 items from dell are delivered prices, and searching from static ice, there's no other price that can match dell actually.

finally, I wanted to try a new brand :) Having owned and thrown okis, epsons, HPs, canons, samsungs…

      • I have had it for a year…great printer…

BUT No idea how to set up wireless though! haha it is impossible!
any easy to use guides on the web?

        • Yes here is my guide

          1) buy a wireless router with usb support approx 50-100 ie asus 300gp v2
          http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=asus+usb+ro…
          2) connect printer to router and follow instructions provided by the router
          3) install as per the router instructions
          4) start printing

        • Just to update here for anyone interested to get this printer… this printer have a LAN port as well as wireless capability.

As to how to configure for wireless, it's quite a roundabout way to do so. I must admit, I didn't read the manual, I believe there is an easier way to do so…. but the following is my 'techie' way. :)

The printer's wireless and wired ports are mutually exclusive (ie. only one of them can be active and connected at any one time.)

Thus to configure for wireless, you need to configure it like a LAN printer, then in the web based GUI, input the wireless settings. Then when you are done, just unplug the LAN cable, powercycle the printer or/and wait for about 1 minute.

You should be able to see the wireless printer. :)

          final remarks on this printer:
I'm quite impressed with the build quality, having owned canons and samsungs, when I place this guy over an uneven surface, I don't see the plastics flexing under it's own weight, and I still could pull out the paper tray. This is my first brother printer, and I think it might have won over a new fan.

        • some reviews said some printers have a max capacity printing limit per month (I think it was the canon 3100b) before structural issues

You refer to the duty cycle. The Samsung is rated for 5,000 pages per month, and this printer is rated for 10,000 pages per month. Personally, I doubt I'd ever need to print that much in any given month—over 3 toners worth of pages—but a higher duty cycle would be a good indicator of a higher quality product.

        • yeah. i was reading that some printers have a 300 page per month limit… and it's a sub $300 printer! quite appalling…

(incase you mistook it for a typo, its three hundred up there.)

general tidbit for newbie printer buyers:

I worked in tech centre at officeworks about 6 years ago.
Brother printers then were the best for printing costs and durability.

With Brother, you generally just change the toner.. not the head/cartridge/drum.
However, you'll have to change the drum every 20,000 sheets (or whatever).

Other brands may have the toner connected to the cartridge, making new toner expensive.

Anyway, I bought a monolaser brother (hl 1430) back then.. it's still going strong after 30000 prints or so.
I throw anything at it.. no worries… it's rock solid.

Although, I wish it would die so I could go wireless..
I also like the idea of having it outside my small bedroom.
(i -think- certain printers can give off O3 (ozone) which is toxic at certain levels to humans).

    • If its a usb printer just get a router with usb ports and there you have a wireless printer, i do this for a printer/scanner and hdd, means i have wireless scanning and printing and network storage

  • I too have a trusty HL 1430 sitting by my side, AWESOME printer.

I could recognise how good it was when we first got it so I suggested my mum and dad get one too. All three printers are still going strong after 4-5 years. Wonder if the modern brother printers are as good.

Not the best deal, HP P1102W wireless printer on staticice only $139

    http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=P1102w&spos…

    • Thats if you want a HP printer, never will buy a HP anything again myself…….

also i dont think your neg vote is justified we are not comparing the same printer here

      • +2

+1 for never buying HP printers/scanners again … horrible hardware, but worst of all, the HP driver/software is buggy bloatware that is extremely intrusive, even when not printing/scanning.

    • +2

Why would anyone compare a HP printer with a Brother printer?
I mean, i would gladly pay more for a Brother printer, for one it is alot more trustworthy than HP in terms of quality.

Anyone who owns a brother laser printer will know that.
Pls don't compare apples with oranges. (or crap vs quality)

The HP $139 is without delivery mate.

cheapest toner for that same model is $80.11 on static ice (same link you gave)

Owning a printer is not just about having a cheap printer, its the cost of the toner too.

      • Slower printing.
      • Significantly lower DPI.
      • Half the duty cycle.
      • It's a HP…
  • Doh! Just missed it, expired this afternoon from Dell, now at $209 delivered. I printed it off at lunch time and visited OW on the way home, by then it had changed. So sad. =(
