  • Is this too underpowered to run kodi?

    • +1

Yes, this is more for embedded applications. Like making an internet radio player or a clock etc.

    • +3

The Rpi original ran Kodi fine when slightly overclocked. This is a model that's clocked a bit higher than even that - so it should be fine.
A Model 3 being quadcore handles it much nicer though!

      • Yes kodi with addons is what I have been using on rpi 3 runs well.

    • For modern versions of Kodi, I'd recommend Model B (either RPi2 or RPi3)…

    • +1

Kodi works on the Pi zero, best to use a light skin on the zero. If you compare the zero to he pi2 or pi3 the difference is that the zero is laggy, but it still plays video and works fine.

There also seems to be some software optimisations since the original pi that results in noticable better performance than the original linux.

    • I have just retired my Pi model B from video tasks, which was overclocked to 800MHz and ran Kodi quite well for ABC iview and SBS catchup. There was some lag in navigating the menus but nothing wrong with video playback. I still intend to use it for ebay auction sniping (esniper for linux). OpenElec distribution may be more suitable if you just want to run Kodi.

https://thepihut.com/products/raspberry-pi-zero-w?variant=30… this is the W only, for 14.60pounds (23.50aud) if you don't need the case (or want to 3d print one instead)

    • Cheers

    • That price is delivered too (didn't know if I could edit post)

  • +4

RRP for just the pi is US$10.

    Just fyi.

    • +7

Good luck getting that price anywhere whatsoever though.

      • +1

For now at least. Yet to be seen if they can meet demand for this, at which point it will come down.

        • -1

If they can, it won't be for months - this device is a dream for all of the common projects people are getting them for.

  • Pi zero for $30 when the pi 3 can be had for $60? Why?

    • +8

Because you cannot divide by 0 without getting an exception. :)

    • +3

Better way to look at it: If a Zero can do everything you need it for, why spend twice as much?

Personally I use them for Kodi, so it's not a good choice. But I can see the merit. Compare it to an Arduino though…. 😊

  • +2

Got one this morning for 1 GBP cheaper inc shipping from Pimoroni. Sold out now.

  • With how cheaply the board can be sold its a bit of a joke that the case costs what it does

  • +1

Wow a NES mini for $24, now that's a bargain.

    • +3

      Bit slow for Nes roms

      • +2

Just get the rpi3 for $60 and have snes, n64, sega, gb, gba, etc as well then, with more than a thousand times as many games as the nes mini!

Oh yeah and dual-boot kodi too so you can stream any media you want.

        • -4

i dont know WTF you neg me for, raspberry Zero is too slow for Nes. This thread is about pi zero not 3.

        • +2

@boomramada: good one mate, if votes mean so much to you have an upvote. Oh look the neg is still there. Guess it wasn't me. Have a nice day!

        • -1

          @Putnum:

hahaha no worries mate, its all good :)

        • But emulators don't run games properly so it's nothing at all like owning the console.

        • -1

          @boomramada:
Tried retropie on an original 256MB PiB. Bit slow in some areas, but playable. Twice the RAM and faster clocked, so I'd imagine the Pi0 would emulate all NES games just fine, probably handle SNES to, same goes for equivalent generation Sega stuff as well as older arcade, etc.

          @Diji1:
Depends on the emulator, some are closer than others, "nothing like" is a bit hyperbolic though. Official NES mini is running emulation anyway.

        • -1

@Diji1: Tell that to my 11yo self that finished pokemon red in japanese before it launched in Aus

        • @Diji1: Neither is a Nes Mini.

      • +1

        Source?

There's plenty of people saying pi zero is sufficient for most SNES & Mega Drive games, and easily doing NES & Master System.

        e.g. https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3934/what-emulators-can-…

        • +1

I didn't say you cant play it, I said it is slow.
And it does struggling on some games.
Don't waste you money on this, if you want the full retropie experience. Get a Rp3.

      • Nes works perfectly on the the zero

    • +1

Probably want to add a couple of 8bitdo bluetooth controllers though. Also probably worth going for the Pi3 for the extra power even though the pi0 will probably do NES fine, the Pi3 should still be more responsive overall plus do newer systems that the pi0 will likely struggle with.

  • I've had an old Rasperry Pi in the past, but didn't like the LAN cable and cabled version for mice/keyboard.
Going to give this a try again… looks better to me!

  • Hi, I saw a lot of people talking about Kodi. But after I bought a fire stick with Kodi and I saw the latest 50 Fifty Shades of Grey on it. I was so worried and then did some research online. people say that it is possible to breach the
law if some inappropriate addons are installed and used. Can some1 clarify please. Thanks in advance.

    • +1

You watched a movie illegally… you already broke the law lol

      • I didn't even watch it. I only browsed the contents on the stick then I decided to return it.

        • +1

too late - you are 100% about to be deported; ASIO coming to GET YOU !

        • You need to hand yourself in at the police station ASAP. Take the details of your ISP (your account number etc), and explain what happened.

    • +1

Whether or not it's illegal (which I doubt) the question is who's going to come after you for the five bucks that you didn't pay to watch the movie? Bittorrent is different because you can't download without uploading at the same time. This gives them a chance to claim damages (because you've been actively involved in distributing that content) and it gives them the means to find you (unless you use a vpn). Btw, you can always uninstall those add-ons or not install them in the first place. They don't get on your system by accident. This might be worth a read:

      • +1

because you can't download without uploading at the same time.

        Erm .. yes you can.

    • You are going to jail for a long time, like at least ten years!

  • If there's a rep here can we please have a deal for the RPI3 (pretty please)

    • +3

RPI3 for $30 put me down for All. Your. Stock.

    • yes I am in for PRI3 so I can sell the RPI2

    • There was a guy that was selling the pi 3 and got hammered with issues here not long ago so good luck.

  • +1

Anyone found a way to get 2 of these shipped down under, I'd like to get 2, but not pay shipping twice :/

    • -1

      Damn, why the neg?

Maybe a clarification, Pirmoni, The Pi Hut, Adafruit, Canakit all have a purchase limit of 1 device, I'd like to buy 2, one for myself, and one for my brother.

At the moment the only way to achieve this that I can see is to buy one from two different suppliers.

Trying to get myself two in the best Ozbargainish way by not having to pay shipping twice :P

  • Question 1: Is there any point in getting the essentials pack or a case from The Pi Hut? Or get the board only, and then buy the rest on eBay?
Question 2: Can a non-wifi Pi Zero case fit a wifi Pi Zero?

    • +1
      1. The parts in the essential kit are about the same cost here, if it doesn't bump the shipping cost too much and you need those bits and pieces I'd say go for it.

      2. Yes

      • Cheers oz-stef :)

    • For the record, purchased the following on eBay (AUD inc. delivery):

      • Acrylic case (not the official case) - $2.62
      • HDMI adapter - $2.35
      • USB adapter - $1.85

Still need to source the IO headers, but reckon it'll work out cheaper.

  • +3

Update - Essentials Kit combo now in stock :)

    (Hey, comment 16,000!)

  • +1

    No Ethernet port ?

    • The original Zero was targeted for US$5. This has added Wifi and Bluetooth. I think their decisions there are fine. Not even the Model A has an ethernet port. The board size would need to double for the USB hub, socket and ethernet chips. You can add one over USB if you need it.

      • Can also use the GPIO pins with something like a ENC28J60.

    • Ethernet? Why would you need ethernet when it has BLE and WiFi.

  • All sold out.

  • Back in stock.

    Zero W & Essentials Kit costs ~$24.94.
