  • Anyone has this?

    • +1

I do and it's been pretty easy setting everything up. Mine doesn't seem to work as well with Apple products, unfortunately.

      • Thanks. Why do you say it doesn't work with Apple products?

        • I think because his doesnt

        • My Macbook & iPhone connected fine when I first set it up, but the Macbook seems to reject the connection now. My Android devices work well with it though.

      • Try changing the wireless to use only 20Mhz and see if that helps.

    • Works well

Wouldn't a more correct description be "repeater"?

    • Yep, I have a few - thy are repeaters. They work well and are pretty small, need USB for power.

  • Does it come with a usb power adapter?

    • No.

    • +7

No but it may or may not include free membership to a botnet.

  • In general for repeaters, would the received Wifi signal be noticeably slower?

    • Depends the internet you have, if ADSL2+ no because your internet is already slow. If you have cable or nbn you will notice a significant difference in download speeds but not when browsing. Get a dual band extender with 5ghz if you want to maintain speed/keep quality

      • any suggestions on a dual band extender? Been interesting in getting rid of deadspots at my home with cable internet :(

        • +2

go search officeworks, generally netgear are the most reliable however if you want value for money go with the tplink re200 both dual band

        • Expect to pay quite alot for a good dual band extender, you'll most likely see at the best price inline with best product being that you just end up using a real router in adhoc/repeater mode.

        • @hakkenaidos:

          Thanks for the tip!

Looking into TP-LINK RE210 at the moment and cheapest is $69

      • -8

this is not true, ADSL2+ is dependent on your distance from the exchange, anything under 1km and you can expect fast speeds (800m in my case and I easily get 30mbps which is equivalent to most cable services).
Yes a repeater will effectively half your bandwidth no matter what internet connection you have because it needs to first listen to the signal and then pass that signal.

        • +8

That's absolute bullshit you get 30mbps on adsl2+, I don't think that's even possible no matter how close you are to the exchange that's faster than some nbn plans.

        • +2

          @hakkenaidos:

Agreed - ADSL2+ has a theoretical max of 24Mbps and virtually nobody world see that.

        • -2

@singlemalt72: I think he meant 20mbps. I used to have ADSL and I pulled down 19.98 with a cable distance of 900m.

        • As others have noted, the ADSL+2 technology is limited to 24Mbps max. Even if you are directly next to the exchange.

Plus I found Telstra to be reaaally conservative in allocating speed to their ports. I can see the exchange from my window and I only get 13 Mbps max.

        • @Kontiki:
my friend stays beside the exchange (less than 200m), he able to get 20Mbps plus his house is new no dodgy copper

        • +3

          @edgar28:

Yeah sure that's possible. All we are saying is that it's technically not possible to surpass 24Mbps on ADLS2+, in reply to someone claiming to get 30 Mbps with his connection.

I might give Telstra a call to ask about my connection, 13 Mbs seems slow with the exchange around the corner - even for 12 year old copper.

        • @Kontiki:
yeah just admire the speed he got……

my another friend sign up NBN 25Mbps , max speed he got was 5Mbps

        • @Kontiki:

Poor Bastard … 100/100 NBN here …. still not fast enough!

        • @singlemalt72:

          100/100 ?

You sure you don't mean 100/40

        • +1

          @stussy:

100/100, 200/100, 200/200 is now a thing for fibre, it can be site dependant and only some providers have the flexibility to bother offering it.

          Eg 200/200 plans
Plan Anytime Data Off Peak Data Monthly Fee
          GBNBN‑FH32240 240 GB 32 TB $269.95
          GBNBN‑FH32600 600 GB 32 TB $279.95
          GBNBN‑FH33200 1.2 TB 32 TB $299.95
          GBNBN‑FH34400 2.4 TB 32 TB $339.95

        • @singlemalt72: Yep. Even with overhead that isnt remotely achievable.

        • @joelmuzz: I will wait till a deal is posted on OzB.

        • +1

          @stussy:

          Nope, 100/100 :D

  • Does any one know how long can this last on a 10,000mAh xiaomi powerbank?

    • +3

Purely doing the maths gives it 20 hours theoretical minimum at 100% usage.

      • +1

Science! (and your username doth not disappoint!)

  • Is this one OK if I just wanna have better reception in one of my upstairs rooms? I occassionally have guests in that room but Wifi signal has been very inconsistent in that room.

    • Not ideal, but could give it a try- it's only $10. Might have to experiment a bit with placement though (i.e. find a good balance between distance from the main router and room, testing at a few points).

    • I bought 3 of the original ones of these and worked fine in a triple storey. One on each level in the stairway. Top storey got about 300k/s

  • +2

So thse repeaters, they're a bit rubbish on their own, even the best branded one. However if this has an ap function and you managed to buy a set of cheap powerline adapters set this thing into ap mode you'll get full speed otherwise enjoy that 5Mbps max throughput or like another user said just pay the extra for dual band.

    • No AP function unfortunately (no Ethernet interface).

      • Does it do client mode then?

  • +1

    how good is this? :P

shipping time 7-45 days ….. wow

    • +1

I can assure you - it aint gonna be 7!

      • even DeLorean DMC-12 doesn't help?

        • Not with Zapals!

        • @McFly:

We have no choice but to send Biff Tannen to loosen them up

I am on TPG ADSL2 with TPG provided router. Will it help in extending the range in some of the slow zones

    • +2

      Probably.

  • Hi guys does anyone know if this is purely repeats your existing SSID hotspot or creates another extension SSID that you will need to connect to? The ad doesn't confirm this.

    Thanks

    • Creates a second SSID.

      • Not sure what this means but there is an option to clone your original router ssid. On iPhone you only ever see your router ssid but it has been entended

        • I'm using first gen and it creates a second be default. You're right though. It can be set to be the same SSID.

    • +2

Does both. Its a repeater and an extender. You can opt to have a separate network (What I recommend) or it can extend the current network and kick in once it establishes itself as the stronger network after a speed loss (Oftentimes the phone tends to stay on this hence speeds and latency suffer)

  • +2

You should really avoid repeaters where possible. The create lag and slow down everything else on the network.

If you can't put an Ethernet cable to the other location, then in most cases your best option is a TP-Link TL-WPA4220KIT which sends the data through the power circuit in your house. Then at the other end has a wifi access point.

Alternatively get a really good dedicated wifi access point and position it correctly. I eliminated the need for one access point in the house by doing this. I also have the TP-Link TL-WPA4220KIT to cover a spot behind the steel reinforced concrete of the swimming pool.

    • +1

I plan to use the repeater for outdoors only when the network is not needed indoors. That should work OK, or would there still be lag?

      • This is our current case. Also the wii for some strange reason cant connect to the linksys router and this is the only cheap option

    • the TP Link Kit seems like a great option but is the price justified? Is it better to spend that much money on a better router than the one that came with from ISP?

  • Would it help with travel?
Sometimes, in holiday apartments, we only get Wifi at a particular inconvenient spot. Such as, at a particular desk just within the entrance door from the stairwell. Or sitting on the entrance stairs.
We would not know the router configuration login password. Is this required?
However, we would know login username and password for the WiFi usage.
    Any ideas welcome, thank you.

    • +1

The range is pretty good. You download the mi home app then from within select which network to join and provide the password

  • +1

Bought two, for $20 can't hurt to try it.

It's either this or replacing my gf's network with a UAP-AC-HD for $500 so if this at least improves the minecraft-ability downstairs, we'll be happy. :P

    • Get a few Unifi AC lites instead if you want to keep cost down

    • Most people could just go for UAP AC Lite and it would more than do what they need. Given most people are lucky to receive a useful 5GHz signal when they move into the next room, UAP AC HD is really an over kill.

I am a bit concerned about the security on these Xiaomi Mi WiFi type devices.

      • "I am a bit concerned about the security on these Xiaomi Mi WiFi type devices."

        Why in particular these?

        • May be it is just all the malware/spyware that is being loaded onto this brand of phones by Chinese resellers trying to make an extra $.

        • @not a bargain:

Aren't they all at it? Whoever 'they' are.

  • working with some apple drive, win 7 pc,
but have the issue with some android mobiles and win10 pc, wifi connection no issue but no internet, able to get ip address from the DHCP(router) but ping router with no response.
google it, lot of people have the same issue.

  • bought one.
Does it have to connect using the app? and if so, is creating an account mandatory?

  • FYI for anyone who reads this, took them a week to process the order..

  • Got mine today. Thanks OP

  • Where do you find instructions in English?

  • Ok got mine but cant get it to connect. Gets to 90 percent and times out. Anyone connected OK after getting that issue? Have followed the instructiions in the abouve link like setting to mainland china and resetting it but same result each time.
