Hey any deals for one with a bigger screen ?

  • Thanks great looking deal. For the RAM is there any benefit to going either 8+8 or straight 16Gb?

    • +1

Negligible but if you want to upgrade then maybe go with 16. I'd prefer 8+8

      • 8+8 would be better performance wise for dual channel. Only get 16gb if you plan on buying anything 16gb down the line.

    • if you dont need to upgrade get 2x8

      • +2

For regular day in and day out use (which is what these general purpose machines are), you'd be nuts not to get a single 16GB stick when it's a no cost option. If there is any remote possibility of upgrading ram you have the free slot. Otherwise, you throw away the 2 x 8GB's and start again.

Sure dual channel will "out benchmark" single channel (it has to), in the real world you won't notice.

        • +6

What real world is this where you'd be using more than 16gb in this laptop?

        • +2

@Gururek: I do suspect that by the time I need 32GB that I'll have a new laptop.

        • +1

          @Gururek:

I do dev work, would typically have a browser open with JS debugging, Visual Studio, various services, maybe some docker containers. Can hit up to 16GB pretty quickly. But even for "regular users" think in 3-4 years time, by have a spare slot it's easy give the machine a life but upgrading the memory.

Again I still stand by, better to have a free slot available than have both used up.

        • @BlinkyBill: I do all that on my desktop PC with 16GB DDR3 RAM and I've never run into memory issues (VS Code instead of VS). I'm never even careful about it. I suspect all I would have to do is use a tiny bit of restraint while working on my laptop and I'd be fine for many years to come.

        • @jazoom:

So why not have a free slot if it doesn't cost any extra? When in practical terms there be no perception in speed difference. Sure if you had to pay a premium for a single 16GB stick, get 2x8GB but if doesn't cost any more go single 16GB.

        • +1

@BlinkyBill: I didn't suggest not getting the 16GB stick. I'm just surprised you needed so much memory to do dev.

But I think the point is, if you get to the point where you need 32GB of RAM in 3-4 years, you should probably buy a new machine instead of using the 3-4 year old laptop and paying for another stick.

      • You need to upgrade if you plan on using for multiple virtual machines or whatever application requires large amount of RAM. Saying that some ppl think 32GB is huge while others see it as not enough.

  • Any chance to get a 1440p config? It's unavailable in the options :-(

    Thanks for getting deals!

    • Sorry I thought this was the 470 that had the touchpad screen. My mistake

  • After being let down by Grays online for $650 X1 Carbon G4, I am really hoping for a deal on a T or X series Lenovo from the outgoing models.

    • +2

What do u mean by let down did they dishonour??

      • +2

Yes, they claim a technical issue with the stock number, bait advertising if you ask me and they don't notify until the day before it's due for delivery. So disappointing as it's exactly what I needed and I bought before even half of their supposed stock of 30 was sold.

    • Same!

  • Great work tightarse.

    Why is this so cheap?

    • +3

The better question would be, how many minutes before it's this cheap again ;-) I actually have one of these machines and they seem to work well for general use (apart from the annoying position of the CTRL key) but 900-1000 is pretty much the price anyone should pay.

      • +2

You can swap the CTRL and Fn keys in the BIOS.

Well, not sure on this model but I have had previous Lenovos and they have that option.

        • Thanks lll check it out

      • Hey mate, I'm thinking about getting one although I'd rather a 13" ultrabook.

Do you think this one would just be too heavy to use it like an ultrabook?

        • 'Heavy' is a relative term. I don't find it particularly heavy for my needs but you may not agree. Best to check the specs and make up your own mind.

    • +3

its really all its worth, just a consumer plastic laptop with an average screen.

      • +2

But the specs are quite good for a laptop. Usually you can't get these specs anywhere near this price.

        • Hovering over the trigger on this one. How much would you expect to pay for a similar spec (say, with a more premium build)?

        • @Ninth Sphere: It depends. But for comparison there was a Dell "as new" refurb. posted here last week for $1300 with similar specs except an awful TN panel display and an SSD half the size (had a 1TB HDD).

        • @jazoom:

          Appreciate your input. thanks

        • @Ninth Sphere: No probs. I've only been in the market for a laptop for a couple of weeks so I'm probably not the best judge. This is just what I've noticed in this time.

        • @jazoom:

On this current Lenovo deal Can we add an additional HDD or are we stuck with just one HDD port / slot.

        • @dealman: I'm not sure, but I did buy one of the SP4 deals posted last night. :-)

        • @jazoom:

Just spoke to Lenovo CHat… NO It doesn't have an extra slot for a HDD so you have to replace the ssd if you want a bigger drive, and 15 - 20 days delivery.

This model ships in 6-9 business days and delivery will take 5 business days.

Currently we don't have an option to expedite the shipment.
It comes with only one storage drive. it doesn't have any space for second storage drive.

      • I have never cared for "high-end" laptops containing the same components inside. I have had a Dell latitude for work, and it was a heavy brick offering zero benefits (to me) over a low-end laptop. I would pay more for low weight, but not for business grade.

        • Compare a Dell Precision to an Inspiron or Vostro. Chalk and cheese.

  • This or the Xiaomi 13.3 Air?

    • Wasn't that sold out (the deal)?

      • yeh but I'm sure the deal will be back soon.

Yikes, this lappy weighs 1.9Kg. No thanks :)

        • +1

          Different use cases.

This is more of an office computer/work machine. Note features like the LAN port.

Xiaomi Air is a great travel/portable laptop, but maybe not the best choice if you're using it at your desk 8 hours a day.

    • +1

      ask Donna.

      • +2

        Donna or "The Donna"?

      • Or Felicity?

  • Nice specs, but I would prefer something lighter.

    "Weight: Starting at 1.9 kg"

The price is $1499 and the code is invalid. Where did you get this code?

    • +3
      • -1

        Ends 11:59pm
        Now it's $1499

        • +1

Sorry, no idea what you mean. Code works and expires Sunday.

        • Just tried it and it works for me aswell.

To buy or not to buy. That is the question.

        • Yeh works, I copied the code with a space. Sorry Bro ;)

        • +1

@aljafari: That's really not your fault. It's coding 101 to trim input strings.

    • I have been able to apply the code successfully. I haven't pulled the trigger yet but in the cart it goes down to the $915

  • +2

    Thanks TA, Nice price!

Do you know if another Yoga X1 (i7) deal is coming up anytime soon?

    Cheers!

  • Hmm very tempting but i want to pay like $700-800 for something… and maybe more portable.
Will cashrewards work with the coupon code???

    • Yes, it's in the description.

      • Thx ta

  • Is it worth spending the extra $100 to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro?

    • You can always upgrade at a later date. You're going to do a fresh install of Windows anyway, right?

      • Sorry if I don't understand properly but why would I need to do a fresh install of Windows? I thought the laptop came with either Home or Pro preinstalled.

        • +1

Spyware. Adware. Crapware. Laptops tend to come with a bunch of junk that you'll never use. The device maker gets paid for including other companies' crapware.

          Google Superfish.

          Just dont trust this brand.

        • @jazoom:
Makes sense. Presumably you can just do a clean install with the same product key so it doesn't cost anything extra?
And I don't suppose you know what the cost would be to upgrade from Home to Pro at a later date? ie. is it more or less than the $100 it would cost though Lenovo?
          Thanks for your help.

        • @Jif: Honestly, I'm planning to use my "Windows Insider" membership to install pro. I have it on a desktop PC from doing that. I hope it still works that way. I don't know why you would want pro though. The only reason I need it is so I can use HyperV for virtual machines.

A clean install won't cost you anything. You can use the same key the machine comes with.

  • this or xps 13 ?

    • Is there an XPS 13 for a similar price somewhere?

      • Not really, but I have one on order for 400 more.
I am wondering if it is worth that much for maybe 500 extra grams.

        • Definitely worth it IMO if you need the portability often. actual difference is 700-800g I think

        • @watts: how about compare to the Asus Zenbook ux330 for $940? Core i5 though.

        • @fm: It's would be a no brainer for me if that zenbook had any sort of dedicated graphics card.

        • @TheOneWhoGotAway: obly if u play games right?

        • @fm:

          Just the occasional simple ones.
Otherwise if the i7 could hold up without a graphics card I'd maybe pick that

    • XPS

  • Is there something similar coupon for i5 - which could reduce the price further by 150 or so ?

  • Was waiting for a Lenovo Yoga to go on sale, really wanted a 2 in 1 at uni for a change. But should I just go with this?

Comp sci degree. A lot of IDE and dual booting to Ubuntu work this year.

      • Just remember the yoga 3 pro uses the fanless 5w processors aka new gen atom, while this has the 15w ulv processors.

    • +1

you will suffer with a 2 in 1 at uni. trust me, i was around so many people complaining about slow compile times and lag on autocomplete because they didn't have enough CPU power. I on the other hand was rocking a 17" gaming beast because i couldn't justify buying another machine, but it pulled me through with all its horsepower like a breeze.

i'd rather you get this over a yoga.

      • Yup, I decided to drop my desire for a Yoga and bought this. :D

  • Do this one support miracast without any probs ?

My current Lenovo laptop says supported, but its connecting to any smart tv!!

  • +6

Can posters of laptop and desktop deals PLEASE stop saying stuff like "2GB Nvidia" or "2GB AMD" in the title.
The amount of VRAM pails in comparison to the actual chip. Eg. a GT720M and a GTX1050 both come with 2GB of VRAM, yet the latter is literally more than an order of magnitude more powerful than the former. Not to mention it costs significantly more.

    • +1

Was literally just about to post exactly the same thing. The VRAM is meaningless. Change it to "nVidia 940MX" rather than "2GB nVidia".

      • Its like how electronics stores advertise a laptop based on the amount of RAM and HD space it has in addition to its screen size. Um what about the most important part, the CPU and screen resolution? I don't care if you have 32GB of RAM and a 2TB SSD if its being run by an Intel Atom CPU on a 768p screen.

        • To be honest, I think advertising RAM and disk space over CPU actually makes sense for the vast majority of people. The CPU, for most people, won't affect their usage, however limited RAM will affect them when they've got a dozen Chrome windows open, and a lack of disk space will affect them when their friend brings his movie collection over.

Screen resolution is also an iffy one; a lot of people would actually prefer lower res as it makes it easier to read text (and Windows scaling still has a long way to come).

        • @CarbonTwelve:

Who cares how many apps you can have open at once and how many movies your HD can hold when it takes your laptop 10x longer to do anything?
Sure once you have an acceptable base level of performance like say a Pentium… Most people don't buy i3/i5/i7. So ensuring they don;t end up with an Atom or Celeron is imperative.
Anyway, most light users only need 4GB of RAM and 250GB of storage. If they have a large movie collection they use an external.

        • @Viper8: I guess my point is IMO people need 8GB RAM more than they need a faster CPU. Even a Core M is capable of whatever most users need to do, yet they're all going to get frustrated whenever they try to switch windows with 20 open; your average user doesn't care if it takes half a second longer to open, but they will care if the whole system slows down and they don't realise it's the number of things open that's causing it.

  • +1

If im going to pay that much for a laptop it has to have backlit keyboard.

    • Not dismissing your opinion, although I don't think it would apply to most people, but can I ask why? Just how often are you using your laptop in the dark but need to type yet not touch type?

      • Don't really get this either. Most people can touch type. The concern with this laptop (aside from weight) for me is that the display is supposedly very average and apparently cant even output to a 4k monitor according to one of the reviews.

        • +2

well im a 2 finger typer and when im sitting in the lounge and the lights are low i need a backlit keyboard.

        • @paulaus: 11 fingers huh

    • Yeah I am the same…. Need the back lit keyboard…

  • Looks like a great deal - has there been anything better in the past 6 months?

I'm trying to keep a mental catalogue but I'm losing track…

  • -1

Code doesn't seem to work any longer.

For Lenovo Item "ThinkPad E470 - i7 with 2GB graphics Part No.20H1A022AU" when I try to enter eCoupon TA-E470-915 it responds with "Coupon code is not valid for the current cart. Please input a valid one."

The Lenovo store wants me to activate LASTCHANCE as the eCoupon for the Lenovo discounted price of $969. How do I get your price of $915?

    • I contacted Lenovo Chat. They told me TA-E470-915 expired at 9:00pm today! The Chat person told me that they could still access it as it hadn't been closed to them yet, so I placed an order through them.

Now, how do I register for the Cashrewards since I placed the order via the support rep?

      • You won't get cashback if you ordered through a rep. You need to click out via CR for cashback. And the coupon works fine. Coupon expires Sunday.

        • I did click out via Cashrewards, but it would not accept the coupon. I saw your picture you posted earlier on this thread, but it would not work. Have you tried recently? The Lenovo person said it expired at 9pm. Do you want a copy of the chat?
