  • Bought one of these recently from another seller and it has been great. Plays just about any media file I throw at it and PVR side works quite well for a basic device. Great price too!

  • Support Output Resolution(s) 720p, 576p, 1080i

    No 1080p?

    • 1080P??? in a Set Top Box? Free to Air TV is only transmitted in 1080I regardless. Your TV will upscale to whatever its native resolution is.

It will however support 1080P for media files. (Bluray VOB etc.) i should have mentioned that. Thanks for the heads up.

  • not bad, but how about one that connects to your network and stream/connects directly to network shares?

does it support h.264, typically they are contained in mkv which it does play, but not sure if its manditory.

    Support Output Resolution(s) 720p, 576p, 1080i
    not bad…

love how your honest about the manual and remote!

    • Yes H264 supported (of course). H264 is more commonly used in transport streams.

The poster obviously hasnt been watching the deals posted , there is much better deals out there do your research before posting ie pvr usb media player BS

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/29602 39.95 + 9.95 Del
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/29717 69.00 from aldi

The there is always the laser for 49.00 and up

    • We did read both posts before we posted this.

Your first link is for a Set Top Box which plays media files (mp3 and JPG) and does not record TV,

The second ALDI one has very poor media file support.

The Yess 9300 kicks the c**p out of both.

  • pardon my ignorance, but does it support terresterial? or FTA only?

  • the 9300's a bargain at this price, and for those thinking there are cheaper pvr with hd output , that can also reliably playback many formats, please list 'em! no, the aldi and laser don't count - invariably, these don't playback mkv, h264. And picture quality on the laser's crap (i know, i have one in storage now).

    • -1

umm yes they do, the picture on the laser is fine with a firmware update and the settings changed from the standard.

Trying to find the truth in your post but it is all wrong, why is the 9300 a bargain ?

it does get good reviews and can be bought from crazystu

      http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/140…

but being far superior to either devices you say are shit well my friend thats the lie

      • Thats incorrect, there are 2 different chipsets these things operate on and most don't have media file support. One is NEC and the other is MSTAR.

The only OTHER unit (other than the 9300) we know of that has full media file support is the Strong SRT5429 which is sold for around $179-$240 with a 160GB HDD.

The other important feature is that this works with all HDDs, powered or non powered, NTFS or FAT32 with multiple partition support. No issues with WD 2.5" HDDs. It should be noted that you can only play back from an NTFS parition, you can not record to it - Hence the importance of multiple partition support. Fat32 for recording, NTFS for very very large > 4GB media files (bluray vob).

  • looks like it does not support RM/RMVB.

  • +3

i have one, it will do just about every file format except realmedia and wmv, to the whiners, this is primarily a HD SET TOP box, the recording and media playback are a bonus, i haven't seen any other STB support so many formats, it's no WD Tv Live, but it's close, and cheaper

I cannot find any review or screenshots of this item. Can anybody tell me if there is an electronic program guide (like 7 days or so)? Can I do Tivo style Seasons passes (I guess not)? Also, can you search for shows by name? I wish I found a user's review on the web, somehow cannot find one on google. Thanks for your input! Also, can I connect 2.5" WD HDs to it?

    • -1

Yes, there is an electronic program guide. As for program changes, not instant, but < than 1 second most of the time. Time to lock varies and depends on signal quality which here is average. You can however scroll through channels instantly - untill you find one which you want to watch, then leave the remote, 1 second later, it will change channel.

For the record, no DVBT box or PVR changes channels instantly, they all need to lock before you can view anything - this usually takes around 1 second, unless (like me) you own a Sony TV in which case expect to be waiting 3-5 seconds on its inbuilt tuner.

Season pass is not possible, but daily and weekly recordings are.

Can anybody who has one of these gadgets let me know the answers to these 3 x questions:- Does it change channels fast (instant), or is there a lag when changing channels? How good is the epg? I.e. does it take time to load or is it also nice and fast and alsways loaded? Lastly, can you reorganise the channels to any order, or is the channel order locked?

    • -1

EPG speed is good, providing you have changed to that channel. EPG is list type and comprehensive. Load times are fast, full program info loads comparatively quickly (compared to Olin HVBTR-1200 or similar). You can customize any channel to any number. You can also sort by Channel name, ID, LCN etc.

EPG is aesthetically simple (8 bit display), however its easy to use, quick, informative and logical.

      • Thank-you!

***UPDATE Just added extended warranty +2 years (3 years total) for $7.95 OZB members only. Down from $29.95. If that doesn't convince you, I don't know what will.

    • "If that doesn’t convince you, I don’t know what will."

probably if the additional warranty was free :P haha but more seriously thank you for the time and effort you have spent promoting the worthiness of this product and answering all the questions of fellow ozbargainers above, many of which i also had doubts about. Did of a bit of research earlier in the day and for what this does, it looks like a pretty darn good unit at this price! will be placing an order in the morning pending finance minister approval (dont actually need another STB but the additional playback features make it very worthwhile on the spare telly which currently has a plain $30 SD STB).

  • no support of RMVB :(

  • Hi junglejumble
it looks like a good pvr/media player the only concern I have is that an external HDD is always on (no mateer if the unit itself is on or off).
Can you please confirm it or suggest otherwise.
    Thank you.

    • -1

Sure, the HDD will remain powered on while the unit is in standby, however if the unit is switched off and the HDD is powered via USB, the HDD will of course turn off. Using WD Green drives with these units is ideal as power consumption in standby is kept to an absolute minimum as read / write heads are removed from plate - reducing friction, vibration, noise, power and importantly wear.

To my knowledge all units of this type retain HDD power while in standby. It is best in this case to use quality HDDs made for PVRs. (WD Green AV Drives). Seagate also make a range of AV drives, however I can not personally vouch for their quality. I do know Mediastar / Vantage have sucessfully used them in their HD8000T for quite some time.

  • Hi! Just new to this site! Considering purchasing this Yess 9300 unit, Could you please tell me if it supports playback of .m2ts files?

    • Good luck getting anything less than a Blueray Player to play those files. They are encrypted.

      • The movie files i've downloaded off the internet have the .m2ts file extension and are not encrypted and play on VLC media player, also on whirlpool forums and a couple of others it states this unit plays bluray and dvd? I just want to know for sure if it will play these files or not?

        • m2ts is usually an encrypted Bluray container file. The Yess plays bluray and DVD VOB or TS or TRP. not m2ts.

          • @junglejumble: Well as far as i can tell VOB is only a DVD file format, i cant find anywhere it corresponds with Bluray, does this mean the Bluray files(m2ts?) have to be converted to VOB-DVD files first, or what is the file extension of the Bluray that you are talking about called?

  • I just tested m2ts and despite the lack of documentation on the support of this file type it works just fine.

VOB is often used for Bluray rips. VOB is technically not a DVD or Bluray format, its a container format used by those who rip optical media which may contain multiple codecs, menu files, subtitles etc. Vob is used because it can retain the options and menus all in one file. You will see if you open a Bluray or DVD on computer, there is a multitude of files of which make the one disc.

    • OK! Can you tell me if it supports timeshift for live tv recordings? and, choice magazine tested this unit along with 9 others and it got the worst score, especially for the digital tuner performance, and ease of use, does this mean it will need a booster to pick up the signal?

      • You do not need a booster to pick up signal. Saying that the YESS has a poor tuner is absolute rubbish. Certainly tuner strength is not part of the feedback I have received about this unit. Choice magazine should stick to reviewing washing machines. This article demonstrated a very poor knowledge of the things PVR buyers consider important.

For instance they put weight on the following features :

DAC/OPTICAL - What were they thinking? This does not separate a good PVR from a Bad one!

"FORWARD SKIP" (I think they mean ad skip as its known). - They said Yess 9300 has no Ad skip - It definitely does - 10-90seconds variable.

USB FRONT / REAR - Fair enough

NTFS Support (They claim in the table on 3/10 units have this support, yet in the editorial, they claim they all do - so which is correct?)

        Ethernet - Fair enough

Scart - What were they thinking here? This also does not separate a good PVR from a Bad one!

Timer Recording Limit - Not something I would use for weighting, certainly not over what they forgot about.

Timeshift - fair enough. - Although most of the figures here were incorrect.

        and Price - fair enough.

And here's what they forgot to rate the units on:

Reliability of recordings. - VERY IMPORTANT

Turn on and Off to record sheduled recordings. - VERY IMPORTANT

Media Player File support - YESS leads the all products reviewed in terms of supported file types.

        File names contain Program name.

        Pre and Post Padding.

Once, daily and weekly recordings. - VERY VERY IMPORTANT- Not all of the units listed support this.

I think you'll find if any of these were taken into consideration when they came up with their numbers and % rating, including the fact the YESS was misquoted on Ad Skip functionality, the YESS 9300 would have fared better than most of the units listed.

How the YESS was rated poorer than the Kogan or DGTEC DGHD6760 is absolutely laughable when you look at the features and price.

  • OK! I purchased this unit from you guy's and installed it! The 1st thing i will say is the picture quality is excellent, and was very happy with the scan and the digital tuner works perfectly and picked up all the channels effortlessly! So choice was not right, at least in my case. I have a Tvix 2230, and i need a booster to use it. This is just an early stage but the instructions are probably the worst i have ever read, and i'm now trying to learn about this unit by trial and error, pushing buttons to see what happens. The 1st file i put on was a movie i downloaded, it was Edge of Darkness.mkv with Mel Gibson. The picture played perfectly but there was no sound. I checked the audio file and the codec is "dts" and many of the other movies MKV have the same audio codec. What can i do to fix this problem? Thanks!

  • As the YESS 9300 does not support DTS, you'll have to unpack the MMKV container, isolate the audio stream and convert it to Dolby as apposed to DTS. Best tool I've found for the job is OJOsoft total video converter (about $30USD) because it is incredibly easy to use and comes pre packed with the defaults you'll need for just about any conversion job - is also powerful enough to enable you to manually change codec settings, resolution, bitrate frame rate etc etc etc.

Alternatively, there are many free conversion apps out there - however I have found they tend to be much more difficult to use and a lot slower than licensed software.

In regards to the manual, I agree, we did offer to re-write the manual for YESS, however it was too late when we offered as they were already printed. I found the detail IS there, it just not easy to understand - Perhaps my Chinglish is better than yours? :) If you have any questions, please give us a call on 1300 11 99 15. We have a unit on the test bench all the time and can walk you through any questions over the phone.
