Why is this card cheaper than gtx 970?
I woulda have thought its new so it's better so it would cost more?

    • Both GTX1060 variants(3GB/6GB) are faster than the GTX970 and use less power.

This is a good buy for anyone on a tight budget.

    • 1060 is also slightly faster and uses half the power of a 970. It's really a no brainer to get the 1060, its fantastic bang for buck right now. I got mine from amazon last month for $270 landed (mines the evga 3gb SC version).

GTX 970 is a previous generation card so it's not newer. GTX 970 is older than the GTX 1060, not newer. Also GTX 970 might be getting lower in stock and so the price increases for that.

    • Newer doesn't always mean more expensive. If it's more efficient, reduced manufacturing cost, less power consumption, then it's cheaper to produce and can be marketed more aggressively. Also competition.

For example the 8800GT came out was just about as fast as a 8800gtx, but cost less than 75% of the price

      • Yeah and also mass production reduces the cost of the product too. Production of the GTX 1060 may have been far more than that the GTX 970 was.

        • manufacturing cost is a non factor probably 1/10th of the rrp. these cards are priced so nvidia can recoupe their R&D costs and make a profit so they can begin next round of r&d…

    • Majority of the cost comes from the GPU die/chip. The chip used in the GTX 1060 is almost half the size of the one used in the GTX 970/980, this is how they can sell it for less.

      • Ok, I think your answer is the best as it explains the actual reason for the price difference.

    • I think it's due to the fact that you cannot SLI the 1060s. SLI 2x 970s can push out nearly the same performance as a 1080 at roughly the same price. Being able to SLI 2x 1060s would have on par performance as a 1080 but at a much lower price. So not being able to SLI the gtx 1060 means that its price can be much lower.
