Cheap Temporary Housing

Hey OZB, I come to you from my phone in a park.. merely within hours last night I was made effectively homeless as the result of a pretty crazy assault on myself.. I'm in a city (Perth) where I have no friends and family in, I've spent 1 night in my car but I think that's all I can take.
I really don't know what to do as of yet, I don't think I could take the $100+ a night a hotel will charge even compared to my car.

Are there any places anyone or specifically Perth locals know of that rent places at a much lower rate than $100 a night I see most single bed offseason hotels go for (where I can hopefully continue work from my laptop but the realisation anywhere budget most likely won't have wifi is something I just realised while writing this).

Any help or advice will be great and extremely appreciated.
Thanks.

Edit: haven't quite put my finger on what's best but I would like to seriously thank everyone that helped or just cohersed some conversation. Like I was saying earlier, I'm more shook up than anything.. I can happily defend myself -andrenaline and shock are emotion changers!

Oh and PVA takes overall MVP of the thread!
.. now do me pride and each sleep in your bed 30mins longer tonight to make up for what I may miss out on (only due to being cheap and a bad procrastinator).

The positive outlook OZB has given me to treat this as more of a holiday than escaping has been priceless.

My current situation is going up to recharge my stuff today at the library and find the best small strong tent that I'll keep for the future. It's been 2 nights in the car but atleast it's a statesman, I just have to choose between laying down legs crossed in backseat, or laying down legs out window but that has occured to me as abit of a security risk with how much tech I'm carrying

I honestly (incl whirlpool) can't think of another forum that would be as helpful as here ..Let alone be somewhat along for the ride with me.
As I've said in PM's ..There's no way to quantify the thanks I want to give to everyone!

        • Checked, thanks mate

  • Day 5 proceeding from.. Night 6 — does it even matter?

  • +1

Sure it matters. In the scheme of things, this is a short period of time. Looking forward, taking baby steps. Everything you do now, will bring a result at some time…

  • +1

Yikes poor thing. Even though you don't get benefits pop into your local centrelink and ask them if they a have list of places for free /low cost meals. Similar to this (my local one)
    http://www.wollongong.nsw.gov.au/services/community/director…

They can probably tell you places to shower free as well (not sure if the pool is free.) We have a hot shower at the toilets next to the local surf club and people leave shampoo body wash etc for anyone to use. I don't think there's much that can be fixed by a hot healthy meal and and warm shower.

    • -1

Yeah was already going to do that today, I called yesterday and completely forgot that when you call, you have to wait like 2hours only to get hung up on somewhere in the process.

I'll be sure to ask the things you were talking about though, thanks.

  • +2

OP can you explain your situation in more detail? Don't you have a job? Are you from Perth? It seems strange that you have no friends or family.

    • -8

Answers to your questions have all been clearly laid out, it seems strange that this is the way you chose to phrase things.
I'm not here for your entertainment and I wouldn't be here at all if not for the very helpful OZB users helping and seemingly along for the journey.

      • +6

Well I've just read through all your posts again, and they haven't. I don't think an attitude like that is going to help anyone; you aren't painting a clear picture of the situation at all, and my personal thoughts are that if you think buying a tent is some kind of solution, you are grossly mistaken and about half a step away from becoming a transient. It's hard to determine why you are in Perth, the events that led to you being without accomodation (apart from a vague reference to an assault), why you think sleeping in a car is a good idea, why you haven't either checked into proper accomodation, left Perth for wherever it is you came from, or found permanent accomodation with new flatmates. You haven't explained if you have a job (apart from a vague reference to programming?) so it seems unlikely given that you think sleeping in a tent in a park is a good idea, so the obvious solution to me seems like you need to get in your Statesman, and drive back to your family and friends. I think your course of action so far is not wise, and your stolen computer is testament to this.

        • +4

C'mon mate.. that's a bit too harsh for someone who is trying to find their two feet again and screw their head on right. I'm sure once that's cleared up, s/he will be in a better position to think and move forward.

        • -4

@D6C1: thanks for explaining the brunt of it on my behalf, appreciated much.

It's not just an unhelpful reply, it's full of assumptions and in light of how this thread evolved, I didn't want to fall to his level, it's why my first reply is defensive (in the hopes he would find something better to do). The only information he doesn't have is information I don't want to be public, like how and what the DV entailed.
The only advice I can see through it all is either, blow a shitload of your liquid assets into a hotel or get the fk back in your car and drive to where family is (3,500km~).

It strikes me as odd that he is the only person out of everyone who can't understand or atleast read the past replies to get an understanding and then offer.. critism? I'm quite glad that wasn't the first post when I posted here.

          Ugh, /rant

        • @dfaktz: You're just a bit too defensive there. I can attest that thorton82 is a valuable long-standing member here on Ozbargain and has contributed usefully to plenty of posts in the past. There are members who typically offer critical and/or cynical comments but he/she isn't one of them.

Let's move on and focus on the problems at hand.

        • I had to read the following comments after this to finally see the DV comments, and yes I'm in the same bucket as thorton not really having any idea what was going on.
Even now I somewhat still with this original comment. I mean you have cops involved with your stolen property, but not with the fact you are assaulted. All this effort seemingly going it alone and on OzB instead of all these authorities set up to deal with exactly this does not seem wise to me still.
          Either way best of luck!

        • +2

          @dfaktz:
TBH I thought you were a troll when you said you "lived in Perth", had "no friends or family there" and "worked in IT, remotely".

Why not just move to where you have family/support and continue to work remotely?

Well, you answered that above. ~3500km.

If you have somewhere to leave your car, do consider flying home if you can. A flight is not much more than a night or two's accommodation.

  • +2

If I may ask, what happened to you in the first place op? Why did you become homeless in merely hours?

    • DV

      • +2

Hopefully everything will be sorted out. Sorry can't be much of a help as I am in Syd.

        • No help needed, everyone's already gone above and beyond for me, it's been refreshing.
Thanks for taking the time though, have a great day.

  • Not sure if you're ready for this. You choose. Phone or chatline
    https://www.lifeline.org.au/get-help/online-services/crisis-…

    • +1

No I definitely do have that (people to talk about it with).. luckily!

  • +1

They help with crisis accomm. They have a special dv section. They have resources, info

    • +1

Oh, right, well I'm off to centrelink now to see what resources they offer or send me to. I'll make sure to mention them and see if they have an opinion or are able to tell me that in this situation, centrelink is indeed the correct assigned authority to see. Though im not holding my breathe due to yesterdays phone call (or lack thereof, with them)

  • +11

Wow - was just leaving the library got a call from the cops saying they MIGHT have my stuff.. they've arrested 2 'young kids' that were caught breaking into cars at the shopping center across the road last night.

They said the reason they called with high hope was timing and proximity to the first crime, and that this rarely happens this way. (It happened 1.5km to the library, the shopping center is about 1km, so this is all super close to their station)

I've given them even more details about my tech and they will get back to me at the end of the day or tomorrow. They said proof would merely mean describing it and then logging in.

Please please let this be a slither of luck. I've paid for a hotel room for the night, a special came up for 60$ at a 4star place nearby, since its been 5 days/6 nights now, I'm really craving a proper recharge, figuratively and literally.
..Hopefully late checkout so I can punch some work out in the morning.

    • +4

wow. I've been following your thread.
All the best. I hope you get your stuff back!

    • +2

Good news … I wish you all the best.

    • +2

That's awesome news! Hopefully it's true.

    • +1

Hopefully everything pulls through at least on that, seriously (profanity) those kids I hope they get whats coming to them.

      • +2

Well, I feel the same.. and funny you mention it(looking at username). going to the 'Land of Smeg' seems like a good punishment, you taking any new clients at the moment?

To Everyone just got to my hotel, gonna finish replies and allow myself to just relax Infront of a tv for an hour.. hell I'll watch straight commercials at the moment.. at the same time I'll be waiting and hoping for that call.

        • +1

That's a bit harsh, I don't think that Red Dwarf would be a punishment. In fact it would keep them off the streets and teach them some culture.

    • +1

Make sure that you have enough cash to last till this event ends. Good luck man!

  • 😊😊😊😊😊

  • +2

there are some public places with free shower\toilet etc, think a corporate building. hard to find as not publicized but work great. i know my uni's ground floor bathroom next to the gym had full shower and locker facilities, anyone could pretty much walk up and use them, however you would need to know it exists. there are cheap motels further out from the cbd.

    • +1

Yep, great advice and something I would give to others in the future. I have found those places now though, out of sheer necessity as you can imagine after 5 days haha.

I have a 'grid' now for camping or out of my car, where I can find showers at pools/running tap at park, power and toilets at library and it's all in a 1km~ radius :')

      Thanks for chiming in

  • +2

    couchsurfing.com ?

Should have read the thread. See it's already mentioned but when I was active on that site I would have taken in a needy local.

    • +2

Thanks mate, in my normal circumstances so would I! But it definitely seemed (when I looked around it) to be much more catered to people wanting to see/do new things while traveling.. or meet new people.

Normally that would be fine but this feels like a situation where I want my own space and can reflect.

Either way, my options have broadened alot now and I'm researching the final choice tonight in the hotel I just got to!

.. hotel with 4 stars and no free wifi?!? What is this!

      • +2

Glad you'll be comfortable tonight dfaktz.
        No wifi! 😖

        • +2

Haha, might need more of those $1 Kogan packs.

        • @BagIt: they have been so goddamn useful!

      • I've read all your posts… it just doesn't make sense. First thing you're sleeping in your car, don't want to get a place to sleep. Looking a tents and couch surfing and next minute you're in a 4 star hotel? Surely if you were wise you'd find something more economic and in your price range?

        • Hindsight is 20/20 and I needed a proper refreshing night — I also do now own all the camp material needed.

  • +8

Thorton82… I'm not sure that this is the perfect timing for 'tough love'. People respond to their circumstances in different ways. There's no 'correct' way. Life and people's life situations can be fragile. We're lucky that we live in a society that can afford to give a damn. We're not in a war, we don't have real poverty in our communities ie: we have access to services that can help. I personally feel honored that dfaktz has felt safe and supported enough to continue to let us know how he's doing. Personally, knowing others' circumstances provide me with an opportunity to give a damn….

  • +6

OP I hope Centrelink have been helpful - you mentioned DV above, give 1-800-RESPECT a call, it's a national DV service and they should be able to direct you to temporary emergency accommodation, and surely the police have the number of a community social worker who can give you a hand too? The social workers are particularly good at knowing which accommodation to steer clear of too.

  • +15

On a more general note, I hope everyone realises that people just like OP are the homeless people we demonise as lazy and 'wouldn't be homeless if they really tried' or just 'tried hard enough to get a job'. Many just like OP can't work remotely and are absolutely stuck. Nobody is born living on the street, they start as the classmate you went to school with

    • +6

Wise words, I think sadly I have been guilty of this aswell in the past.
Well, I guess this is one way to have your eyes opened.

I'll just paste a comment I made straight from a PM to someone that offered help or an unbiased ear to talk to.
"Do not worry about trying to help me out, even if you were in Perth I wouldn't rightfully take it, atleast I have a car, some funds, some continuity to things — there are people out there with just a trolley full of clothes that has no car to huddle up in when the temp drops (etc)."

Thanks and have a good one yourself!

  • +3
    • :)

  • +3

OP, do you have family who can transfer you money? either way, your posts are well mild mannered and calmy written, for someone who is going through a very traumatic experience, well done! i havent read the entire thread, but if you rent in a share house, or those student accommodation houses with like 15 bedrooms, that would work out to be cheap accommodation too?

    • I'm glad the thread is interesting to you, it's hard for me to realise why but I'm not a third party to it and on a normal day can get caught in YouTube recommended videos till I realise the sun's coming up. heh.

You are indeed correct, I could get extra funds if I wanted and I do still have money and an income (albiet one that is getting smaller since I'm doing less work).

So, yeah, I will be finding a new place and now I 'think' I have things sorted to achieve that, you gotta remember this thread has evolved and changed in needs from the start, never knew just how much shock I was in.. never knew I would be in my car for so long, be posting here for so long or (definitely) have a positive outlook on things thanks to OZB.

  • +2

Just love ozbargain, always something to read that's unusual, enriching and good to see members all giving advice.

    Hey OP,

Rather than Domino's, check out foodbank. A lot of front line not for profits have daily deliveries of bread, milk, fruit and vegetables etc that you can collect for free.

Most dont care if you are a client or not to take a bit.
    https://www.foodbank.org.au/need-help/individuals/

    • The only reason I would swap is health wise (hard to make a nice sandwich set for the day ahead in my car) I wouldn't take food meant for the people without a few bucks to rub together.

I'll call them and see if they can offer a kitchen or something for this.

      Thanking you!

  • +1

    Hi dfakz,

I was just checking out orange sky laundry they operate in Perth now they offer a free laundry service (awesome). I couldn't find out where but the people at tranby http://www.unitingcarewest.org.au/services/homelessness/tran… should be able to hook you up with all kinds of services.

I know you probably think there are all people who need services more than you but I know from personal experience that it is so much easier to get someone on the right track a week out of home than trying to pick up the pieces a month down the track. If you feel guilty about using services- don't- things like d.v. Are exactly the reason why people donate and I know you will give double back once you are back on your feet.

Hope you have a good sleep and a productive day tomorrow

    • Thankyou, people are sure throwing resources at me today — thanks so much for your time. I'm on the edge of running out of daily closet wear so, a service like that is something I could definitely use.

And yeah, I had an amazing sleep heh, my legs were a little shakey getting up, they must have got shorter sleeping all packed up in the car. It was a good refresh.

      As normal, appreciated muchly.

      • Great to hear about your computer. Another place for a meal shower and referrals is st pats in Fremantle.
        http://stpats.com.au/services/meals/

They have free meals 365 days a year according to the website. Also google Ruah Perth similar services. Make sure you are looking after yourself and taking any help that comes your way.

  • Hi Dfkatz,

You said on your other thread that you're around Fremantle/Melville. Are you familiar with Murdoch at all? During the day most of the campus is open to anyone (eg. showers in the gym), and visitors can get a log-in to use the computers for free, you could ask IT (in the library) if there are computers you can use with the autoCAD software you need.

The Murdoch library has a section that is open 24 hours, but you need a card to get in after hours (after 11pm weekdays, 5pm weekends). Many times I have lost my card and you can get in by knocking (it's just students after hours). The after hours section has showers, microwaves, water, and it's not totally unusual to find someone napping there.

Be careful with parking though - it costs between 8am-4.15pm.

Good luck, I hope you get your computer back and housing back on track soon!

    • Oh, this is truely helpful, I didn't know Murdoch was so open.. especially since it's the closest..
I used to go to ECU and it's locked up a hell of a lot more than that, though the one thing I could still do is knock late at night, students NEVER check each other.

I will go down to Murdoch soon just to check things out.

      Thanks :)

    Are you male or female?
It does make a difference to the availability of crisis accommodation.

    • +7

the fact that is true is sad

    • +1

Male and agree with the guy above me :(

  • What's wrong with sleeping in your car? Put down your back seats and fit a flat mattress to the boot to the back seat.

As for the showers. Join a gym for like 10-15$ a week. Park your car and bus to public areas to charge your electronics. Get a battery bank if possible?

    Profit??

    • Can't argue with this! ..as it's basically, with some detail changes, what I have indeed done so far heh

      • -7

        Buddy, he was joking.

        • I've re-read it and the only part I feel he was joking was the 'Profit?' long standing meme..
If he is joking I need to seriously re-calibrate my sarcasm meter.

        • +1

          @dfaktz:

I had to do this for a couple of days and foundzero problem!

        • @aerona: yeah I didn't think you were joking, not sure what thornton82's problem with me is.

To give you a proper answer now, yeah that's basically what I've been doing mate :)

          Thanks!

        • @dfaktz:

If you're a university student. I would highly recommend getting a van lol

  • hope the OP hasn't topped himself yet! stay strong OP!

    • No, not that morbid yet, maybe if I woke up in.an ice bath missing organs and all my belongings.
      Thanks.

  • +10

Hello second family. I had an extremely good sleep in the hotel, so much so that my legs felt weird when I got up because they've been packed in for the last week every night.

…And the cops said they confirmed my laptop and intuos tab, going to drive down on checkout and grab it :))

More descriptions of things ATM are above, not much time this morning, wanna catch up on some backlogged work and some other things.

What a journey this is, you all have been so kind, I'm out of thanks to give, any more and the word will lose its meaning.

It's a good sign… Things are looking up.
          Today is a good dsy.

        • +1

@MishyMoo: a great dsy indeed, I am so happy they didn't harm my laptop, there's so much stuff on it. I can report that they tried the password a mere 14 times, sadly I can't export what the tries were.

Sadly.. they broke my intuos pro tab, they quite obviously didn't know what it was as theirs weird marks all over it, I guess I can be a little dodgey and send it to intuos as 'dropped'.

Bloody hell! That's some great turn of luck, not often you hear about stolen goods being retrieved.

I for one, am really glad MishyMoo has replied to this because it saves me the typing on my phone as to the gratitude I feel.

I would be very thankful if you could try and see. I really really do not want to be a burden or liability on anyone else so, a simple no will suffice — only if they are genuinely happy to have someone there. Happy to chip in $$ and hell, I'll tent in the backyard to stay out of their way.

Thanks for asking and taking the time, feel free to PM or reply here, whatever is more comfortable for you.

Footnote: I really must stress that this should be an offer and not a problem or anything that inconveniences them. A simple no will be fine :)

      • Well that went nowhere heh

Let me know if you are still keen.

Im amazed at all this generosity. When i was up shit creek i remember resorting to a diet of 2 minute noodles and my room that i rented w a mate was late on rent w nothing in my furnished room except my pc and like 3 changes of clothes. I eventually got through it by working my absolute butt off but damm i would have killed to have some empathy n jus ppl having a chat like they are here.. good luck w everything mate and pass it forward one day when you have things figured. :)

    • +1

Ow, yeah, that sucks to hear about mate, glad it sounds like you are out of that — luckily situations like this for me have been rare and when occured, I've been with either friends or family for no cost at all. (Btw i'd kill for my own room with a PC and some clothes hahah)

Don't worry, I'm a firm believer in paying it forward and normally already am, just on the subject of technology security I help about 3 communities online at 8-12 hrs a week and I'm a part of a big brother program.

I'm void of religion and identify as agnostic if I must, but I have a very strong (weird) sense that karma or just life in general seems to balance things out.

Hey dude you could offer to buy jetstar vouchers (the $25 ones for $10) and then book yourself into a hostel ?!.

    • I'm sure they wouldn't stack? And at that type of discount I could probably go better than hostel, do you have a link to the deal mate?

      • I recently put an ad on gumtree offering $10 for $25 vouchers and got a heap of responses, I reckon you could probably go to $7.50 though and still get replies. As for stacking I'm pretty sure they don't, my thoughts were that you could get a $25 dorm room for $10 a night, maybe less if you could find people selling them cheaper.

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/219579

Some people receive them after booking flights with jetstar, it seems though that most go unused.

Well that was a read! What a nightmare, but I must say it's pretty insane how unprepared he was and finding out it had happened MULTIPLE times before haha.

It is nice what OzB can do in times of need though, I've said it a couple times here now but on a comparison, i feel people get a better response here than Reddit or even whirlpool (for Aussies of course).

Thanks for the kind words :) have a good weekend mate.

  • just saw your post now, if you haven't found a place yet OP, maybe have a look at this

So.. instead of updating everyone right now, I will tomorrow. You can stop reading here if that's the case :) This was a pretty crazy thread that has taken so many twists I feel like I'm the character in a book(posting everything here probably helps that).. in the spirit of it all I will write not the start but most likely the end of the final update here for everyone today.

I am currently driving a luxury boat (making use of my commercial maritime license (or class 2)) into the sunset heading to Rottnest (a very popular island off Perth) with of course, a wonderful bed to sleep in and fresh food to indulge in on the boat. How did I get here? Well.. some pretty profound truths over the time and some crazy ones in the last couple days that I haven't said much here.

I am doing the write-up(s) in the spirit of all the subscribers, hope you all had an awesome weekend and from the bottom of my heart, truthfully thank you.

    • Very happy indeed that things work out for you! Lifts my spirit just to hear it. Look forward to your accounts. Have a good night :-)
