  • Many credit cards provide travel insurance policies for no additional charge if you use the credit card to purchase the travel. This is often the cheapest option.

    • Agree, real Ozbargainers have a multitude of no-fee Platinum/Black/Signature cards to choose from when booking a flight, in order to get the free travel insurance.

There's a fair amount of differences between those free ones vs the paid travel insurance.

The major difference is pre existing conditions.

Not going to blabber about this, but read the pds

      • I got stung by the "pre existing condition" clause.
Family member passed away while travelling, so I tried to claim fees for changing ticket return date.
It was not awarded. Ended up over 2 grand down.
However, I don't think it's a bad clause, I find it fair, but would be bad for those no knowing about it beforehand.

The free insurance with Visa card has worked on another occasion where I went to hospital in Thailand, and claimed it on return.

Another note, MUST file paperwork as fast as possible.
        Read the PDS!

Take all insurance numbers and details with you while travelling. Can help make things happen a lot faster in Hospital check-in.

  • Can I say that WWS is much cheaper

    Post Travel Insurance

I usually get the insurance before travelling, does it work out cheaper getting it post travelling ?

    • Maybe one can travel post insuring oneself…

There's a MASSIVE difference between free credit card insurance and proper travel insurance. I'd never go to the USA, for instance, with just the cc insurance

    • Can you elaborate? I've checked the policies and besides the higher excess fee I couldn't see much difference.

For reference, I compared anz credit card travel insurance.

  • Does anyone have any experience with this travel insurance? I actually need to buy an annual family plan.

  • This company is often mentioned as a go-to for competitive travel insurance: https://www.priceline.com.au/priceline-protects

  • Does anyone know of a company that offers insurance to an area that DFAT says "Do Not Travel"?

Last I checked, medibank did cover "Do Not Travel" areas. However, they wouldn't cover you for any medical issues that arise from certain activities that would be more common in said areas such as terrorism related injuries.
Always confirm before you buy though
