    This seems really cheap!
Do they ever have deals for New York? Looking for May 2018, wondering when is a good time to buy? Also , there are 8 of us, do they ever do deals for groups?

    • +2

I normally don't recommend travel agents but for large groups with long lead times you may get a good deal. Obviously holding out could get you a better one. Usually see great deals within 3 months of departure. Subscribe to the numerous travel sites who pull airfare info. Once booked don't come back to ozbargain until after your trip ;)

Whenever I see these LA deals I usually do a little bit of New York research on the side. Around this time is usually the best time to buy if you're heading over for their summer. Last year I managed to score direct flights Brisbane to New York via la with virgin for 1000aud return

I've also booked a cheap LA flight when there was no New York deals and went to a American airliner website (southwest etc) and got there that way.

      So there are always options.

you can fly in their premium economy for $1300 Syd-Los

    • True, but their premium economy is not like other airlines (eg Air NZ). In fact they don't even call it premium economy. It is called space+, and you get a bit more legroom, and priority boarding, but that's about it. Virgin don't fly the Dreamliner either. Last week I booked on United over Virgin, mainly because it is a Dreamliner - they are the new planes that fly lower, quieter, less change in cabin pressure. Supposed to be nicer. United also have a premium economy that is not really premium economy. It is called Economy Plus. Economy plus seating provides you with five inches (12.7 centimetres) of extra legroom and is located at the front of the economy cabin, which makes the flight more comfortable. The seats are the same width (18 inches or 45.7 centimetres) as the standard economy. It is kind of a rip off though, at US$229 per person per direction.

I've been on the United dreamliner and the supposed benefits aren't enough to overcome the terrible United product. Food, entertainment, hosties… all terrible

        • Thanks negger, guessing you haven't been updated on your rights as a customer with United… prepare to be dragged off :)

      • Virgin do have a premium economy product and it is much better. $1300 seems ridiculously cheap for it.
United, Delta and Virgin all also have an extra space economy product which has more legroom but the same economy seats. These extra space seats also typically come with extra perks like priority checkin, first meal preference and in the case of Virgin noise cancelling headphones on the international planes.

Keep in mind that while United does use the 787 their seats are not as wide as the one on Virgin or Delta. Yes it is only about 3cm difference but you really feel it.
When I was sitting in the aisle, I kept on getting my arm bumped and had to walk a little on the side through the aisle not to bump people. And I am not a big guy.

I do agree that i felt a lot less jet lagged on the 787.

Virgin do have a premium economy product, the previous one was reasonable (flown it a few times) but the new one is supposed to be better.

Having flown a number of Dreamliner flights, I think the lack of service and the worst hard product outweigh the benefits.

How do I make use of these deals if I want to also travel to other US cities? Would 2 singles be of similar price?

    • +2

Singles? As in instead of return? That's almost always way more expensive. You'd pay more than $800 one way. Just use LA or Vegas as your base and then fly to and from there domestically.

    • Look for round trips through their search - last year I was able to add on a flight to Seattle return for nothing (actually less than the original cost of the ticket)

Bugger! I wanted to go in end of October to Vegas.

Try for Virgin flights, at least on the flight across the Pacific.

Delta is rubbish across the Pacific. 10 across 777 vs 9 across at Virgin.

    • just curious, what makes Delta rubbish? (have never tried them before)

      • +2

As mentioned Delta has 10 seats per row which means tighter seats vs. 9-abreast configuration with Virgin.

Which is ironic because Virgin is meant to be tighter.

        • lol liking the pun..

        • Thanks, didnt understand that 10 across meant 10 (seats) across

    • +1

Delta uses 9 across 777 same as Virgin on the transpacific. You must be thinking of American Airlines who yes use 10 across.
Both Delta and Virgin have 9 across which gives you a wider seat which i feel is important for long flights.
American and United have significantly less width and so you end up getting your arm bumped if you are sitting in the aisle.

  • i wish i could get to rome this july for 1000aud return

    • I would not want to go to Rome (or anywhere in Europe) in July/August even for $500 return.

Not only is it stinking hot, it's also bloody freaking crowded.

      • -1

it's all about the beach babes in italy and the mediterranean bro

    • Rome airport is freaking horrible.

I flew out of there once and it was chaos, no one stayed in lines, us Aussies (my travel companions and some other people travelling back to Sydney) were waiting patiently in line and all of these crazy locals were pushing/jostling/elbowing men, women and children. It was almost a stampede! Maybe it's better flying in, but flying out was my worst airport experience ever.

Recommend flying in/out somewhere else and perhaps taking a train.

      • Or like Bali airport go extremely early to accommodate the inevitable queues!

      not sure if that helps…

  • I'm in Europe right now via another IWTF bargain, got another trip coming up in September, and now booking this one… cheers ;)

  • Is there a way to get this price with points?

    • no because this price is in dollars, not points ;)

      • did you mean to say that tickets for this particular journey cannot be purchased using points?

        • i'm sure you can buy those tickets using points, but they'll be XXXX points rather than $XXX

so no, you can't get that price with points… you can get that journey, but not that price ;)

  • I cant find any of these prices for august :(
