[Price Error] Mac Pro at Qantas Store for 93K points, or 5K points + $520

Moved to Forum: Original Link

A friend brought this to my attention on Sunday morning, but you can get the last generation Mac Pro for 93,000 points (using barometer for 4230 points for $25 Myer gift card, that's only about $549. If you use the Points + Pay slider to reduce the points to 5,000, you only have to pay $520. Not sure if it's a mistake or just clearance, but I ordered one Sunday. Hasn't shipped yet, but should in the next day or so.

Price error (moved to forums): Emails are now coming through confirming the price error. As compensation Qantas are providing 2000 points and a 20% discount code for those who unsuccessfully ordered.

The T&C are not in our favour…

9.1 Order cancellation by the Member:
    a) Once placed, orders cannot be amended or cancelled by the Member.
9.2 Changes to orders by Qantas:
    a) Qantas reserves the right to refuse to provide any Retail Reward, terminate, remove or edit content or cancel orders (or part thereof) at Qantas’ discretion at any time. Without limiting the operation of any other Terms herein, Qantas will not be held liable for loss or damage arising from the exercise of these rights.
    b) If Qantas cancels an order (or part thereof) a Frequent Flyer Service Centre representative will contact the Member and explain the reason for the cancellation.
    c) If Qantas cancels an order (or part thereof) the Member will be provided with a full refund for the order (or that part). Subject to the reason for the cancellation, Qantas may offer the Member a substitute Retail Reward of equal value instead of providing a refund. The Member may decline to accept substitute.

9.1 isn't enforced, I ordered two using points by mistake, I got it cancelled via live chat saying I wanted to use points+pay. They did cancel it for me, but by that time it was out of stock.

  • +1

If they process one order then its a pretty good argument that they should process them all? Will be interested to hear as soon as someone receives one at their doorstep.

    • +2

I think it will be an 'all or nothing' situation, my bet is this deal won't go through. Hence our appreciatiation of OP sharing this deal which pretty much made it impossible for him to receive his order from the weekend.

  • +1

Ordered just before others mentioned the deal expired. It shows up under Points Activity as an order but I haven't received an email.
Also, those 'rumours' around whether or not Qantas will honour the deal, that's always a discussion point within every company where pricing errors are made. In this case, since there's not a lot of margin in Apple products, it would truly surprise me if they would honour it. Also, it's unlikely they would sit on a stack on these machines just in case someone orders one (my guess is they haven't sold a single one of these at the normal price/points rate) - they're likely to be dropshipped from somewhere. Every company makes mistakes, if they end up refunding us (in a timely fashion) it's really not going to damage their overall reputation.

Edit: on the product page, under Delivery, it actually says they use a 3rd party: "This product will be delivered from a third party".

[Armchair Lawyer Mode] There is clearly a contract in place as there is Offer, Acceptance, and Consideration. Qantas can of course break the Contract. It is then up to individuals to decide if they want to test if Qantas is allowed to break the contract (based on the T&C or other arguments) or if not what the remedy would be. I guess you would need to take Qantas to the Small Claims Court for determination.[/Armchair Lawyer Mode]

    • +1

There are no clearly defined internet pricing error laws in Australia, so good luck with that.

      • Taking payment is acceptance. Not sure how companies get away with cancelling and refunding price errors. I know Officeworks lie and say it's due to no stock.

        • I'd suggest that taking the payment covers "Consideration". Where I'd argue that "Acceptance" is made from Qantas to the "Offer", is in the E-Mail saying "Your Qantas Store order is confirmed". I would suggest it would be a different if the E-Mail said "Your Qantas Store order is being reviewed" Anyway, unless someone is willing to test the arguments (for and against) in a court it is all speculation….

Here is a good read on the topic from the POV of protecting On Line Companies in these transactions - https://www.out-law.com/en/topics/tmt--sourcing/e-commerce/h…

        • @jmone: You're all trying to argue that there's a contract in place, assuming that Qantas would be arguing otherwise.

It might be that Qantas consider that there is a contract in place, but one of its terms is that they can cancel an order.

        • @Hessian Sack:
I'm sure the T&Cs would be part of their argument if they cancel, but at the end of the day unless someone could be bothered testing all the arguments in a court…. it is all just a discussion.

        • @Hessian Sack:

Good point, I hadn't thought of it that way.

    • +1

good luck trying to get more than what you paid, seeing as that is the maximum damage you could demonstrate.

Too much paper work for your dad to do. He is already busy enough policing bicycle riders without a bell.

    • +10

Poor ozbargain form. Already submitting to defeat and asking for a refund. Whatever happen to the true ozbargainer grits and going to the ACCC and organizing class action law suits

    • +13

Whhhhyyyy??? Just leave it and let them send the item to us

    • +8

She didn't even say what their plans were with the existing orders. Wow what are you doing…

Was there any doubt that it was anything other than a genuine error?

    • +7

wow whoever twitter that was is epic fail

    • +10

Signed up to OzB just to say I've f@@ked you guys up. Classy

Lol signed up and disabled user now

      Worst than broden

This will go down in ozbargain history

      • lol, even the mods think what that person did was unacceptable in the spirit of OzBargain

      • Seems pretty valid to me. No one will receive this.

        • If you read the link you would know that it's not based on your opinion of what you personally should be allowed neg, but rather the voting rules for the community of this website.

Now if people had cancellation emails or refunds - then there is an issue with the bargain. At this point it's not confirmed. When purchasing it I was 99.99999% sure I wouldn't receive it yet I upvoted it anyway - as until it's confirmed a price error, it's not actually a price error. This also goes for the numpty on the other page who contacted the Qantas twitter PR team asking them about something that isn't even their departments job.

  • +3

I think that this is a bit different that other pricing errors due to the fact that FF points are involved in the transaction.

Qantas put a worth on their points as when it comes to purchasing products from the store - you can argue that the RRP value for products make all the products different values - so why does this Mac Pro get different treatment.

    • +2

Are you trying to make yourself feel better and upping your chances of getting it honoured?

      • +4

They're making me feel better. :)

      • +1

You have to hold hope close to your heart.

  • +1

Don't know why people bother posting obvious pricing errors onto ozbargain. It basically just ensures that no orders will get honoured.

    • +3

Sometimes you get compensation in credits/points/discounts… or once in a blue moon it gets honoured

    • +3

Gotta be in it to win it.

      • Yes I agree, they are quite "in it" regardless if they post it on ozbargain or not. Once they do they are a lot less in it

  • +1

    Following. Good luck ozbargain!

  • +6

We really need some sort of guideline for these posts.

For the OP - well what I'd do anyway…
    1. Wait for the item to be shipped before publishing the offer.

    For everyone else -
    1. Don't buy unless your willing to lose the money for a few days while we see what happens.
    2. Don't be disappointed when you don't get it, getting anything is pretty much a bonus.
    3. Don't contact support to ask questions (bring it to their attention).
    4. Don't try and get a refund before it's been cancelled.

Yeah, I jumped on it fully expecting it to be cancelled, just in case, maybe we'll get a gift card or some points or something, really just to be a part of it all haha.

Sometimes I've got the item from a pricing error, maybe it wasn't an error, I have got some Kogan vouchers in the past etc, it's all good, no expectations.

    • -1

How do you lose money for a few days???

      • +1

I mean lose access to the money, this morning I had an extra $520 available funds, now it's in the process of being transferred to Qantas. If they don't honour it I'll get it back. I'm saying if you have some bills or need to put food on the table tonight and it's your last $520 maybe give it a miss.

        • -2

          Have better money planning.

        • +7

If you only have $520 to your name you should not be on OzBargain…

        • +2

          @Turd: Get better English learning.

        • @thatguyfromthatplace: Got any deals on that?

        • @Turd:

          Udemy :P

    • +2

Let us dream a bit further. Let's put things in the realm of dreams. 😂😂😂

  • +4

The way I see it that they will process the order as they have updated their website and made the item no longer available. If they had intend on cancelling the orders with the pricing error, then the stock would remain in the system and we would have received our cancellation emails. May be they are consulting their commercial lawyers before they send such emails due to the potential claims….

That is just my 2 cents worth….

    • +16

      Ozbtimist!

      • +1

Doesn't mean they can't fulfill the orders!

      • +1

Yea. Definitely needs an uppercut. If I can't have one then no one can mentality.

  • Who do Qantas normally ship their store items with, anyone have experience with this care to chime in?

    • Last time I used it was StarTrack.. was also a Apple product.

      • Thanks..

I've strangely received a "Couriers Please" tracking email but I haven't a clue who from.
        Fingers crossed!

        • Whats the tracking say?

        • +4

          @Turd:

          Not possible to make delivery.

          @bozbargain: Sounds like a scam

        • +11

@Turd: I just got my tracking notification, it's coming via Nigeria strangely. I just need to deposit $4,000 and they will dispatch to me immediately. Transferring cash now.

@Turd: I should have made my joke post clearer, like F-22 above.

          @bozbargain:

          I got it ;-)

  • Looks like the frequent flyer web logins have been deactivated on all their portals. Mobile login is still going through.

    • +2

Logging in fine on my end using Chrome on a desktop.

      • Logging in fine on IE/Edge. Order still shown as 'in process'.

  • I think I might regret buying this if it does get shipped. Reading up after purchasing I released it is pretty old hardware and was probably not worth my hard earned qantas points.

    • I'll buy it off you!

      • I might end up selling. Will go to the classified section if it does ship. Just that I will miss my 5k points made from my domestic flights.

        • +1

Sell it and use the profits to cover the annual fee of a credit card with like a 50,000 point bonus.

    • +1

Just sell it, then. People pay a lot for Macs, for whatever reason. MacBook Pro, I kind of get. For $4899 you could build a ripper of a Hackintosh.

    • +3

I'll give you $600 for it.

    • hardware such as this one can be used for at least 5-8 years… read on the performance overview, the hardware can feed into 5 4K screens on the fly. The data transfer speed, graphics card, memory, everything is top notch. $500 change for something like this is a steal… and maybe thats why this may never eventuate.

I can imagine a Qantas rep reading all these comments and going.. nah, you guys messed it by sharing here. Forget the order and get back to your desktops

      :(

  • +1

Saw it in the morning, didn't get one, didn't realise it's RRP $4899, could've potentially profit some $$

  • +1

I don't believe I will receive the order but at least hope there will be some sort of free QF points as compensation for not honouring the order.

  • +3

Kinda feels like Qantas is waiting til late at night to cancel so less heat. I'd be really disappointed from a "premium" airline though.

    • +2

can we all just tweet qantas and thank them for sending us these at such a great price, then everyone else will complain and qantas will have to honour the deal!

      • +1

No more tweeting Qantas! No more interactions at all for that matter! We need to claim ignorance! Ignorance!

        • +1

I'm sure Qantas have read the comments here already and Harvey has already passed on the info that they are dealing with a bunch of.professoonals.

  • Anyone had an update?

    • +11

      No news is good news

    • +1

I'd hate to be that person who adjusted that error pricing. Imagine what he/she is going through at the moment.

  • -5

Incase you are wonder media outlets are already on to this story and putting something together. Channel 9 has been in touch with Qantas about this error for a statement.

    • Source?

      • My friend works for Channel 9 and gave him the tip this morning.

        • Not sure why you would want to make a big deal (no pun intended) out of it.

        • @ronnknee: As he purchased one this morning as well. Said Media pressure will push Qantas to possibly honour this deal or suffer a bad PR nightmare and losses.

        • +1

          @bellevuehill: … That's not nice.

        • @ronnknee: Why not? as stated in this thread if at least 500 - 1000 people took up this offer then potentially that's a massive loss for Qantas and a PR disaster.

        • +6

@bellevuehill: Well yea, I don't doubt that would happen. Just that it's pretty clear to all of us that it's a genuine price error. As much as I would like my orders to be honoured, I don't think it should go as far as getting the media involved.

The right attitude should be hoping for the best and if it gets honoured then happy days; otherwise, oh well, worth a try.
