[Price Error] Mac Pro at Qantas Store for 93K points, or 5K points + $520

Moved to Forum: Original Link

A friend brought this to my attention on Sunday morning, but you can get the last generation Mac Pro for 93,000 points (using barometer for 4230 points for $25 Myer gift card, that's only about $549. If you use the Points + Pay slider to reduce the points to 5,000, you only have to pay $520. Not sure if it's a mistake or just clearance, but I ordered one Sunday. Hasn't shipped yet, but should in the next day or so.

Price error (moved to forums): Emails are now coming through confirming the price error. As compensation Qantas are providing 2000 points and a 20% discount code for those who unsuccessfully ordered.

Some fkr has to always ruin it for us all, I was getting ready to open my own mac store with 25 I ordered

      • poorperty!

        • That's what the rich say

  • +2

The points+pay price is now 5000points+$4864.89 - grossly expensive, but seems close to what Apple would charge.

Are QANTAS going to honour the deal and take a $4,300 loss for every professional OzBargainer? Magic 8-ball says it isn't looking good…

  • My order is still "In Process". Let's see how it goes. But I do hope they accept this error. 😂

  • +2

Will this be the day that oz bargain bankrupts a major airline?

  • +1

Its obviously a mistake. Sleep well.

    • Is it obviously? I had no idea the price of a mac pro was till after I bought it because I had spare points to use.

    • Not obviously a mistake - the value of a qantas point is fluid, it is not an official currency and as far as anyone is concerned the value of the 5000 points used in this deal equates to rrp of the item if bought in AUD

      • This 'deal' would only make sense if the value of a Qantas FF point was $1.

Their value might be fluid, but a point has never been worth one whole Aussie dollar.

        • There is no way to prove exactly what a point is worth because they are not redeamable for cash - every transaction on their store has different value for points.

This deal the points where worth $3500

  • +5

Better chance if they just processed the orders without anyone contacting them about it. As above, absolutely rookie error if you contact the company about this.

    • +1

We need a premium OzBargain section with an IQ check and signed NDA.

  • Very curious to see if this goes through

  • If you bought more than one, I wouldn't mind buying the other off you… message me if it goes through

    • +1

hahaha I'm sure you'd get at least 20% off the rrp :)

  • +4

I'm the friend who discovered this via my bro-in-law early Sunday morn. It's been up for quite a while and only shutdown shortly after this OzBargain post went up. Whether it's honoured or not will ultimately come down to how much money they’ve lost vs brand degradation.

    • +1

      ozbargain class action!

    • How come you didn't post the deal?

      • +2

Waiting to see if it was real before posting it up to be Ozbargained (ie wait til his has been shipped before letting everyone in on the deal!)

    • +3

I bet you are pissed they posted it before you guys got shipping notification.

    • +1

I bought two on Saturday night. It was known before Sunday morning.

Just spoke to AJ himself, said only orders before 1004am will be honoured.

He was in the truck going to see his mate Gerry to pick up some more for stock.

    • -1

      Who's AJ?

      • CEO of Qantas

      • Alan Joyce. CEO of Qantas

      • +1

        jv's father

  • -7

    Shipped! Thanks OP!

    • What time did you place your order?

    • Where did you get a shipped notification? I know people who ordered yesterday that are still IN PROCESS.

    • +18

      Don't feed the trolls.

  • +1

Going by all the listings on ebay I'd say several people have already scored this deal.

    • +1
      • +3

LOL people take picture of the computer screen and use that as the image..

        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MAC-PRO-3-5Ghz-6-CORE-PROCESSOR-/…

        • +1

i laugh at at on facebook, on eBay its just sad.

        • +3

That listing description has actually been directly copied from the Qantas website. They've copied over some HTML code and there's the red and grey Qantas website bar running through it.

          Oh Lordy…

        • @mpratty10: rekt!!

    • +1

This is a good point. Although all those listings have no pics and it looks like the description is copy/pasted from the Qantas page.

Makes you wonder if they're listing the product before their order from the FF store has actually been fulfilled. They may end up just as screwed over as OzBargainers.

      • 6 listed since the 9th of april, i assume the price error has been around for a few days.

      • Just cancelled listing, no issues. eBay wont care

        • +1

That pic is from the original unboxing in 2013, it's all over the web.

        • @hidalgo: haha rekt

        • @hidalgo: LOL

        • yes it does which was stolen from this link

    • +3

No one has these in stock/hand. They are all speculating, like property…

Before this ozb post there was only 1 listing..

  • -5

6000 clicks = likely 30 mil loss (assume each unit cost $ 5000)…I don't think they will honour this lol …fingers crossed

    • +7

6000 clicks does not equal 6000 purchases.

    • wtf?

They buy them wholesale for probably $~3000 and I'd say there was maybe 100 purchases. Most will contribute the $~500 meaning they're $2500 down on 100 purchases, so a lot less than you're talking about.

  • The deal page now says "NO LONGER AVAILABLE ON SITE" - well and truly Ozbargained!

    • +2

Hope someone grabbed a screenshot of the original deal for the People of OzBargain v QANTAS class action lawsuit

      • +1

My tax invoice says it costs me PTS 5000 + AUD $520

      • lol!

    • haha

  • Item isn't available anymore

    Even at 719k points

  • +1

If they honour the deal, QF's share price is gonna drop because they would make less profit.

    • +4

      Brb, shorting Qantas shares

    • +2

      Sell now!!!!!

      • Shares still up atm

        • Exactly - sell high, buy low

        • +4

It'll take several months for the news of this $30,000,000 loss to reach shareholders.
Also, not sure if it's legal to sell now, given we learned about this as part of our day jobs (as ozbargain professionals).
          Might come under inside trading.

        • +1

@idonotknowwhy: This is a public website. It is legal.

        • @Turd: In that case…
Cheers Op, just sold 10 Qantas shares!

        • @idonotknowwhy:

Hahaha the brokerage fee probably have eaten into your profit.

        • @idonotknowwhy: You're welcome to give me a call when a law suit comes your way ;)

  • They've fixed it. It has been revised to 700k points +

Likely cos it hit sites like this :(

Well done to anyone who got one, will be interesting to see if they try and pull it - there was offer and acceptance so i don't really see how they can shimmy out of the transaction.

The T&Cs allows Qantas to cancel any orders…

    • 9.2 Changes to orders by Qantas:
      a) Qantas reserves the right to refuse to provide any Retail Reward, terminate, remove or edit content or cancel orders (or part thereof) at Qantas’ discretion at any time. Without limiting the operation of any other Terms herein, Qantas will not be held liable for loss or damage arising from the exercise of these rights.
      b) If Qantas cancels an order (or part thereof) a Frequent Flyer Service Centre representative will contact the Member and explain the reason for the cancellation.
      c) If Qantas cancels an order (or part thereof) the Member will be provided with a full refund for the order (or that part). Subject to the reason for the cancellation, Qantas may offer the Member a substitute Retail Reward of equal value instead of providing a refund. The Member may decline to accept substitute.

      • +4

I'll accept a business class flight to London as my substitute, thanks Qantas!

      • +6

just turn your phone off, they can't cancel the order if they can't contact you!!

        • flawless logic here

        • +6

i've just shutdown power at the main board in my house so they can't get the cancellation info to me.

        • @F-22:
Keep an eye out for the postie.

        • @ms:
Delivering a cancellation in the mail rofl

        • @payton:
Never know. His power's turned off.

  • +4

I couldn't get an order in on time but finger cross for all the ozbargainer out there who has placed their order.

This is quite a deal and the most exciting thing for this tiresome Monday morning.

  • -4

Forgot about ozbargain but my "few" orders were placed on Saturday

  • to be honest, lets say 100 people ordered it, that's only $3500 (discount) per person. 50-80 First Class seat sell even less could cover that…..

    No big deal for qantas!!!

    • 248 likes on OP's post. I think it's safe to assume at least that many ppl placed an order.

    • It will be way more than 100 — I'm guessing around 500 — not considering the potential cost price (which usually isn't much less with Apple) that's at most $4300 lost on each unit sold; which is a little over $2m.

      • lol Qantas Accountants must be under the pump now

        • Few rumours floating around that whoever was responsible has been terminated. Another one that Qantas might actually honour purchases to avoid brand degradation.

        • @adroxx: sauce?

I have a feeling if they honor it, it will be on the news for sure

        • @adroxx:

          Legit or troll?

        • +1

@adroxx: Apple may not allow them to sell their products in that low price………

        • @adroxx:

Few rumours floating around that whoever was responsible has been terminated. Another one that Qantas might actually honour purchases to avoid brand degradation.

I think they would suffer more "brand degradation" for terminating someone for making a simple mistake, than they would for not honouring that mistake ;-)

        • @bb1228:

Why not? There's no official rate for points. They can value 5000 points to be $4500 if they like.

        • @bb1228: why not?

        • +2
        • +1

          @ronnknee:
          @Turd:

Competitors may complain to Apple…. For example, …. your pricing is “too low” and is hurting the market or their business.

        • @bb1228:

Again, there is no official rate for points. How would they determine if the price is too low or too high?

I mean for us, we unofficially value 1 point for 1 cent. In this case, 1 point could be worth 90 cents.

        • @ronnknee:

by sliding the point and pay bar to check the value change of every 1000pts,…..u will get a rough idea

        • +1

          @bb1228:

maybe it was a Qantas "Easter Egg" and we all found the bargain

  • Damn..

  • +4

Well the confirmation email says this:

    • Orders cannot be cancelled due to change of mind

Qantas can't 'change their mind' too then!

    • +2

They wouldn't be canceling for 'change of mind'. They will cancel due to error.

      • +2

If we make an error ordering they usually won't let us cancel too

        • You let us know how you get on with that argument :)

        • -1

@kwydjibo: Error of judgement. Plenty of people use that. lel brownwen

        • I can just imagine The Checkout saying this.
We should tip them off about it if we get screwed.
Was thinking of doing the same with the recent Uber Eats code and the unauthorized charges
