Herman Miller Aeron Chair (Old Model) - $1050 + Delivery @ Living Edge

160

NB: This is almost the same deal as posted - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/285703
There is no free shipping, so Sydney upper north shore metro was $80. Supposedly they unwrap and throw away the rubbish. The second chair was taken down the driveway unwrapped (we had the gate getting fixed, so they couldn't drive down). The first chair was dumped in a box on our front door (for 'free' shipping).
Not sure what the delivery prices are for the rest of Australia.

This is the old model. Size B with Arms are in stock. They do have > 10 chairs left (I guess they are canceled orders).
Size C may also be available in numbers < 10.

I bought a second one for my wife.

You have to call them (1300 132 154) and ask to order the chairs. I don't believe it's orderable online.

      Maybe five years ago.

        Only earlier this year: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/285703

Need to check your bargains dude.

        • OP already mentioned that one. What was the earliest before that?

        • Seems more like a once off sale to clear the old model than a regular occurrence.

Last regular sale at that price point was early 2014.

    • But without arms at that price, I think.

A lot of people are going to chime in and vouch for it. I've had this for 5 years now, and it hasn't failed on me. My rationale with it comes down to a few things:

      • Cheapest chair in that size, and depending on your body weight, will cost at least $100-$150, I would lean more to $150.
      • These chairs, again depending on your size, really only have a usage life of 1-2 years, especially if you got the faux leather plastic type, regardless, they all end up flaking badly, and also the tilt mechanism breaks, etc. Granted if you're a very skinny person and weigh nothing, they probably last a lot longer. But you still can't combat the wear on the material of these crappy chairs
      • The cushioning of these chairs also degrade overtime, till the point you have the frame wedged into your butt. Nice and comfortable…
      • I would rather have ONE chair for many years as opposed to going to ikea or officeworks every 1-2 years to pick out a new one, then have to deal with disposing the other one.
      • Aeron's have 12-13 years of warranty, that's enough to get a good use out of it.
      • It has really been known to last many years without much degrade in comfort, unless of course you abuse the crap out of it.
      • If you spend more than 5-6 hours a day on this chair, it's a worthy investment.
      • A lot of people also argue it's not that comfortable, obviously that's subjective and if it's not for you, the Herman Miller, or other brands may have one that suits your comfort level.

Yet phones are selling like hotcakes for $1400 and people upgrading yearly

      • -2

You have a valid point there.
I'd never spend 1k on an office chair but I'm also not one that spends 1k on a smartphone.
Funnily enough I'd take the hot cakes served daily at my desk for the life of the chair for 1k.

Bric: This is where you're wrong - you have your ass in front of monitor checking Ozbargain daily - doing that while sitting on proper chair is much more pleasant. Also you spend $200 for office chair, it breaks after 2-3 years, and then you repeat the process.

Why not spend a grand get a very comfy chair which will last you many many years?
PS: You won't believe the amount of chicks you get to pick up once you have this chair. Just tell them you have Herman Miller Aeron - they'll say 'take me home'

      disclaimer: result may vary.

    • Hmmm I was thinking the same too till one of the offices had one of these, yes it's very dear but makes a huge difference to your back and posture if you have to like me sit in front of a PC most of the time, well worth the investment. I've purchased a number of office chair and this should easily last me at least a good 10 years with the built quality.

    • That was my thinking before too about a lot of things, like luxury linen, mattresses, etc. But if you have tried it, it is very hard to go back to ordinary. I think it is worth spending a bit more if you are going to spend a lot of time in something.

    • 12 years in mine, still going strong. I used to spend 6-8 hrs a day in it for years, not so much anymore and it really helped with my back. I won't buy a Galaxy S8 because of cost and it definitely won't last 12 years.

In terms of cost per hours used, the chair is hands down great value. My partners cheaper $120 chair from office works lasted 3 years. There are probably chairs in the $500 range that are as good or nearly as good but I have no idea what they are.

  • I used one of these. It not much different to a chair half the price. If it's made in USA then it's worth the extra premium.

    • They are made in the USA comes with 10 or 12 year warranty from memory.

    • -1

I have the one that is half the price, it is quite good and in the showroom hard to tell apart. However now I also have a genuine Aeron as well and get extended use from both I can tell you there is a big difference.

The biggest difference is that the mesh on the alternatives isn't strung quite as tightly as the Aeron. At first the Aeron feels too hard, but after a while you realise in fact the others are too saggy.

Edit: also have a Mirra. Happy to take questions.

      • how is it compared to a leap?

and what are the difference between the sizes?

        where are the showrooms?

  • I am sitting on one right now. I had it for 5-6 years now. The plus side is that it still looks new. The mesh has not degraded at all, it is a very well made chair and I suspect it will last for quite a number of years. It is probably the best quality chair I have ever owned. The downside is as some people has said, it is comfortable but nothing to rave about.

  • my Herman Miller Aeron Chair at home was an amazing purchase many years ago, its still one of the best chairs I have in the house.
anyone who sits on it, loves it.

  • $1000 for a chair?
Sure, if it was a millionaire.

    • +5

You have to be a millionaire to have $1000? That doesn't add up.

  • If your budget is bit tight, you can buy a "replica" of the Aeron here.

    • +1

I think the only reason you would buy the Herman miller is because of the quality. Rather than spending $400 on a look a like. Spening $400 on a replica was my mistake. I should have spent the extra to get the real thing. I have gone through 2 cheap chairs in the last 4 years, meanwhile my herman miller at work is going on 7 years and still looks new.

  • I have an aeron and I don't think it's worth the price, just wait for the buro task chair to go on sale (which it frequently does)

    • Not directly comparable because it doesn't have a mesh seat. It looks like this one from Kogan might be ok.

  • +1

I liked the chair when I tried it but went for the Embody as it was far superior IMO
I have 6 screws on my lower back after a major surgery and I can sit for 8-10hours without discomfort. (obviously I get up from time to time but majority of it is in the chair)

    • +1

Yep I love the Embody too. Living Edge usually has a sale around the end of financial year and I picked one up then. One of my best investments.

  • These are some of the best office chairs you can buy. Personally I preferred the Mirra 2 over the aeron when I went to demo them. I recommend trying before buying.

  • Has it sold out? Can't find any old model Aeron.

  • +1

Does anyone have any experience of the Matt Blatt or Kogan mesh seat replicas - quality etc.?

I already have an Aeron in my office - 7 years old and still in as new condition, and a beautiful chair, very comfortable for extended use.

However I'm looking for a cheaper mesh seat for use in my home music studio when playing guitar (much better in a Brissy summer).

Obviously I would need to be able to remove the arms - I can check on this with the stores.

    • Does anyone have any experience of the Matt Blatt or Kogan mesh seat replicas - quality etc.?

      Rubbish

    • Replica Matt Blatt is very uncomfortable, prolonged sitting will hurt your butt and your back.

The Mesh is very hard, and the angle of the seat is not adjustable enough.

    • I had the Matt Blatt. Went through two of them.
First one, bolts to hold the arms were too short, the arm fell off, chipping my hardwood floor (big chip).
Called them up and they delivered the replacement chair to my neighbour (and didn't take the faulty one back).
Neighbour left it in his garage and let me collect it when I was around.

Went around bunnings, etc trying to find the right size bolts. no luck. Chair isn't all that comfortable without the arms, as you have this metal 'stalk' that ends up banging into you, denting the desk, as you turn around, etc.

Second chair may have been machined a bit differently, same size bolts, just held one arm firmly, the other arm was always wobbly loose. Bolts holding the back frame end up coming loose and needs tightening. The gas lift died after three years.

Had a $1200 'executive' leather chair, the base snapped due to metal fatigue. The chair had solid wood arms, etc and weighed quite a bit. Can't really find anybody to fix it.

Gone through several office works and ikea office chairs. Probably spent close to $3000 on various chairs for our upstairs and downstairs offices.

My wife's chairs do better - she is lighter and doesn't stress the chairs out as much.

I've used Aerons at three different offices, don't like the 'stiffness' of the Mirra base. There are probalby better chairs out there. I probably would have liked the Steelcase gesture more, but it's not as convenient to try and buy.

    • Thanks for your feedback guys!

Another of my bright ideas bites the dust!

More research required, obviously - however I guess that the phrase "you get what you pay for" applies especially in this area.

  • sold out?

I only see Mirra 2 task chairs for $1050

    • Mirra is good though, some prefer it.

      • have two Aerons already, was looking for a third

but yes - Mirra is also good

    • Mirra is pretty good. I got Mirra @ work and Aeron @ home.
I prefer the Mirra better after using both for a few years.
But it's really down to personal preference.

  • Stealcase leap is another good option for anyone looking. I've got one with arm and head rests for around 900.

    • where?

      • I went direct to the showroom in melbourne, may have showrroms in other states though.

  • https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/bankstown/office-chairs/herm… $150

If someone in Sydney is keen on a cheap second hand Mirra - there's one on gumtree (not my add)
