What makes an office chair carry a $1000 price tag?

    • +62

Once you try an Aeron, you'll wonder why you have been sitting on such a piece of shite all your life.

      • +18

As someone who spends 8+ hrs a day sitting on office chairs, I bought an Aeron by reading other glowing reviews. Let me say that this chair is high quality, however it is not the most comfortable chair at that price bracket. People should try sitting on different chairs before committing to a purchase. This chair commands such price because it is a classic, much like the Eames classic lounge which sells for $8000. e.g. https://livingedge.com.au/products/eames-classic-lounge-otto…

        • +7

Agreed. Lots of different chairs suit different body shapes and sizes.

EDIT: BTW I would never spend $1000+ on a chair online without trying it first.

        • -1

          Which chair is more comfortable?

        • +1

Agreed. I sat on their Aeron and didn't think it was their most comfortable. I walked away with an Embody instead, best chair I've sat in. Although, does cost a pretty penny.

        • @Velocita: my embody arrives next month!
          Pumped as!

        • +1

@ozy: Enjoy! Comfortable days ahead :)

        • @ml17: how do you determine if a piece of string is "long" or "short"?
Its all in the perspective. I spent $300 + on a good pair of noise cancelling headphones to use twice a year on 3000km flights. Worth every penny for the 8 hrs a year without tinnitus for the following week!

        • @pebee47: hahahaahhaha, thanks for the philosophical thought. I merely asked because overshopper stated, "however it is not the most comfortable chair at that price bracket", so I just wanted to hear their opinion on better chairs (and I guess, better bargains)

    • +21

I used to have your mind set when I was in my early 20s "WTF $1000 for a chair??"

When you are 30+ and sit in an office chair for 8 hours a day AND have chronic back problems you'll throw any amount of money for a comfortable chair.

Also they have a 12 year warranty, so will last longer than the piece of crap you get from officeworks.

      • +5

        ^^ This.

Also I have had mine for almost 4 years, I work from home and I game a lot. It has no signs at all of any sort of wear or damage. Prior to getting this I would spend $200 on a chair that would break after 2 - 3 years. Helped my back a lot too. 10/10, would recommend.

      • +2

speaking of which, my girlfriend's less than 3 year old chair is currently peeling apart and was never particularly good to begin with. $200 officeworks job. For $1k and something that'll easily last 5 times as long this looks like a good option.

I never cheap out on beds and office chairs, at work our workcover guy almost flipped his lid when they talked about dumping our $400-500 chairs (they're insanely good for the price too, very adjustable) because really one workcover claim on a back injury could cost more than all the chairs in the office put together.

      • +1

Cheers for the info.. Already 30+, bad back, 8 hours daily in a crap office chair (cheers, local government!).

I think my (at home) Ikea chair was around $200-$250 and it's pushing 5 years.. still good enough to not cause more issues than my work one!
Still, something to keep in mind if the chance presents itself.

        • +1

I'm in a similar situation to you. 32, worked in local government, back is starting to cause me moderate issues. I decided to invest in a good chair. Shopped / sat in various chairs, didn't find anything that I liked. Researched, found that a lot of people recommend the Aeron, but I liked Herman Miller's Embody instead. It's all down to the individual though.

      • +1

Have you tried a sitting/standing desk?

        • +1

This. Best investment you will make.

    • +5

I have had the graphite size c with arms for around 4-5 years now. They're a great chair. Whether they're worth $1000 or not depends on your mindset, but from my perspective:
      - They're very comfortable
      - They're extremely solid and well built
      - The mesh breathes very well (no more sweaty back)
      - They come with a 12 year warranty, but will probably last longer than that
      - The mesh backing means there is no cushion deflation or sagging, so the performance of the chair will not really degrade over time
      - They're very adjustable - not just height but also tilt range, tilt strength, arm position, back support.
      - I spend a lot of time in the chair and as the saying goes - spend your money where you spend your time.

I'd highly recommend trying the chair out before buying though. There are plenty of alternatives e.g. steelcase leap and there are also plenty of chairs which are probably good enough for a lot less money.

      • +1

where can you even buy a steelcase

        • Steelcase offices across Australia? They have dealers too.

    • +2

Anyone who spends their time in an office/behind a desk should have a good chair. It's not worth winding up with a bad back in ten years because you picked up that $99 chair from OfficeWorks. Most people would value having a good back at more than 1K.

      • +2

After sitting for 3 weeks on a $1400 humanscale chair that was customised to suit me by a professional installer I ended up with a sore back and am now very happily sitting on a far more comfortable $80 chair from officeworks with no back problems at all.

        • It could be dependent on age but vertebrae in your back continue to fuse until the mid/late twenties on some. If your vertebrae have fused in an "incorrect" fashion, sitting on a chair designed for otherwise might result in your spine resting in an uncomfortable manner. This could lead to back pain.

But maybe the chair just sucked – I don't know.

    • +14

More than $500 or 36% off is all that matters.

    • +42

It has been about 3 years since the last time this chair (new, not second hand) was this price. I thought (incorrectly?) the community would appreciate the heads up.

      • +1

And that was when we were parity with USD so to repeat price but with todays exchange rate it unbelieveable

    • +3

Bargain and Cheap do not necessarily go hand in hand. People are looking for a good deal, it doesn't have to be extremely inexpensive, just good for what it is.

  • +1

This a Superb chair at a Very low sale price. :)

    Edit:
Just see previous posts for the same chair:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/Herman+Miller+Aeron

    • +2

Note also those prices were back when the dollar was at parity.

  • +3

Is expensive but worth every dollar. I spend most of my time sitting on my butt or in bed. I invest in my chair and mattress because my health matters :) But I personally prefer the Mirra range. Aeron's tend to be cramped for my liking.

IIRC, there's 10-year warranty with HM.

I usually score mine off Gumtree/eBay. Entire family have them now.

    • I think it's actually 12 years warranty but great regardless. I have the Mirra 2 and prefer it over the Aeron as well but still a fantastic chair.

    • I like the old Mirra, the new Mirra is not as robust

    • +1

What sort of bed do you have if you don't mind me asking? I'm in the market for a bed and seems like you know your stuff!

      • +1

Yonks ago I and my girlfriend bought a Serta brand bed. Then imported from USofA.
Brilliant bed, firm but not hard, great lumbar support. (I've 3 herniated discs in lower back)
Then went off market here in Oz.
Now being re-invented, but don't know if the same goes for the quality.

        • Thanks for the heads up! I've also got back issues so will definitely consider the serta, cheers!

    • You managed to find a families worth of decent quality second hand Aeron? Better than my efforts, I've found none (for a big enough discount)

  • I agree, my workplace uses these chairs and they're great.

  • -4

We had some of these chairs in at work, and I hated them. I've had free chairs from Gumtree with better support.

    • +1

Did you try adjusting the lumbar support? lol

    • +6

I bet you slouch naturally then. People often dislike chairs that promote good posture and would rather a chair that allows them to slouch.

  • -1

we have similar looking chairs at work, they're comfortable at first but after sitting on them a while you'll notice they are slightly tilted back and put pressure on your hips causing discomfort

    • +7

Similar doesn't mean the same - the Aeron has a number of adjustments to suit your body.

  • +3

Given the low AUD at the moment, this is a fantastic price! Probably clearing stock as the new model is due soon, but a great bargain nonetheless. I've had mine for about 11 years, and I highly recommend this chair!

    • -3

What new model? The chair has remain basically the same since it was introduced in the mid 90's. The only major change in the last 10 years is the new lumbar support, and guess what, older chairs can be upgraded to the new supports. How many chairs can lay claim to that?

  • Best chairs I have ever sat on. I can only afford the Officework crud at home.

At work every desk has one.

  • +1

Worthy upgrade from the Buro Metro chair?

The chair is to big for me and i never feel completely comfortable; Does this chair suit smaller people? ;3

    • +1

There are three sizes and the small is not on sale :(

      • oh damn alright haha, thank you

  • I have one at work, very good chair and lots of adjustability, can recommend if you have the cash. I got a lightly used Steelcase Think for 150 from gumtree for home, and honestly for me in terms of comfort is 95% of the Aeron (which is much more adjustable, so may differ for others).

Honestly i massively regret using an ikea office chair for a year before that at home, put my back in bad shape. Ergonomic chairs are worth the money if you sit in them for so long.

  • +8

Purchased one from Living Edge a few years ago but the staff are not very helpful so you get ALDI service with Harrods department store prices.

  • +1

If your after a good 24/7 chair go here, http://www.kabseating.com.au/Category/24-hour-office-chairs .I am sure, it the same chair they use in the Queensland "000" call centres. but they are not cheap.

    • How adjustable are these? never mind found on the site

    • Nah this is the one you want.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1WxP4lnEDE

    • +1

I got my work to spring for a leather KAB controller chair and use and it's fantastic, built like a tank. Last year we got a Metro Buro for home and I think it's got very very good performance considering the price. Anyone compared the Buro and Miller?

  • This urged me to look at gumtree for Herman Miller chairs. There's a Mirra close to me for $400. Hmmm. Maybe I should try it out.

  • -6

    Looks like 600bucks too much

  • +2

ive had one for 5 years best investment ever

  • +2

My experience sitting on one of these for over 10 years at the workspace wasn't great. If you sit on the edge of the seat, they do more damage than good and require patience to setup correctly.

We were told they were made from recycled cola bottles

    • +2

I've never seen any ergonomics expert recommend that you sit on the edge of a seat. Doesn't matter how much you spend on a seat if you have poor posture or habits.

      • Totally agree. For me personally, I found myself sitting on the edge perhaps due to the shape of the seat base.

  • +2

Must be one hell of a chair.

  • I hate my chair, it is ruining my back and screws have fallen out of it over time, affecting the seatback and god, knows what else. It wasn't cheap either they retail at about $500 dollars each I think. I got this one off gumtree for $200 a few years ago and very unimpressed. Never buying a Schiavello chair again. Wish I could afford to drop 1k on a chair, I've heard good things about these Hartman Millers for years tbut I can't :(. Going to have to get an IKEA special I think.

    • Follow the top brands to see when a new model comes out. The afficionados will offer their "oldie but still goody" as they move onto the newer model

  • +1

I'm waiting for the Mirra 2 to go on sale.

  • +1

I was tossing up between this and the Steelcase Leap a couple of years ago, went with the leap and love it.

    • where to buy the steelcase?

      • I bought directly through stealcase, they have a showroom in Melbourne CBD, not sure about other states.

  • +1

Tfw a chair is worth more than you :'(

  • +2

Bought one three years ago and never regretted my decision. This coming from a massive scrooge as well.

When it comes to stuff I use for several hours daily (chairs, bed, shoes), I don't mind paying for quality.

  • +3

This is seriously cheap for what it normally sells for, and considering how low the AUD currently is.

5 years ago i bought this Herman Miller Aeron chair for around $1000 AUD from Living Edge.

And till this day, it's still in very good condition, no regrets.

    Arm bars don't tear apart.
    Gas lift still works.

People might thinking forking out a grand on a chair is insane.
But i spend 8 hours sleeping and 8 hours sitting down.

My health matters to me, so comfy mattress and chair is a must. w
It will eventually pay off if you use it for at least 10 years.

  • Accenture had a boardroom full of these. Best office chairs I've ever sat on.

    • They didn't give you one to sit on at your desk?

      • Lowly peons were lucky to get chairs to sit on.

    • yeah i've sat on the accenture brisbane boardroom chairs.. didn't know they were aeron's at the time but I remember being extremely impressed. i think i recall the communal desk area chairs being sub-par too. love the kitchen/view and everyone made me feel welcomed.

  • +1

Great price given the weak dollars. Got mine with arms for $878 exactly four years ago.. love it.

    • +1

Why would one get the chair with no arms?!

      • If you have a big desk or are in a small room (or both), the arms just get in the way.

      • chairs with no arms gives you better posture while sitting down.

      • +2

There was ergonomic consultant who came and did a presentation at our office and recommended we remove all arms attached to the chair. Because of the arm rests getting in the way, people have to sit further away from the desk resulting their arms further stretching.

I saw his point. But instead of removing them I lowered the rests so they situated underneath the desk..

      • +2

Armrests in a lot of cases encourage poor posture. Most ergonomic folk would recommend chairs without arm rests be used.

    • +3

Nice try, Mr Milk Crate salesman.

      • +2

Norco Milk crates are the best!

    • Investments can be classed in many ways, physical, mental etc.

  • I once heard that someone has Herman Miller chairs for the dining table. Apparently they ate a lot. Or maybe it was a different forum?

    • +2

      It was The Clumps

  • This is a must buy!!! GET IT NOW!!! Love mine!

  • Not sure about this specific one but the mesh chairs at work are awesome which I would guess are subpar to this. Going from the traditional foamy spongy crap to mesh makes a huge difference.

  • -2

    Thanks, bought 5. 8)
