25% + 25% Discount off Standard Autosomal DNA Test at FamilyTreeDNA ($58 USD Delivered)

100
WELCOME

Not for everyone, but could still be interesting for some.
Please don't buy this thinking it will show you health information. This is not that kind of DNA test.

Groupon have a "Family Finder DNA Ancestry Test from Family Tree DNA (Up to 25% Off)" offer.
This can be combined with the coupon code "WELCOME" during checkout for an additional 25% off.
(If for some reason, you are an exisiting Groupon USA customer (and don't want to sign up with a new email), you could use "SALE3" coupon for 20% off instead)

Buy the voucher for $44, which allows you to buy the test for $1 plus $13 delivery to Australia
$58USD for an Autosomal DNA test is a pretty good price.

You will gain access to "Family Finder" (see other distant relatives who have also done the test), as well as "My Origins" to see the regions where your ancestors have come from.
FamilyTreeDNA also allows you to export your results into other websites (such as GEDMatch, MyHeritage, etc).

Note that this does not discount their other tests (Y-DNA for males, and MT-DNA for both sexes). But you can upgrade your test at a later date if you decide you want these results as well. It is much quicker and cheaper this way, as you don't redo the test, you just buy access to the upgraded results from your previous test.

You can find some health information by uploading your raw DNA file to promethease.com - It costs $5 for access but gives you alot of information about your DNA.
I did it for my partner that had done their DNA test on Ancestry DNA.

    • Fresh thing for me, so if I bought test service from FamilyTreeDNA, I'll be able to have my raw DNA file to uploading to promethease you reckon?
If just to see Origins info only really don't think worth.

      • Yes. Can download the file - about 6Mb as a ".csv.gz" file. Then upload to various other DNA sites. For some sites the upload happens by simply authorising a link to your test number on FTdna.

You get a lot more than "origins". Matches, Tree build facility etc all included in the test cost.

        • Thanks, just bought.

  • so 50% discount?

    • +4

      a little less.

      Standard price is $79 + $13 = $92USD
Groupon take 25% off the kit price ($59.25).
The coupon takes another 25% off that price ($44.44).
(which isn't even 50% either, due to compounding discounts)

ftDNA then adds $1 (I have no idea why)
Then adds $12.95 postage (which is not discounted at all).

So saying 50% off isn't exactly correct (that would require the total price to be $46)
But trying to explain all the above into a one line headline was too hard.

Maybe I should have just said 36.956521739130435% discount instead?

  • How do I sign up? I can't select any state other than in the US/Canada..

To Groupon? I just used the facebook option and it worked fine.

No issues with ordering from ftDNA as an Aussie though.

    • +1

PayPal avoids this. The credit card option locks you into having to supply a USA or Canada state and postcode. Use PayPal to bypass this.

When redeeming the voucher, FTdna allows overseas addresses and the US$12.95 postage includes International Shipping.

Damn! I thought I could finally afford to find out if the kid is mine.

Buy two (one for the child, and one for you) and it'll tell you how much DNA you share.
Hopefully it's about 50%… Otherwise, you may wanna purchase a third kit and test the milkman too!

  • Why no Groupon USA referral link? Will join direct I guess. OP can you use this?: https://www.groupon.com/visitor_referral

    • I'm happy to use someone else referral link. First to post theirs here will get added to OP.

Thanks BluBoy. Much appreciated. I will let you know later if I get any.

  • OK, here's my pitch: invent a DNA analysis gadget that can connect to one's smartphone via bluetooth to show the health info. DNA extraction should only take a minute, right fellas?

  • This is a good opportunity. Family Tree DNA is the most sophisticated DNA provider. Both in terms of web site and its content. And also in the mathematical precision of their estimates - particularly geographically.

Prior to the 1800s people did not move much. Walking at 4Km/hour or not much better by horse if travelling all day. 90% lived off the land. So before 1800s your ancestry may well be very regionally defined. For example; Yorkshire. Or, the vicinity of Edinburgh. Paper records will usually get you back to 1800 or just before.

A DNA Ancestry Test from Family Tree DNA can pin-point your geographic community of origin.

  • I'm pretty keen, do they keep the rights to sell your DNA?

  • Weird. I bought the Groupon, got a confirmation it was successful, got a PayPal confirmation and the Groupon doesn't show up on the website. Anyone else experience this? I've pinged their support and awaiting a response.

    • No, worked for me.
Even got the tracking number for the kit.
