    $10 off City2Surf Entry

Why is this a bargain ?

You can run from the City to Bondi anytime, for free…

    • +10

If you're planning on doing the run as a part of the paid event, this is a bargain

        • +7

Let's say that again for jv… If you're planning on doing the run as a part of the paid event…
          It is a bargain.
As a runner who enjoys participating in these events, I appreciate ozbargain posts like these to save me money.
Isn't this what ozbargain is for? Fellow bargain hunters helping each other save money.
Not useless comments like "you can run for free"

          @MountFranklin:

If you're planning on doing the run as a part of the paid event… It is a bargain.

That doesn't make any sense. Why would you want to pay for something that you can get for free?

        • +2

@MountFranklin: I'm not quite with JV, but even $57 is ridiculous.

        • @MountFranklin:

paid run is ok if the entry fee is reasonable as $20 or so. otherwise it is a ripoff.

        • @ATO:
Depends on the size of the run. Distance, entrants.

20 would be for a small local sub 10k fun run

        • @CH:
If you participate in many organised running events, then this is cheap. I run Gold coast half marathon every year - early bird entry is $99… I've done many 10km and 21km runs to compare quality of run and value for money.

As a run for a social "fun" event, I would say city2surf is the best one - biggest event as there is no cap on entrants, 70k-80k people removing jumpers at the start line is a sight to see…
But if you are looking for actual running event for a personal best with minimal walkers then gold coast marathon event is the one to do IMO.

        • @jv:
jv. Sometimes you try too hard to be witty.
          It's become a running joke…

    • +8

Bus is quicker and less than $5.

    • +4

It's a bargain because organised races are a lot of fun, and have a totally different vibe to just doing the run on your own!

Non-runners probably don't understand, but non-runners aren't going to do the run for free or as part of the City2Surf anyway :P

      • -7

organised races are a lot of fun

        free races are funner…

        • -1

          partly agree,

        • Can you find a free race where you get officially timed results for distance more than 10k and ranking out of 50000 people.

        • @Gimli: Does the audience have to pay like going to the concert or NRL?

        • -3

          @Gimli:

Clutching at straws I see… lol

        • @jv:

But that's what people are paying for. Not to run from point a to b.

It's no point saying to can run for free.

        • @Gimli:

But that's what people are paying for.

I'll quote from their website :
"what the City2Surf is about; fun, fitness, fundraising, and being a part of the community."

        • @jv:
C'mon jv thats just marketing talk.
i'm talking about what people pay for. People already know "You can run from the City to Bondi anytime, for free…"
Sure its not something you or I may value but clearly some people value it.

        • @Gimli:

but clearly some people value it.

So they're paying $57 to get ranked, not to run?

        • @jv:
why don't you do the maths and work out what is different and let me know. If you can't work it out well may be go comment on some other thread.
I don't see the point of your comments. Clearly some people like to participate in the event for various reasons and are willing to pay for it. Obviously they know they can run that route for free any day, any time. Why not just let them enjoy it, rather than pretend you are much smarter than them.

        • @Gimli:

I don't see the point of your comments.

The point is you're paying to run between the City and Bondi, and paying for it, when you can do it for free.

        • @jv:
Clearly some people like to participate in the event for various reasons and are willing to pay for it. Obviously they know they can run that route for free any day, any time. Why not just let them enjoy it, rather than pretend you are much smarter than them?

        • @Gimli:

Clearly some people like to participate in the event for various reasons and are willing to pay for it.

That doesn't make it a bargain.

        • +2

          @jv:

It makes it a bargain when there are plenty of people in Australia who are happy to pay the regular $57 for the experience. Only having to pay $47 instead makes this a bargain for those people. Shit, who would have thought you're not the sole dictator of what is and isn't a bargain.

        • @lithius: 57 is already deducted

They are $67 at the moment, so you're looking at $57 per adult.

    • +2

+1 to JV, why the hell would you paid someone for the privilege of running??? I always thought this was a free event, does the money go to charity or something?

      • does the money go to charity or something?

Probably a very small 'token' amount… I reckon lots of other people are making lots of money out of this…

        • the typical "admin fees" will probably eat up the majority of the money…….

        • @FW190:

The event is owned by Fairfax Media… Enough said.

      • Back in the old days it use to be free until they decided to jack up the price. I agree with JV this time.

    • +2

You can't run the route on closed roads, without the need to stop at all, if you do it yourself any other time though.

    • +1

well thats news to me, I thought it was free all along.. Guess ya learn something new every day.

    • The purpose of this event is not just the run but to raise money for a charity of your choice, you know something bigger than just you.

      • How much of the money ends up going to charity?

Also, if you are going to make a donation to charity, why is it a bargain to give them $10 less ???

        • The $67 go to the organisation of the event: closing roads, paying non-volunteers, advertising etc…
So you can pay $10 less and give the $10 to a charity, at least that's what I did.

        • @exa:

Why not just give $67 to the charity instead of helping others profit from it…

        • @jv:

Because you get a donation page where people and companies can donate, for example the top team already has $11k https://city2surf2017.everydayhero.com/au/team-hoy-angels

If every participant gave $67 directly to charity it wouldn't reach the same amounts and the publicity for the event makes people participate and donate more than just another day.

        • @exa:

and the publicity for the event makes people participate and donate more than just another day.

and makes certain third parties very wealthy in the process…

  • +3

Agreed. Complete rip off. But, each to his own.

    • -1

      But, each to his own.

OP appears to be a bit Rusty…

      • +1

        Haha

      • Not only he appears to be a bit Rusty, but also his real name seems to be XXXX…

  • +1

    Thanks for sharing op

  • -5

RIP OFF! why pay when its free

    • one JV is enough
      please leave.

  • +2

few years ago i got it free with some westpac code. no way spent $50+ now

    • I got it that year as well! Did it with my partner but never finished because he tripped over a gutter and broke his arm :/

      • +1

no need to finish. we end up drinking coffee half way through, then ice cream few kms after

    • Same here although I wish they let me join the red group instead of the yellow. So many slow walkers in yellow. The medal was pretty cool though.

  • by the way can we just join the crow at few kms after the start line? or police will kick out everyone without number on their chest?

    • +2

or police will kick out everyone without number on their chest?

there is no law that says you can't run.

      • reading the last flight accident of Mr Dao in UA, i am honestly afraid, Jv. i dont want to loose teeth

        • @jv: yes that one.

        • @jv: what does someone's criminal history have anything to do with this?

        • -2

          @dragonindespair:

It wouldn't surprise me if he staged it all so he could sue them… It's the American way…

        • @jv: Looks like United's lawyers been busy… $600mil wiped off the share price, not to mention brand reputation taking hit. And thats before it even hits court (Im sure theyll settle out of court)

    • +1

or police will kick out everyone without number on their chest?

So put a number on your chest.

      I call dibs on τ = 2π

      • hmm actually i was thinking to put 007 as my number.

      • +1

        420 here

    • +1

You can join at the start line. I did it years ago - just waited till the main rush was over and joined in. I didn't take their drinks along the way because I felt wrong about getting something for nothing but had no issue walking alongside people who paid to walk on public streets.

    • "by the way can we just join the crow"

      Are you a bird watcher?

      • i was thinking about this
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crow_(comics)

  • the form asked for Westpac bsb number

  • OzBers goes to City2Surf?

  • Thanks! Was able to use it.

  • Do you need to pay for run.. I thought it was always free…

  • +3

I did it last year and it was a awesome run, great atmosphere too. You also got free transport on Trains and buses for the rest of the day, Just had to show your race bib.

  • I don't get why people pay for these events - you get to run in a really annoying crowd and pay for the pleasure of it? Like the spring cycle - my mate always wants me to go in it and I am like why would I pay $60 to ride a push bike with 50,000 other people? I did it one year and it is just a crush of people going too slow. Maybe I am just cantankerous.

    • +3

Spring Cycle I can sort of understand your point, apart from riding across the Harbour Bridge (which in itself is a highlight and not possible to do any other time), you can ride the route yourself. Some people aren't confident enough to ride by themselves though and there is a good vibe being in a big group.

City2Surf is completely different. A lot of people treat it as a personal challenge, they train specifically for and peak for the event. It is a personal race for most people, whether their goal is to get to the end without walking, or to get a new PB. Running the route for free some other time simply doesn't compare. For one thing, you can run on smooth uninterrupted tarmac (cos all the roads are closed) rather than the narrow footpath (where you've got to stop at all the lights) and you don't have to really carry anything with you as there is a free bag drop service and water along the way (plus free transport). There's not much of a crowd too if you start in one of the pre-qualifying groups.
By the same token, you could ask why people pay to enter athletics races on the track, when they could easily mark out 100m on the road and sprint themselves there. It's not the same.

      • OK fair enough so its like a motivational PB thing.

    • Not much different then going to the gym and doing cardio, when you can do that stuff out in the street for a fraction the cost. Certain benefits of doing it at the gym though.

  • I might just wait for the cheap 'Finisher' shirts again…

  • Thanks for the deal.

  • +1

dam..people pay to run on road?! lol

  • +2

Upon reading the title: I think I'm the only one who doesn't know that it cost money to take part of city2surf.

Upon reading the common section: I'm not alone. I'm never alone!

    • +1

yeh I was always thinking of attending but had no idea it cost that much. Dont think I'll bother now.

  • -2

I can hear a wise old phrase echoing in my ear drums.. “a fool and their money are easily parted”

  • +5

bunch of hating from people who dont run? Move along.

  • +2

I entered the city to surf I think in 2001 (or maybe 2002). was a great challenge. I really pushed myself, was totally exhausted by the end but I enjoyed it. Even if you are a casual runner I would recommend entering. I'll have to come back to Sydney and enter it again.
