  • Does PIA support P2P? How is the performance?

    • +1

I use PIA for the SOCKS5 proxy for torrenting and it works great; I believe the location is in the Netherlands.

Maxes out my middling ADSL2 connection with no problem, I get the full 1.4MB/s download which is the fastest my line can go.

  • Stay away from US based VPNs if you value your privacy [regardless of 'no logs' claim]. PIA is based in California. Look up NordVPN, it has the best encryption and features available, affordable, and based in Panama.

    • +3

Pia claims regarding no logs have been proven in court.

      • Zero logs is a dangerous myth. US agencies can compel PIA hand over every shred of information they have regarding your account. They have no jurisdiction in Panama and Panama does not comply with US requests. But hey, nothing to hide, nothing to fear, right?

        • If they have enough evidence on you to get a warrant to do this, I think you have more problems than your VPN provider.

Besides the information that PIA has on you is exactly the same as the government would already have on you, aside from time and length of session. Which is basically useless.

        • -3

@dazweeja: A little research will tell you otherwise.

        • +7

          @Chateau:

You are making the claim. Give me one concrete example of when this has happened. The name of the relevant court case will be sufficient.

        • -6

@dazweeja: I'm not trying to convince you, just some friendly and free advice. But if you could keep your ill-informed opinions regarding VPNs to yourself rather than putting others in danger, that would be much appreciated.

        • +3

          @Chateau:

I've been trying to do a little searching as you suggest but I'm struggling to find any hard evidence on this.. so I must agree with dazweeja, it would be great if you could share some of the information you have been reading and have seen so we can all benefit…

The evidence I did find is that PIA has already been through the courts and seemed to have handled things very well, essentially not having any information to hand over to the courts essentially…

I'm looking for a VPN service and open to all opinions and facts however I'm struggling to find any evidence against PIA, I have however found a few negatives against your recommended service NordVPN and interested in your comments… the review I found was from an independent reviewer in Australia (Choice Magazine) who reviewed over 20+ VPN services, I've included some of their findings in a few posts below…

        • +3

          @Chateau:

Mere assertions don't cut it here.
          Where's your evidence?

          This is fake news.
          You're fake news.

        • -2

@Jonc: Every US based VPN provider has a vested interest in not advertising their legal obligations under US law and are compelled to comply with subpoenas served by US security agencies. They are also compelled under law to remain silent on any ongoing investigations.

There is a more secure option for those wishing to protect their privacy, which is the primary purpose of engaging the services of a VPN provider. That option is VPN providers that are not based in one of the Five Eye countries. That's all.

        • +1

Many providers claim no logs, running a company called private internet access you would think privacy of customers would be your no.1 goal. Anyway, as I mentioned PIA claims regarding nil logs proven in court.

          https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/forum/discussion/21175…

        • +6

          @Chateau:

You are missing the point. A warrant or a warrantless NSL can compel a VPN provider to hand over all relevant information. They may be able to ascertain if an individual is a customer for example. There is no US law that can compel a VPN provider to log its customers (eg. there is no metadata retention laws in the US). PIA's claim that it doesn't keep logs has now been tested in court. If in future some evidence surfaces that they do keep logs, not only would there be the inevitable class action against the company for deceptive conduct, they would also clearly be in contempt of court.

Your suggestion was to use some company operating out of Panama where you have no legal protection at all. They could log all your browsing history and sell it to Russians and there's not a damn thing you could do about it.

If you think that is the better option, go for it but calling others that feel differently "ill-informed" is just poor form on your part.

        • +1

          @Chateau:

You've got the IQ of a chicken

          Buk buk buk, bukarp!

You're a fool. Stop talking to me.
Yep, that sounds pretty dumb when i say it too…

        • If you have nothing to hide, then you'd have no problem with the Govt putting surveillance cameras in your bedroom and bathroom either, right?

    • As per Sadkid reply above it seems they've addressed this? "Since they don't keep logs they can't assist probes by giving them anything, also they're willing to shut down operations to protect users"

      https://helpdesk.privateinternetaccess.com/hc/en-us/articles…

I'm still considering using them or not myself but it does seem and sound like they take privacy seriously, especially given the previous court action could not get any details out of them which sounds good…

      • +1

I agree. A single court case using evidence obtained from PIA would destroy their business, and they know this. And the idea that that first court case will involve an international warrant is so remote as to not be worth thinking about.

Going on Choice reviews NordVPN got 17th place… PIA got 4th place!

        Discrepancy in speed using VPN
        Nord=-36% , PIA=-8% (PIO much faster)

Ease of service cancellation score (%)
        Nord=50% , PIA=80% (Easier to deal with)

Auto server selection (to find the best performance server automatically)
        Nord=NO , PIA=Yes

Nord does allow for upto 6 simultaneous connections were PIA only allows upto 5 and Nord does have more countries with servers (claimed).. other than these two points PIA seemed to have been scored allot better by Choice magazine.

Just for information the 3 companies Choice put above PIA was: VyprVPN, CyberGhost VPN & VPN Secure (1st, 2nd & 3rd)

Hope this information is of use to others… I'm just getting into VPN's so am no expert but wanted to share some of what I've read so far…

        • +3

Choice also didn't include the no log feature in their evaluation. Also just information for others.

        • +1

PIA has many more servers in Australia too, PIA's 217 vs 20 with NordVPN.

        • +1

If that is true does that mean VPN Secure is a better buy? They also state "Does not keep any logs of your activity"

          https://stacksocial.com/sales/vpnsecure-lifetime-3

looking for options to watch Foxtel Go when in Asia mid-year. Used VyprVPN and F-secure successfully a couple of years ago.
    Will PIA work?

    • Would also like to know this. Also with their app are you able to watch foxtel go internationally through the app on a tablet?

    • Pretty sure I watched the cricket on my iPad via PIA/FoxtelGo last December in NZ. And definitely watched footy via FoxtelGo same way from Slovenia 2 years ago.

      • Can confirm; have watched cricket using PIA when abroad through Foxtel.

  • +1

Thanks OP. my PIA is expiring in 2 weeks, so this definitely is a bargain to me

    • +1

OP didn't mention it only works on new accounts. Don't waste your money.

      • +8

Just create a new account with pia.

        • Yups doing exactly that. Not too attached to my old account anyway

        • +1

This. Doesn't everybody do this anyway? I mean your account is supposed to be a throwaway/anonymous, that's the whole idea.

Simple matter of grabbing the new username and password when you get the new account, that's all.

  • +1

Noob question. Will it work with other torrents such as Utorrent?

How much of an impact does it have on speed?

  • +2

Couldn't have timed it much better, I was due for renewal in 3 days :)

  • If you sign up to this deal, will it auto renew in 2 years time at that price like previous deals?

    • Usually yes, but there is a simple tick box that you uncheck and it will prevent auto renewal

  • Another feature of PIA is that you can pay with a gift card. Just hop on Amazon and buy one of the approved gift cards, then not even PIA knows who you are!

    • so, you saying, can't trace it back to you by gift card number, and how you pay for the gift card?;)

      • +6

They can. That's why you purchase a gift card at a nondescript shop without CCTV while also using cash. Then you swap that gift card with someone else and use their gift card to pay for the service.

        • Good luck finding a shop that sell gift cards that don't have CCTV? ;)
And all that too download torrents? or do some geo block online shopping?

If you going that far, more like you are doing something really dodgy and I don't want to know lol
As if shop goes through their CCTV footage to catch a person who download some new star was movie. Seriously?

      • buy gift card using bitcoins?

  • I'm a fair noob on these issues. Is there any way of accessing overseas netflix with this VPN or is it blocked?

    • Netflix can detect that you are using a VPN most of the time.

  • +1

I use my Google Play credit for this. Get a few telstra prepaid packs for cheap and buy a year's worth.

  • Getflix lifetime for Us$39 is still on. Is this not better?

    • I don't think their VPN is fast.

      • It was about half the speed of the PIA VPN while I was using it, they also support US Netflix and are cheaper. I'd probably go with Getflix but I'm already half way through a paid year of PIA.

  • I use PIA for 1.5 years now. You do notice a change in speed, and sometimes servers can be slow but overall a good product.

Has desktop client that's easy to use and setup. Also has mobile client if you really need it. I've been able to implement on my router as well so all traffic goes through PIA, however you will find that some sites don't work.

Netflix doesn't work, you can login and get to "play" but it presents an error. Sometimes the SYD/MEL servers get blacklisted with certain domains but it's like that with all VPNs.

Overall well worth the investment if you want some level of privacy. There's always a server that's up and the service is reasonable for the price you pay.

    • Netflix is working on a server in Texas, was reported on Whirlpool.

  • Bought it, installed it, connected, DNS is still leaking like a sieve.

  • New PIA customers or new Stack Social customers? My subscription renewed last week for another 2 years for $59.95.

    • +1

      Both.
Just create a new account for both and you'll be able to sign up to this deal.

    • I found out after the fact it's new PIA accounts… Iuckiky my old account was about to expire in two weeks so no harm done really.

  • Where can we buy Amazon giftcards here in Mel?

    • Amazon.com

  • Is anyone considering VPN use for all internet activities now that META DATA collection is in full swing? I have mates who use VPN for specific applications but not everyday browsing. I've started looking at VPNs with the introduction of the new retention laws.

    • Yes. Literally everything I do (except gaming because latency) is routed through a VPN. On my phone the same applies.

      • Are you with PIA or another provider?

        • PIA

  • Whats better this or CyberGhost
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/302195

    • This is better, don't know much about CyberGhost.

  • Hiw reliable is PIA being that it operates from USA now that new laws are in affect in uncle Trump's USA where ISPs are now legally allowed to snoop ? My sub expired last week so looking for a VPN too. Quite hesitant to go to a US VPN provider now.

    • PIA is not an ISP.

  • Can someone please answer a couple of questions. Thanks in advance

    1. Will it help me have a better Netflix connection as i believe Telstra is throttling Netflix between 6-10pm. I am on 30 Mbps firbe to house connection. Everything else works fine e g YouTube in 1080p.

    2. Can I easily configure it in apple tv 4 ? I have a Telstra gateway max and I don't think it has the option to configure a VPN.

  • How does a VPN affect a gamer's ping for a Battlefield server? Also how does it work if you have a home phone bundled with your internet?

    • Generally speaking you won't want a VPN for gaming as a gaming server would already be closer to your location. If you connected to say Europe or America via a VPN you will have very high ping and not be able to play multiplayer games.

Home phone presents the adsl cable, nothing to do with a VPN so all good there.

  • does this stack with the 10% off first purchase?

    • Don't see why not

    • +1

I reckon we are only allowed one promo code on the final pymt page

  • +1

Yet to have a positive experience with PIA VPN. Slow slow slow speeds..

Can anyone recommend a VPN that will hide my IP but give me my same 36MB/s telstra speeds??

    • Try using their OpenVPN implementation. I get much faster speeds not using their "app". I trust open-source over closed-source software any day of the week.

  • Started using PIA a few years ago and thought the service was adequate.

Quite surprisingly they have just got better and better. Adding servers and speed to their offering

I happily pay my bill every time now - consider me a happy customer

  • Noob question. Is there a relatively simple setup to use this (or any VPN) on Kodi box (mi box)? And is it something that can be turned on and off simply without going through millions of clicks?

    • Simplest way is to purchase a router with VPN pre-installed onto it.

  • Is the redemption link not working for anyone else?
    EDIT: Works now.

  • anyone else actually having trouble getting on their website?

  • +1

Probably not the best VPN in terms of speed or countries available, but this is still an unbeatable deal. Thanks.

  • What am I missing to get it down to $50.96?

It shows $59.99US and 10% coupon for new Stacksocial members - where's the other discount I've missed?

    • +2

      Its up the top: PIA15

      • +1

Can't believe I missed the coupon on OzB - I'll go see myself out.. Thanks!

  • Do they have a trial period where I can either try it for free or get a refund? Just in case my internet cannot cope (i.e. not enough speed/useable)

  • Good deal. ;P

  • Do you think this is worth getting now even if my IPVanishVPN subscription expires in July?

    • +1

I'd drop that VPN now and start using this.

  • What about Ivacy? 35.95 USD for two years (if you wait a few seconds for the discount to show up)
