  • If I need to schedule the light to turn on/off at certain time of the day, how does it actually work?
Do I need IFTTT for that? Do I need a smartphone/tablet to be connected all the time to the bulb?
I still don't understand which one is the controller that reacts to the change of the time and command the bulb to turn on/off.

I understand other products have a "bridge" unit, which I assume will act as the controller for the bulbs.

You don't need any device to act as a 'bridge'. Instead each bulb connects to the internet/cloud service. So for IFTTT for example, as long as your bulbs are online they will respond.

    • +3

no bridge or hub needed with LIFX. Each bulb has WiFi chip so they connect directly to your router.

to create your schedules you don't need to use IFTTT. you can create them in the LIFX App.

the schedules will actually be saved to the cloud and be actioned via the cloud and not the app.

this means you don't need to be home for it to work. so you can make auto schedules for security when your away etc…

      • Unlike the other A19, there is no real discount if I buy a 2, 4, or 6 pack, because the price works out to just under $55 each. Any chance of giving a proper discount if I buy more the 1?

The bulbs connect via WiFi directly to your wireless router. From memory, when you first buy the bulbs, they put out a "wifi hotspot" which you connect to from your phone and put in your wireless router details. The bulb sets itself up and can then be controlled by any device connected to the router, or from any internet device (e.g. outside your house).

The LIFX app, at least on Android but surely iOS too, allows you to set schedules. For example, my bulb gets the local sunrise time and fades on to a bright blue color over 60 minutes, and then turns warm at sunset, but you can do the same for specific times too.

To change the color/brightness, yes you will need a phone/tablet/pc with app running. Note that to control the bulb, it still need to be flicked on at the light switch. If you flick it off at the wall, and come back and flick it on, it will return to full brightness for safety reasons.

      • I see.
This means the bulbs needs to be connected to the internet all the time, otherwise the action won't be triggered, right?
Is this the same with other alternatives such as philips hue and wemo too (must be online all the time)?

        • I'm not 100% sure. Perhaps they can store things locally and trigger them.

LIFX uses the cloud for schedules so does need them to be connected at all time. No real reason to not have them always connected.

        • @kavalier27:
Some people may wish to reduce cumulative power wastage of devices on stand by, or even reduce the wireless radiation of numerous devices during sleep for example.

  • Anyone here having disconnection issues with Gen 3 bulbs? I have 12x count mixed Gen 1 and 2 bulbs and 4x Gen 3 bulbs, I find my Gen 3 bulbs always disconnect from the network and would need to turn it off and on again from the switch to be able to be controlled again.

Had it in support with no resolution except an RMA which the replacement bulbs did the same thing.

My experience with the brightness with Gen 1 and 2 are pretty much the same as the Gen3 other than Gen1 and 2 bulbs run really hot.

Still waiting for HomeKit support ! Been ages

    • +2

      Still waiting for down-light versions.

    • I don't think it's going to come even though it was advertised with homekit support in the future.

I read somewhere that homekit support requires new hardware built-in(special Apple-approved chip), so lifx gen 2 missed out.

But gen 2 at my home has been working very well with amazon echo dot. I use yonomi app for all my scheduled events.

Price is slightly cheaper than what I paid last year, $225 vs $219 for 4 bulbs.

      • I don't think it's going to come even though it was advertised with homekit support in the future.

It's only been promised for Gen3, not the ones in this deal.

        • They stated homekit support was coming for gen 2 before. I made sure of that before purchased last year.

Hi OP, are the previous gen lights still compatible with such devices as google home and amazon echo?

    • What about the switch on my wall? Does the switch on the wall need to be connected to the internet for my finger to turn it on or off? Or do I need to upgrade my finger's firmware?

      • Huh?!? Dude, you have an odd sense of humour but each to their own lol

    • Yep, the Gen 1 and 2 bulbs work with Amazon Echo and Google Home.

  • How is the Xiaomi yeelights compared to these.

    • Cheaper

  • I have a few Lifx lights but I'm holding off buying anymore until you guys produce a physical switch. I hope you guys are working on it!

    • Not on the roadmap that I know of. More lights suit more fixtures is the focus.

What about a voice product like Echo or Home?

      • +1

I use the echo everyday and its great. However a switch for the main living area would be great just to cater for the grandparents who aren't too tech savvy. Something like the one offered by the Philips Hue.
