NetGear Arlo Add-on Camera $149 + Shipping @ JB Hi-Fi

20

The Arlo camera is a 100% wire-free, completely wireless, HD smart home security camera. The Arlo camera is weatherproof and includes motion detection and night vision. It can capture clips and send you alerts.

Note: This is an add-on camera that requires the separate purchase of an Arlo Security System.

Please note that this model has been superseded by the Pro series (hence the price reduction). However, this superseded model is compatible with the new Pro base station. The main differences between the two cameras are that the new ones have a built-in rechargeable battery as well as 2-way audio, whilst the old ones require 4x CR123 batteries and do not have 2-way audio. (The Pro base stations also have a smart siren and a local USB drive storage option.)

Also available at the Good Guys for the same $149 price (plus shipping, which is 5c more than JB Hi-Fi for me) until 26 April, which may be a more convenient and cheaper option for those who live near them or have a discount code: https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/netgear-arlo-smart-home-secur…

100% wire free unit requires batteries. Can't see if these are AA at a glance, manual implies you should not use rechargeable batteries…

A recharging dock would be much more practical, does not seem to be an option.

You think recharging a security camera using a dock would be much more practical?

I use Olight RCR123A rechargeables in my Arlos. Nitecore D4 chargers go for cheap on here every month.

  • existing arlo station has a 2x USB ports…

    • That do nothing. Only the Pro base station has local storage option, but still needs to backup to the cloud as well

  • I have one of these units from a beta test. Each camera has a rechargeable battery. Battery life is pretty good I usually get about 2 months out of a charge.

Charging via usb a.c. adaptor takes a few hours.

    • How much actual transmitting time do you get? 2 months for a device left transmitting video for an hour at a time is impressive.

      • They only record 10 seconds at a time. They only record on sensing movement. You can do a live view with them to check alignment.

I use rechargeable CR123 batteries and with about 10 to 20 recordings per day (at 10 seconds each), I use about 15% battery per month.

        • 10 seconds is the default time. You can configure to record longer.

        • @pitufon: I left all of mine on 10s due to the lag in when it starts. I usually catch the tail end of someone walking past and then 8 seconds of nothing. Don't know what I would do with 118 seconds worth of nothing.

        • @pegaxs:

in the odd occasion that you get broken into the 118 seconds will be something and 10 would become nothing. :-)

@pitufon: no, I just get 12 x 10 second videos instead of one long video every time it fires…

What it could do with is a buffer record. As soon as it triggers motion, it saves from the buffer to negate the lag in recording.

        • @pegaxs:

it could actually do with a lot of things, to be honest. I only use it for keeping an eye on my babies, IF it was for 100% security I'm not sure I would use this as my full (only) solution)

      • A fair bit I would say. I've set my motion sensor recording length to 1 minute long, Can be anywhere from 10 seconds to 120 seconds I believe. I usually live view at least 5 times a day and there's usually around 20 entries of recording each day

  • These are good. Saved me a lot of heartache.

My only gripe is that there's no smart detection (yet) and the 720p video quality leaves a lot to be desired. Don't expect to make out text.

  • Isn't this the regular price?
