[NSW] Pay What You Want for Groceries @ OzHarvest (Kensington)

7923

Ok Ozbargainers.. new Ozharvest supermarket offers free food however you can donate in-store.

Located in Kensington NSW.

Happy shopping!

P.s do the right thing and pay ..

  • What is available in the OzHarvest Market?

A range of products from fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, tinned goods, frozen meals and drinks to toiletries and home products. What we have in-store will vary each week depending on what is rescued or provided by our generous food donors.

  • What is rescued food?

We rescue food that can’t be sold by supermarkets and food retailers due to being past its display by date but is still perfectly good to eat. We also rescue products which are surplus for a variety of commercial reasons, such as change in packaging or incorrect orders.

  • How much does it cost?

Our philosophy is ‘take what you need, give what you can’. If you can’t afford to pay and you’re in need of food, please take what you need. If you can give something, then please do; every dollar donated can help OzHarvest provide two meals to Australians in need.

P.s do the right thing and pay ..

then why post it under freebie and add free to the title?

      • +16

well then it's odd you'd tell people to pay!

        • +8

          @Scrooge McDuck:

Not everyone is lucky enough to have a low income. Or perhaps they had an unexpected bill that wiped out their low income one fortninght. Some people are with ***** who wipe out their entire income, but they're scared to leave because every week a woman in Australia is murdered by their partner or ex partner. Often it is just a little bit extra occasionally to get by, but some people really don't have anything.

A couple of examples I've known of, are young people (18-21 years old - foster care might be a possibility under 18) who can't live with their parents (or choose not to because they would rather live on the street than with abusive parent/s and they haven't been able to get a job), who can't claim a Centrelink benefit because payments are based on their parents' income. Also it can be pretty hard to claim a benefit without an address or access to electricity - for when they call and email about your application.

Another example was a non-citizen who'd come to Australia with an abusive husband, who was earning an income while she raised their children. He left her and the children with nothing. Thankfully their church provided them with a place to live and helped out with necessities, but without their kindness they'd have had nothing and they were not able to claim a Centrelink benefit.

          @Miss B:

You and others completely missed my point.

"Need" and "afford" are highly subjective terms.

"Need" can be continually reduced. e.g. We only "need" the bare necessities of life. Do we even "need" to live? We can't suffer if we're dead. etc

If you scrounge and save what you do have you can "afford" more expensive purchases that others with higher incomes would "afford" easily.

        • +2

@Miss B: Whilst I agree with the message, the silent abuse is abuse against males.
Can we agree that abuse is abuse and simply unacceptable instead?

        • +3

          @086:

I love how quickly this turned from an advertisement for a charity's fundraising/welfare campaign to a philosophical question regarding croissants, then to a lecture on domestic abuse.

        • @086:

          Totally agree!

  • Free groceries. You don't get the supermarket

    • Thanks!

    • +1

      You don't get the supermarket

      Just the contents.

  • +102

I dont think this is appropriate as a deal. If you can afford to buy a new flashy phone, OzHarvest isn't for you. Would hate to see people take advantage of it selfishly.

    • -5

If you can afford to buy a new flashy phone, OzHarvest isn't for you.

But you need energy and calories to use the phone.

      • +1

Yer shouldn't be but many people who can't manage money and are in troubled times tend to still have a flashy phone

        • -1

If they didn't have a flashy phone to demonstrate their worthiness and status then people might know that they're poor or bad at money!

        • +1

I live in a town where a lot of people do that and it nearly always their own fault they're in that position, and usually why they have a flashy phone and no money or struggle to pay bills and put food on the table.

    • +1

would you call my Xiaomi Redmi 4 a new flashy phone?

      • +11

        Compared to no phone. Yes.

        • +7

Compared to all the beggars I see with this year's flagship? Nope.

        • I would question what is more important these days…a mobile phone or a car.
A mobile phone allows you to connect to the internet and engage in society. Pay bills, communicate, emails, get/apply for jobs etc. A car isn't as important given you can ride a bike or catch public transport.

So are you inferring if you have ANY mobile phone, you shouldn't be allowed to utilise the services of ozharvest over someone with a car and no phone?

          Hmmmm….

      • +3

im using a bluboo mini, i can only DREAM of a Xiaomi !

      • of course not its a Xiaomi

      • Every true ozbargainer is armed with a genuine Xiaomi.

I'm still rocking the redmi 3.

    • +6

My understanding is that the food is mostly donated from supermarkets, airlines and other big businesses.

It's naive to assume that because someone browsers OzBargain, that they themselves or someone they know, are not genuinely in rough times and could use this serves.

      • +3

I don't think that's quite what Ughhh meant. And I think you know that too.

      • I don't think you're getting my point…

    • But you have spent all your money on the phone and need food.

    • +2

I do some volunteer work with people who are disadvantaged and have no access to the internet. I'll pass this on them when I next see them. Thanks for letting us know.

    • Did you even read the deal before you mounted your high horse Ughhh?

If you can give something, then please do; every dollar donated can help OzHarvest provide two meals to Australians in need.

They want people who can afford to pay to donate. So instead of going to Woolies or Coles you could do your shopping there and help people not a corporation.

      • +2

Yes I did and I made my comment within 10mins of op posting as a deal (freebie actually).

Did you even read what the original description was before it was edited? Do you even realise it was listed as a "freebie"?

    • Well if you can afford to buy a new flashy phone, OzHarvest is definitely for you, Would hate to see people only use their takers side of the brain selfishly, use the giver side of it sometime please.

  • +40

You realise posting this on Ozbargain will send them broke?

    • +33

I just saw Broden board the bus at eddy ave.

      • +19

Couldn't be him, Broden wouldn't pay for the bus, he'd use the free community shuttle for the disabled.

        • +22

Who said he paid? He presses his wallet against the opal reader and plays the 'beep' sound on his phone.

      • +2

I love the ozbargain specific humour. I feel like I'm part of the club when I understand the jokes.

  • +43

Anyone who abuses this is scum…

    • Broden?

      • +2

That's exactly what Broden would say to diminish the competition so he can abuse it all by himself…

    • +8

The real scum is the homeless guy who was giving me filthy looks after I scored 2 shopping trolleys worth of food for 10 cents.

  • +7

Will Coles and Woolies price match ?

    • +1

Not sure but I reckon The Good Guys will.

    • I just had great luck at jbhifi maroochidoore…
Why dont you try victoria gardens shopping centre?

  • +2

    the food is free,
you are not paying for it,
you are paying a donation to ozharvest.

    • +2

you are paying a donation to ozharvest.

So the receipt should be tax deductible then?

      • i hope so.

      • .. if it is a registered charity…

      • +6

Not if you receive anything in return for your donation.

        • +1

what about when you get a pin or ribbon from one of those veterans or cancer charities or something?

        • +1

You're not receiving the food in return for your donation. There is no obligation to make a donation - you are able to receive the food whether you make one or not.

        • +1

          @Marlboro Man:

Yep, just get the free food, put it in your car, then go back and make a donation for no return and ask for a receipt.

        • @jv:

Could I return the food at Woolies to make a profit? 🤔

        • @shrewduser:

what about when you get a pin or ribbon from one of those veterans or cancer charities or something?

Or when you get brownie points for drawing attention to your donation on social media?

    • +3

The food may be free, but there's associated costs…

"Obviously we’d love to be able to cover our cost and we’d love to be able to deliver more meals to vulnerable people. Every dollar that we receive allows us to provide two more meals to people in need."

      • +2

        Any Cashrewards with this, Tightarse?

        • 0.25%!!!

      • +2

        but there's associated costs…

        exactly…

there are petrol costs if you drive there, parking costs, or if you take transport, ticket costs too !!!

  • +91

This is sad, what on earth were you thinking when posting this here.

This should be reserved for those who genuinely NEED these groceries, not a bunch of tight middle-high income earners taking advantage of such a service.

Posting this on here under 'freebies' shows an obvious intent.

    Shame on you!

    • +10

This should be reserved for those who genuinely NEED these groceries

      Why?

      They actually state:

"Well-to-do shoppers could help out by paying what they would normally fork out at the supermarket."

      • +2

Why? Because it's a not for profit resource for the needy, not middle class leeches.

      • +14

If you pay the same as in the supermarket then it wouldn't be a deal. That's what you usually say. Step up.

        • +2

Well at least the money would be going to charity rather than money hungry supermarket giants

    • +3

not a bunch of tight middle-high income earners taking advantage of such a service.

Hey, speak for yourself, I'm not tight.

      • +3

        you're a scab and that's worse.

      • I'm not tight.

        We all know you're a loose scab…

    • +6

Yes it is so wrong in many levels.

    • +3

Totally disagree with you. I'm sure most people won't do the wrong thing. Posting here will get attention. Posting here will hopefully spread the word to those that might need this service.
And posting under freebies …wouldn't one who is finding it tough look for freebies.
I have seen people who earn over 80k a year use these services and pay peanuts to get the food in which I feel is wrong but most people that go there don't earn half that much.
It's sad your so negative. We don't know ops true intentions yet you like to shame so fast…
Just not sure when it comes to the word bargain…

      • +10

Judging by the past experience of OzBargain, I dont see this ending well.

      • +2

What if it was posted in a forum full of rich hungry greedy CEO's? Maybe they know a few poor people.

What's the ratio of effectiveness (actually helping the needy) through platforms where there isn't poverty vs abuse?

I guess my point is, attention is good, but the wrong attention could do more harm than good.

        • Hence my point - posting this on OzBargain (emphasis on Bargain here) indicates an intent.

    • +9

agreed, they're doing a great thing for the community and i would hate for this to be taken advantage of, don't think it should be classified as a deal and definitely not categorised as a 'freebie'.

    • +1

I usually look for vegies or fruits thats are reduced at the markets to cook in same day so I will go there give them the money that I will estimate as when I get those bargains from shops, this way it is a double deal vice versa.

    • Those 'tight' middle-high income earners are the same sorts that go to Melbourne's Lentil As Anything and contribute a lot more for a meal than they would in getting a fab better meal at a flash establishment…all to enjoy being part of something special and contributing to the continued running of an organisation that is there to help those in need.

Don't assume that just because middle-high income earners shop there means they don't contribute or donate much more to the service. It's equivalent to saying op shops are off limits to anyone not on the doll.

I imagine perishables are best bought by ANYONE than having to be thrown out because those on their high horses don't want 'tight middle-high' income earners buying there and supporting the organisation.

It's PAY WHAT YOU WANT…not PAY NOTHING. I imagine most people that you are referring (MOST) are cultured and responsible and actually care about the world they live in….and in such, would contribute fairly.

Again…Melbourne's Lentil As Anything is a great example of this.

Disclaimer: I'm not a tight middle-high income earner…but hate generalisations of any group by anyone that thinks they know what they are talking about.

Shame on YOU for your generalisations!

      • Show me proof.

        • Be more detailed in your absurd demand and I may have some idea to what you are inferring

  • +11

    Basically dumpster diving.
This isn't a bargain, it's designed for desperate people in need.

    • +9

      probably belongs in the forums…

  • Who reported this as illegal ???

    • Bradford Banducci

And it was post before 5pm Monday.

    • JV we all know it was you.

  • Happy for it to be moved to the forums if you prefer..

  • +1

in all honesty, i dont think this will be ozbargained lol if it was tech items, pay wat you want. it would be gone by now.

  • +19

This doesn't belong here, and shouldn't be advertised as "free" even though thats an option OzHarvest lists. Makes me feel dirty even thinking that just 1 OzBargainer might take advantage of this.

    • +1

even if the ozbarginer was poor and in need?

Dont assume all ozbarginers are well to do.

      • +1

An ozbargainer who can afford a computer/phone/tablet etc. probably isn't in need. The vast majority of ozbargainers aren't in need and it creates the possibility of some people exploiting the system because of greed.

      • +2

If the said ozbargainer was poor and in need, then they wouldnt be taking advantage of this

  • +14

Considering this is charity I don't agree

It's kinda like saying Salvation Army offers free money and making a deal out of it. Bad taste IMHO.

    • +1

      Bad taste

thanks will avoid their groceries if they taste bad.

    • +1

It's kinda like saying Salvation Army offers free money

      They do, where?

      • aren't they food vouchers in the form of a disposable debit card?

      • The Samaritans do. My wife volunteered in one of their Emergency Relief Centres. Sometimes people who hadn't paid Telstra for over 2 years would come in.

        • do they come in for one day work

        • @tuzii: My wife did 1 or sometimes 2 days per week as her role included debt assistance, writing cheques, issuing vouchers etc. One client was going to have their electricity disconnected due to a $1,750 debt.

    • They do not offer free money. well unless you mug one of their collectors.

  • +2

I don't think this is an inappropriate post as this location is right next to a major uni and I am sure that there are uni students on ozbargain that live on annual incomes below the poverty line.
