For those still on the Windows 10 Mobile

I don't even think Microsoft is on the Windows 10 Mobile anymore.

  • +8

I still using 950 XL until now , last 2 months there was 2 update for windows 10 , and there is a Creator update coming soon , might give this a go .

    • +1

Exactly. They're still supporting the 1520.

New phone doesn't mean it's dead or dying (I hope)

      • This morning , get up and bought one , a bit expensive compare to the phone price , I bought one last year at another forum for $250 ( had been used for a few days ) .

  • I'm gonna hook up mine to my wife's Samsung S8 when I get it tomorrow to see if it will work with their version of Continuum (DeX)..

    • +3

It's not going to work. Dex dock works with the 950xl but the s8 does not work with the HD-500. See the comment by Tylerjames09 https://www.reddit.com/r/windowsphone/comments/66078u/dex_do…

      • Good.. I'm glad someone has tried. LOL. I do have another MINIX Neo-C dock to try too although I think it will end up being the same. Unless its "Samsung" branded dock, then DeX probably doesnt start.

  • +1

thanks Op. I have been waiting for a heavily discounted display dock for my 950XL. Bought one.

  • Any deals on the phone itself? (950XL)

    • +1

They have been out of production for a while with little to no stock in Australia.

      • +2

I still see them sell on eBay for ~$400 new. The phone itself would be worth it if was going to get full support and developed, but in 2017 for Windows, it is too steep. $200 is my number

        • +2

I got my 950XL from Microsoft for $320. Cant complain about the price.

While I'm not a supporter of purchasing a new phone close to its release date, unfortunately I was stuck in a situation where I had to upgrade. My old Lumia 920 (which I loved) motherboard decided to die on me and it was going to cost me $200 to replace in February 2016. At the time I was considering other phones and had my eyes on the Lumia 950xl and being an ozbargainer $1000+ was too steep for me until I added up the numbers.
Phone was $1179 outright at JB hifi. Price matched somewhere for $949 as worker most probably knew they weren't going to sell. He didn't even know the phone existed. But anyways at the time I got the display dock from microsoft, sold it on Gumtree for $110 and claimed 100% of my phone on tax for work. So all up after tax the phone cost $483. Not bad for early 2016.

While I've had many issues with the phone, I still think it's an amazing phone. People are impressed at the camera and screen quality when I show them travel photos.

        • @gezza90: I agree, I think it is one of the best phones ever made. I already have a Windows phone as a "burner" and it is good. Even Windows on a phone is great. The saddest part is the app store, or lack thereof. Would have switched in a second if just some of my devices had a windows app.

        • @Charity: Guess I feel pretty lucky all the apps I needed is on my windows phone. My android tablet just helps with the gap and lack of the other apps I need to use but I rarely use them.

I'm very happy with my 950XL and this is a good accessory at great value. Bought one. Thanks OP !!

It'll go well with your Betamax and 8 track.

  • Knew I should have waited. Bought it at Harvey Norman for twice the price, granted it was a few months ago.

  • +1

It's not just for those with Windows Mobile. This works as a USB-C dock for other devices, like MacBooks.

    • Do you know if the usb-a ports work if its not plugged in to power? And can the macbook pro 13 charge at full speed through it?

  • +7

I got one of these as a free gift when I got my 950XL, it works great. I have used it in several countries on hotel TVs as I travel. Supported apps scale beautifully up to huge screen sizes

    • -3

      Supported apps are not many.

      • This seems to be the common issue with Windows phones but it hasn't been a problem for me at all. Skype, OneDrive, DropBox, Netflix, Stan, Plex, Facebook, Spotify, WhatsApp, Pandora, MS Office, NSW Tripview, Viber, Boost, Shazzam, Uber, Hungry Jacks, CandyCrush, Most Banking Apps and so on. If that isn't enough, then I don't know what is.

        • Oh.. you mean these apps that arent Continuum enabled?

Kindle, Webex, Citrix, Ebay, GMaps, Google, Linkedin, Netflix (app), Opera Mini, Skype For Business, UC Browser, Any 3rd Party Video player (inc VLC), Metro File Manager, MS Voice Translator, WeChat, Whatsapp (App), XBox, Yammer

Plus the majority of games and 3rd party apps?

Lets go through the list eh?

        • +1

          @bchliu:
Just pointing out eBay doesn't have an official app anymore for wp. Which kinda sucks. I use ie mobile for it.

        • @harkoliar: Its ok.. Most of those so called Continuum apps are pretty much HTML5 wrapped apps anyway to make it work on a phone screen and in the browser. So I suppose you can argue that its still "supported" in that way.

        • Windows Phone doesn't have Tinder so it's a useless phone. A phone that can't get you laid is a rubbish phone in my opinion.

        • @bchliu: I do not want to read kindle books on a hotel tv screen. I do want to watch Netflix or play Groove music, or play downloaded media content like video podcasts etc. I play video content via my dock in hotel rooms while I browse/and do other things on my Surface tablet. It works superbly well, and looks great.

        • -1

@dechah: Not everyone uses Continuum on hotel screens. The idea was to dock a phone at work or home to turn it into a makeshift PC. Netflix only works from the browser (I have checked, latest app version does not work with Continuum on my 950XL). Playing video only works from the inbuilt player - which is limited to what it can play (eg. no MKV, RMVB or other less common codecs).
Debate is moot. Just count up the % of apps that are Continuum enabled on the already small selection of available software for Windows Phone 10- and there isnt that many.

        • -2

@bchliu: I never said everyone uses Continuum on a hotel TV, I said that I do, and regularly.

[Playing video only works from the inbuilt player ]

I play video from Stan. I have the entire Stan catalogue at my disposal. I play videos from the Plex app that accesses my Plex server of media files. I play videos using the universal version of VLC

          [no MKV]

Both VLC and Plex plays MKV with no problem whatsoever

I play all my music via the Groove Music app accessing my Groove Music pass content, and my own content that is up in the OneDrive Music folder

I can view all the photos I have taken that day on the large screen using the Photos app.

I can fire up the Audible app and play my audio books out of the hotel TV screen and get work done on another device.

I am super happy to have my small phone handset turn into a mini power house entertainment system while I get serious work done on either my laptop or my tablet.

  • How does this differ from the Actiontec SCREEN BEAM MINI 2?

    • +1

This is wired and better quality than the wireless out of the screen beam (WI-DI based).

      • +1

And your phone gets charged at the same time. Plus able to connect keypads and mouse.

        • lol. That depends on how many USB devices are hooked off it. Sometimes barely charges esp if you have external storage

    • I have the screen beam, it's pretty laggy when on continuum mode.

    • SCREEN BEAM MINI 2 can also be used with Android phones and Win10 Laptops.

  • +1

    Bought one tnx

Thanks OP, bought one, saved at least $3.00

This could be great for those looking to move to windows phone. I left windows for Android and really miss the customisable tiles. Huge walls of static home screen icons all the same size are getting boring.

    • -1

My clock icon moves in real time on iPhone, calendar too.

      • Yeah but that's only because iPhones are much better, more powerful and smarter

  • Bought one, cheers :)

  • When Microsoft seems committed to a rival's phone you know they've given up on their own…

    http://www.pcworld.com/article/3186749/mobile/the-samsung-ga…

    • I just drifted over to android after running a 1520 (still on 8.1) for the last 2-3 yrs. The tipping point was a bug in Onedrive and locking me out of the files on the phone (not on PC however) - which I needed most days.

Strangely when I took the SIM and SD card out, Onedrive worked again after the SD card went back in. Glad though that Onedrive, word and excel is available on android.

Keeping it as a back up and might play with windows 10 on it. Loved the big screen and the camera for daytime use.

  • Damn. Says out of stock now

  • Continuum is a cool concept and at this price worthy of the investment for 950 owners. My gripes with continuum is lack of multi tasking ability (defeats the point of bigger screen when apps are forced to run full screen one at a time), little support by developers and Microsoft (no real major improvements since release). It's a bit disappointing when most apps won't run in continuum mode. It would've been great if more games support it too.

For those wanting to just stream media and stuff like that, then you probably better getting a Chromecast or using miracast.

  • Looks like my shipment has been sent via DHL express - should be the same for most who purchased this deal!

  • Got an SMS that DHL will delivery tomorow , very quick .
