  • How trustworthy are these random online travel agencies that pop up on iwtf?

    • +2

I think you can always do a screenshot and bring it to your local Flight Centre to get them to price match for you.

A very good question for StoreRep.

From my one time experience, travelgenio has hidden fee. MyTrip was good.

Stay away from BestJet, or at least google them and look at the tripadvisor reviews. I had a very bad experience with them, and unfortunately didn't see these until I had already had problems.

Just curious if anyone has been to Malay, I am thinking about it for a short vacation (<7 days), any advice here?

    • +1

I was there last week. Totally fine.

KL is good fun if you like big cities, great food and night life. 5-star hotels are the cheapest there in the region. Plenty of nice island within 1 hour flying time. KL is also a good hub if you want to go to eg Koh Samui.

      • +5

IMHO KL is a really underappreciated place to visit.
It is cheap, has great shopping, relatively clean and orderly, interesting stuff to do, well situated for on-travel to other spots, good food etc.

        • Agree!

Loved the laid back atmosphere compared to Singapore, plus cheap hotels and food make you feel like a boss!

        • @montorola: Maybe it's just me but I feel Kuala Lumpur is slowly losing its laid back style. I've noticed the security on patrol is a lot more in-your-face than it used to be (e.g. KLCC Park rangers blowing whistles), but I don't live there so maybe it's appreciated by the locals.

I'm pretty sure Malay refers to the race and language and is not an abbreviation for Malaysia.

That said, KL is a very affordable place packed with good food and night life. I did two trips there last year. First trip was KL/Singapore. Second was KL/Bangkok. Bangkok is equally good if you are a foodie, plus the beers are cheap too. It's easier to get around KL/Bangkok with Uber than public transport. Buy an inexpensive local SIM instead of travel passes from telcos here (1 week pass from Telstra was $70 compared to a $10 local SIM). Hotels are aplenty and cheap, a 5-star hotel costing the same as a 2 or 3 here. Lastly, bring your fee free cards and exchange your cash locally for better rates.

I'm pretty sure Malay refers to the race and language and is not an abbreviation for Malaysia.

Absolutely correct, but I totally understand why people here call it "Malay". The logic behind it is just like referring to Indonesia as "Indo".

Agree with everything else you've said too.

Here's what I have to add:

        • Check Grab in addition to Uber for ridesharing because it's sometimes (usually?) cheaper, and you have the option of sharing a ride with someone via GrabShare to save you even more money (if you are not in a hurry). It's similar to UberPool, which hasn't made its way to Malaysia yet.
        • Grab and Uber fares in Malaysia are shown up front. Not an estimate like in Australia.
        • From the airport to KL city and with at least one other friend? use Grab/Uber. It costs RM75 (~$23) including tolls, as opposed to RM55 one-way on the train per person
        • You can also arrange a "GrabHitch" which is a effectively a scheduled GrabShare, which costs ~RM47 (~$15) inclusive of tolls.
        • If you wish to arrange GrabHitch, you should download the app and make an account before your flight so you know you've got a driver on the other end waiting for you
        • GrabHitch can however be booked just 15 minutes in advance, so in theory it's still possible to land, get a local SIM and then set it up
        • You can get referral credit
        • Alternatively, catch the bus which is RM11 (~$3.50) per person to KL Sentral
        • Best value local SIM (from recent experience 2 weeks ago) for ~7 days is Digi at RM20 including 2GB data + some credit for everything else. Validity was 7 days (from memory).
        • UMobile advertise "free SIMS for foreigners", but AFAIK you need to pay RM30 minimum to "top up" and activate the SIM with inclusions similar to Digi and inferior reception.

        HI m9,
My wife & I are heading to Singapore next week for a few days then on to Malaysia then departing back through Singapore. Should be in Malaysia 8 - 10 days. Flying Qantas after seeing a reasonable cheap fare ( but not as good as this one) on OzBargain.

As we are in upper middle age 60 but fit we are keen to see how ordinary people live and get by. Would like to see some nice beachy places and maybe a touch of the highlands but not too isolated as dont want to risk mozzie diseases. Not into theme parks, nite clubs or seeing every temple. I thought KL may be polluted and just a bustling place with modern buildings with fringe poverty. Last there in 1980 backpacking so scant memories.

Any suggestions welcome. Some say even territory just over ditch from Singapore should be seen as most bypass on way North. Will stop by Malacca but some folk I know in Oz think its overrated. Which is best side for beaches and general scenery.East or West. Ta for suggestion on local Sim WE are Telstra customers who just pay pre paid so that should stop us running up huge bills but then it will run out quick if we use it up. Is it safe to travel without a concealed money belt?
        Cheers

        • Always carry a strapped, concealed holder for your passport, cards and bulk money.

I can't begin to tell you how pointless non-medical insurance will feel when a passport or debit card slips out of your pocket.

The problem isn't Malaysia per se (though I know an 85 year old American that was pick pocketed in Kuala Lumpur). The point is that a minor inconvenience in Australia is a major inconvenience abroad.

Since there's two of you at least you have back up options but a lot of us don't and Australian banks are literally useless. At least some UK banks offer emergency money for debit cards.

        • @peterpeterpumpkin: Thanks for getting back & your comments Peter. Will look into getting something I can conceal for important docs, cards & cash. I even thought I could carry a dummy wallet so if stuck up they could take that one. Maybe that is over the top. Yes its handy to have two people to watch bags and your back most of the time. Yes I can accept that Ozzy banks are not always helpful. They are like that even when eyeballing them off the street in Oz.

I would be happy to carry your bags if you managed to throw a spare airfare my way!

I'm sitting in the Singapore lounge at KLIA right now, waiting for my flight to Singapore.

I love Malaysia, spend probably 3 months of the year in KL. Best. Place. Ever.
Spend weekends hoping on cheap flights to different places. Last year I went to Penang, Kuching, Langkawi and Johor. Was going to go to Borneo last week but couldn't be bothered, wanted a little down time.

      • I hate to be that guy but don't you find Peninsular Malaysia (and its islands off the west coast) a little boring after a while? Don't get me wrong. It's probably got the best value omnivorous dishes in the world, the accommodation is amazing value, it's safer than all of its immediate neighbors (excluding Singapore), and probably has the cheapest selection of flights in the world.

But it just lacks that something that makes you feel you've escaped Westernised monotony. And I hope it's not the alcohol (I'm happy there's none of that). Despite being such a short distance away by boat there's a holiday "vibe" in Koh Lipe you just don't get in Langkawi.

I haven't visiting Borneo or the Perhentian Islands yet but I'm hoping they feel a little more "escapist".

        • Boring? Not really, no.

I guess I'm not trying to escape anything so having something feel a little more "escapist" isn't of any importance to me.

    • Thanks guys :)

    • +1

I would suggest Penang as well. Great place to visit. And Malacca too.

    • If you don't want to spend all your time in Kuala Lumpur you can spend some time at Malacca, we love spending a few days here and is easy to get to with private transfer or bus. We are spending a few days in KL in October after a week each in Siem Reap, Cambodia and Chiang Rai, Thailand. All flown via Air Asia.

Don't forget it's $58 extra each way if you want a baggage allowance, so add about 50% extra to the headline rate for most travelers.

    • nar, travel carry on only or buy bag when returning

      • +2

Exactly, don't pack like a teenage girl

  • Got excited then, but not the dates I want. Waiting for 29/09/17 to 02/10/17 :D

Certainly is, although I am trying to pass it off as a 'Romantic break to Malaysia for our 5th Wedding Anniversary'

        • Lol yeah I need to go too.

But wanting to add Singapore and Japan to the mix.

Have you been to the Singaporean one? It's really good! $300 gets you a stand ticket and 3 headline concerts fri-sun.

So many cheap airfares, so little annual leave.

  • +1

Wonder if booking 2 one-way flights makes it cheaper?

    • You are booking two one way flights.

      • That doesn't really answer their question..

    • Cheaper than doing what?

      • Booking a return flight with Air Asia is usually more expensive than doing 2 one way flights.

        • The question didn't specify that's all.

Cheaper than buying both legs in the same session? On the same site? Cheaper to mix carriers? We're not mind readers.

    • +1

From my experience it is usually cheaper to book 2 one-ways.

The KUL-SYD leg gets charged in a MYR amount which converts to less than the AUD amount when booked as a SYD-KUL return.

Make it a little bit cheaper by paying with a Citibank Plus Card/28 Degrees/Bankwest Zero Mastercard/Coles Rewards Mastercard.. but even if you paid with a card that charges a currency conversion fee, would still probably work out cheaper overall.

Things to consider before doing this:

      • Consider the impact on free Travel Insurance on your Credit Card by booking this way instead, because this may mean you do not qualify because you haven't met the spend threshold
      • Alternatively, you may not qualify if your ticket has to be booked as a return journey originating in Australia because you've now broken it up
      • [Assumption] Consider how (or if) the airline will compensate you in the case of a delay in KUL. If you book it as one return ticket, the perception is that KUL is not your base and you're overseas so they may look after you better.
      • I've previously booked 2 one-ways on Air Asia and Jetstar (Bali) to make it cheaper, so always worth checking out the price difference.

  • What's the minimum age to pay for a seat on air Asia? If under 2 years do you fly free?

  • If you want to actually take luggage and book a seat you need to add about $120 on a return trip. So a $220 flight becomes $340. Unless I'm missing something? Still cheap though.
