Got it way cheaper than that in VIC

    • +3

Might be 100% off if there is no supply ;)

        jv said VIC, not SA

Union wants to close loy yang which supplies half of Vics power.

        • +1

          @pw2002au: ah, I c. So it's 50% off?

        • +4

          @pw2002au:

Union wants to close loy yang which supplies half of Vics power.

Will still have more power than SA

        • +1

@pw2002au: That's not quite correct. It's AGL that is threatening to close Loy Yang.

  • What are people's thoughts - is it still worth getting solar these days, with the lower rebates etc?

    • Last time I checked (a few months ago) the payback period was still >7 years and the lifespan might only be 10 years for the system.

      • Panels @ 25 years, inverter 3-10 years…electrical system should last 25+…just like your house wiring

  • +1

Hmmm… combining my gas and electricity seems dangerous

    • AusGrid was privatised last year.

  • I've spent all day comparing and just signed up with 2 other providers 30mins ago…
Hydro Pacific for electricity and momentum energy for gas. When I finished applying for momentum, their parent company happens to be hydro Tasmania too lol.

I was considering AGL for gas because of the flybuys points and agl rewards, but too many people bashing on them so I've dodged a bullet it seems.

    • I did exactly the same this week too.

    • I did the same and ended up going with Pacific Hydro for electricity and strangely Origin was cheapest for gas for me without bundling with electricity.

Actually, AGL showed as the cheapest based on the prices for my area. Then when I went to sign up they had a much more expensive set of rates for my particular address, which made them the most expensive because no other retailer charges my address more for no reason, they're just scammers.

      • +2

Ya origin appeared as $30 cheaper than AGL but then AGL had that $50 sign up credit with rewards on discounted gift cards/flybuys/1month free etc…
Was really really REALLY tempted by AGL while origin offered nothing.
Momentum didn't even appear on the VIC gov comparison website and gas appears to be more expensive if I don't use a certain amount per day.

Whereas the hydro electricity being 20-22cent versus everybody else's 30-32 cents with discounts was too good to pass up on.
So depending on my usage, gas may be slightly more expensive but electricity being cheaper with no risk/exit fees.

        • +1

Not only that… Hydro Pacific's daily supply charge is a good 30c cheaper per day than others (79c Inc GST versus 110c).

        • @Xiongmao: good info, thanks guys - currently I'm with Dodo and their service charges are $1.08 per day and $0.3095 per kWh. Pay on time discount is 20%, so lowers charges to $0.865 service and 0.2476 per kWh

        • @Xiongmao: hmm looking at Hydro service charges and it's $0.96 per day.

The agreement they sent me last week.

        • @Xiongmao: thanks for the info and confirmation.. ok well I'll give them a call and enquire now. thank you again.

        • @gizmomelb: You are welcome.

        • +1

@gizmomelb: Just as a follow up… I received a call from Energy Aus today (current supplier). Usual - why are you switching call. I explained. The rep basically said, let me look at the rates and I'll try to beat it.

He offered 44% pay on time discount on Elec which, even with higher daily supply charges, knocks Hydro out of the water (excuse the pun). This brought it down to ~15c per kw/h. Incredible!

        • @Xiongmao: wow! that is awesome.. I need to set aside the time and make some calls tomorrow. thanks for the followup. will look up what the Aus Energy service charges are so I can see if Dodo will come to the party.

        • @Xiongmao: hmm ok well I rang Dodo and after speaking with a consultant they are dropping their pay on time discount from 20% to 30% - so that is fairly good - unit charge of $0.3095 per kWh (down to $0.2166) - assuming there is no billing 'trickery' involved in their calculations. Won't know until next quarter though.

Would not piss on AGL if they were on fire.
They ripped my off for years and were frigging nightmare to deal with. After I left them, they sent legions of flying monkey door knockers and phone liars.
I hope they generally get (metaphorical) aids and herpes.
'part from that, they are great.

Which providers, other than AGL, do you guys recommend for NSW? What sort of discounts are we getting?

    • Not NSW but Dodo had the best rates by far and kept my solar FIT. Surprisingly happy with them. Most other retailers seemed to block you from the good deals if you have solar. Alinta literally kicked me out because I had solar, very poor experience.

    • The AgL looks kinda good compared to my current Click deal.

One month free and $50 sign up with usage @ normal/controlled 24/10 c/kWh (Inc discount) daily supply $1.50/0.14 day

For me the free month and sign up provides a benefit of around $ 225 after one year….just need to work out supply and usage charges

  • 20% off usage charges, so this does not include the daily supply charge. Can you change in title…maybe add 12th month free + $50 sign up

    • Does anyone in NSW get a discount on the supply charge?

      • Red Energy discounts the whole bill, not just usage.

        • Only 10% though

  • You should consider the following when looking into electricity/gas bills;
    - Supply Charges (also known as daily charges)
    - Usage Charges (peak/offpeak etc.)

Depending on which retailer, many offer discounts (e.g. 20% in this situation).
Some retailers offer it off supply and usage charges, other's may only take the discount off usage charges (you will need to do some investigation).

Probably the main thing to consider when comparing rates, you will find that anyone offering such LARGE discounts (15% and above), actually JACK UP THE supply & usage charges. So it LOOKS like you are getting a great "Discount".

In simple terms, you get charged at a higher rate…then the retailer provides a discount to make it look more appealing…

    • +1

Do you have some examples? I thought the supply/usage charges in NSW are regulated (by some government body) … that's why all the billing companies complete on 'discount'.

      • +1

        https://compare.switchon.vic.gov.au/ for vic.

Just look at the differences in the rates and supply charges, then the discounts.

I currently get no discount on my elec but its still the cheapest basically.

        • +1

No idea about VIC … I'm pretty sure all the billers have the same supply/usage charges in NSW.

        • @sp00ker:

I'm in VIC, around the end of 2016, I decided to browse for cheaper rates.

All I did was compare the rates (one had 0 discounts, one had 16%, one had 30%).
Just from comparing side by side the values of daily supply charge, peak and off peak rates, it was clear that the ones offering heavy discounts have higher rates.

To make it an even comparison field, I then calculated the 16% and 30% discounts off the respective rates the retailers were offering, making the rates comparable to the 0 discount rate.

What I found was the 16% discount had the lowest rates, therefore went with them. (From what I can recall, the retailer with 0 discount had lower rates than the 30% discount)

          Hope this help!

It's a highly competitive market so the retailers are always offering credits/discounts…for the more relaxed bargainers out there,I suggest you contact your retailer, say you are browsing the market for cheaper rates, and ask if they can offer better rates for you before you start looking (let us know if you gain a discount or credit)!

        • +1

          @Cyrax:

It's a highly competitive market so the retailers are always offering credits/discounts

Not really - there's only 1 electricity grid. All the retails have almost the same cost price of what they're re-selling.

The real competition is from alternative energy sources like solar, which will let you get off the grid … but that's not really economical at the moment.

  • will be chekcing the https://compare.switchon.vic.gov.au/ site as I find trying to get the actual bloody rate per KW/h and service charges out of the energy provider can be a long, drawn out process.

I switched to Dodo two years ago but I don't feel they are the cheapest any more as my power bills have been creeping steadily upwards with the same amount of use. from memory $0.34 per KW/h and daily service charges are about $1 (but don't set that in concrete).

EDIT: sigh… that site DOES NOT show the KW/h or daily service charges it's yet another bloody site which shills sales for energy providers who are paying them for (mis?) directed customers.

Two years ago I spent time on a phone call from an energy consultant adamant he could get me cheaper electricity and when I pressured him about the KW/h and daily service charges he finally admitted I was already on the best plan for me, Dodo was not one of the companies he was promoting.

    • Yes it does. Click the VIEW OFFER in green under EVERY listing. And to save the next comment, the daily service charge and kw/h are on the right hand side of the pop-up box. Remember this.

      • normally when the popups start I leave a web site.. so thank you for the info that the KW/H charges are there, but (profanity) you for being such a douche about it.
