Blackridge 2.5hp Belt Drive Air Compressor + 10M Hose + 14pc Accessory Kit $399 (Save $282.94) @ Supercheap Auto

100

I had to look at this twice to ensure it was correct. It's an awesome price for a belt-drive compressor, considering they're often $600+. If bought separately the compressor is $514, the hose $38.97, and the accessories $128.97.

I've been in the market for an air compressor for a little while now and had just about resigned myself to the fact I'd have to settle for a direct-drive model. I stumbled across this in-store today but they didn't have any stock left, so I checked online and I'm able to order one in.

Shipping is extra but you can click & collect if you have an SCA store nearby.

  • what is the big advantage of belt drive over direct drive?

    • Chiefly, it's the amount of noise generated and recovery time. Direct drive compressors can be quite loud and 'clunky' when they cut in and out, plus the duty cycle (i.e. how fast it is to recover from low pressure) is often faster in a belt drive. (This specific model is twin-cylinder, so it's definitely going to be quicker to pressurise than a single-cylinder one.)

Supposedly, a belt drive is supposed to last longer as well but in the low-end consumer models I'd be willing to wager it doesn't matter a lot. That would probably be more to do with how well the unit is maintained, irrespective of what mechanism it uses.

      • Even a cheaper belt drive will last longer. For a direct drive to work as fast as a belt drive means that it needs to run at a much higher speed (the byproduct is that the direct drive ones are also louder). There's no advantage of a direct drive that I know of, apart from cost.

  • If you don't need a belt drive, you can get a combo deal with the equivalent direct drive model and a bigger kit for $283: http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/BonusBuy/br-2-5hp-hi-flow-a…

Probably an even better deal, about 50% off.

  • If you are going to paint a car in your garage get the belt driven. If you just want to rattle your nuts off or blow air up a hole get the direct.

  • Am I missing something… This is what I see on SCA catalogue

Black Ridge 2.5HP Hi-Flow Air Compressor Combo

    $284 (SAVE $314.97 / 50%)
    Starts Wed, 03 May. 2017 - Ends Sun, 14 May. 2017
    2.5HP Electric motor
    40 Litre tank capacity
180 Litres/min FAD (Free Air Delivery)
Kit includes: 1/2” impact wrench, 3/8” ratchet wrench, 150mm air hammer

Is this a different compressor deal to the one on this bargain? Is this one better?

    • +1

The compressor included in the $284 combo is a direct drive compressor, not belt drive like in this deal.
See Chazzozz's post above for an idea of the differences.
The belt drive compressor will be quieter and has a larger tank, but free air delivery is lower than the direct drive one.
