The best price that I have come across for this recently launched model so far. Entry level phone but very good bang for the buck. Check the detailed specs on the above web-link.

  • What is an entry - level phone? Not being facetious, genuinely trying to understand what features you would expect.

    • +8

While RAM and ROM aren't too bad, the specs of the phone aren't top of the range. For example, processor, camera quality, screen glass, etc to name a few. There's no worst or the best phone, but the price generally reflects overall package. I feel that Xiaomi offers good value for money spent and more so true in this phone's case.

While RAM and ROM aren't too bad, the specs of the phone aren't top of the range.

its $200. expectations have to be lowered at this price range.

        • +2

Lol, that's exactly what he is saying.

        • @stonkered: wasn't direct at virhlpool as such moreso to those expecting everything top of the line for next to nothing.

        • @xoom:

Ah ok , sorry man :)

Didn't downvote you by the way (not that I think votes matter but just saying).

5.0 inch capacitive screen,2.5D curved glass, HD 1280x720 pixels

          CPU:Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 Octa Core 1.4GHz; GPU:Adreno 505

3GB RAM, 32GB ROM, expandable memory up to 128GB with microSD

IMO this is midrange with some high end features and some disappointments.

eg. 720p is kind of old hat when 1,080p has been around for ages.

the cpu gpu is very mid range… you see other phones with 2.0ghz 8 cores etc.

3/32 is definitely what I would call 'standard' these days… 2/16 is just not acceptable.

The cameras I dont care too much about, everyone is 13mp/5mp these days and these things dont mean much as everyone should know.

There's better buying if you are careful. To me $200 is too much to pay for a 720p phone.

        • @tonyjzx:
And your picks are $200-$300 ?

          @Bargin Boy:

Which better phone would you recommend for $190 (AUD) generally? I think this is one of the best options in that price range (among known brands). I could be wrong and happy to be corrected.

        • @virhlpool:
I dont know, that's why Im asking @tonyjzx what is better value ?

        • +1

          @virhlpool:
The Redmi Note 3 (Snapdragon) 3/32 is a great phone and just as cheap if you can get it on sale, had mine for 2 years now.
Great Battery Life still, and running LineageOS fine now.

        • @Spooderman: Is it superior to Redmi 4X 3/32? Also, it has bigger screen while Redmi 4X is for those who like 5 inch screens.

        • +2

@virhlpool: It's pretty on par hardware wise, but due to the popularity of the Redmi Note 3 there is a lot larger community of help and custom roms, as I said Cyanogen/Lineage supports few Xiaomi devices and the Note 3 is one of them.
So yes, in my honest opinion the Redmi Note 3 is superior to the new Redmi 4X.

        • @Spooderman: I have the same one, for almost just as long. Was it hard to flash Lineage on there, and does everything work?

The worst phones I've had to flash were HTC. You had to go to their website, register for a key, do some other weird crazy shit, and I've bricked some, then brought them back to life. Pain in the arse. Totally not worth the effort with HTC.

        • +1

@flaminglemon: Apart from needing to get permission from Xiaomi to unlock the bootloader (takes up to 10 days usually) to start the process, the rest was all relatively painless.

i own the white gold version of the 4 prime model for about the same price back in feb since, i test these things, that aint entry level phones, they are mid range phones, entry level is snapdragon 4XX series which is this 4X model, hence if it is the 4 not 4X series i it works well compare to my mi-5 what is does better over mi5 is its battery life, it last two to three days vs mi5 one day, the 625 chip is more than enough in handling many software even games, but i would not push it with 43X series on gaming.
the smart phone industry has enter the same era which software is heavily lacking behind hardware being throw out by hardware makers. Windows 8/10 runs smoothly in machines with 8GB ram and 2011 era CPU running SSD shows how powerful those core 5 2nd era CPUs are at the time. and Smartphone hardware has now reach the same era where 4 to 6 gb ram are more than enough for any OS three years down the track can come up with, therefore 3GB ram can survive at least two years, those 6 to 8 core CPUs are more than enough to handle those apps.

this 4X and similar price level devices are great business / casual phones, powerful enough to handle most non gaming software, what this phone lack is top quality camera module. given the lot of ram they have, loading software in memory makes them feel as fast as flagships and only when u need to access likes of photos that the slow storage memory shows their flaws.

this phone and its 4X note counterpart is great for elderly and teens, business people that their battery counts more than gaming fps. i would recommend the better CPU 4X note or 4 prime for 10 to 20 more. i assume the 4X model and 4A models be dropped in OS support pass android 7.

just started using my redmi 4x 2/16GB, amazing phone for 140 aud !!

    • It's $140 USD, $196 AUD.

      • i bought the redmi 4x 5inch 2GB/16GB (AS WRITTEN IN MY ABOVE COMMENT) one month ago for 140AUD delivered from aliexpress, im using it right now

        • Does it support 3G/3G or 4G/3G simultaneously in dual SIM's now that 2G networks are being turned off??

        • @TilacVIP: not sure i only have one sim. I think it might support 3g/4g since the snap 435 has a newer modem??

  • +1

I have a Redmi Note 3 with a faulty usb charging port, and I can't find anyone in Sydney to fix it. Only option is to send back to China I've found.

    • +9

Had the same issue. I just ordered a replacement part for sub $10 of aliexpress and fixed it myself. Cheaper than postage to send it back.

    • +3

That can happen with many other brands which don't have local repair support.

    • +2

It's not that they can't fix it, it's more that they don't have the replacement parts. Buy it yourself online and if you can't replace it yourself, you can ask those mobile phone service to install it for you

  • +1

Correct price from the current MasterCard rate is $189.88 AU. GeekBuying's rate is wrong.

    • I paid $196 AUD just a few hours back excluding Cashrewards.

      • +2

If you pay in USD with a card without currency conversion fees set to use its own rate in PayPal you will get very close to what I said.

If you pay with PayPal's own rate, a card with conversion fees or the inflated Gkb rate then you will get $196.

        • Thanks for clarification. As an associate, do you genuinely reckon this phone is a good value for money?

        • +3

@virhlpool: I'd consider it to be a midrange phone and like most Xiaomi phones… very good value for quality and hardware.

  • +1

Hate to play the "devils advocate here", but no band 28 for this bad boy. Has B5 for the best Vodafone 4G can offer though.

    • +2

yeah no band 28 kills these deals for me, i have a 12gb data plan so use a lot of data and like to get it quick as possible , with b28 aggregation it's even much faster than my adsl2 at home. aliso like the coverage inside buildings especially if seated away from windows or on the toilet, worst one used to be trains at stations but more seem to have added b28 on sandringham line so now get coverage where there used to be none when train pulls into some stations heck even platform 13 flinders now has b28 coverage when in a carriage where there used to be none.

      • I like your summary on B28 in the city, but for us regional/rural dwellers it can mean the difference between getting any signal, or none at all ( or at least some 4G rather than no 3G/4G,

Talking about the Sandringham line brings back some fond memories of my early adult life, Phraran and South Yarra were my stations lol.

The comment on red series is not really good in China. And I doubt that they will provide warranty for Aussie users.

    • +1

these phones are priced if you are in australia in the throw away category if they break …… how many weeks would you wait for a replacement without having bought another phone. or cost of tracked postage for. return. we have 2 xioami phones redmi note 4 used by my son and a note 2 that is collecting dust ….. if his phone breaks i doubt warranty claim from china would suit his urgency for a phone.

      • -1

yep exactly, these sub 200 phones are meant to be used for maybe one year then replaced

        • +1

Not really. I am using another cheapie model called Moto E. Sub $200 and going strong for 3 years now. My partner had to get her iPhone 6S repaired in the due course but my Moto E just won't give up. Too sturdy for the price. “Cheap = Not long lasting” is a misconception. Nokia proved it wrong long back with its 3310 model.

        • +2

the Redmi note 4 is sealed, not a user replaceable battery unless you crack it open and own a soldering iron, many phones are going this way to make them smaller. As the battery ages, depending on use and times recharged, if it has Australian warranty, you can get a new battery for nominal fee, apple swapped on the spot, these Chinese phones …… need to find one of those "repair places" that does car keys, shoes, and phones or send back to china. I used to get the batteries replaced in the plazas in Singapore and China when on holidays.

These phones are fine if you playing games and passing time and if it breaks … tough …. if they form part of your business and you loose opportunities when it's not working, you might look at the value saving a few bucks brings compared to possible lost business.

I'm fine with my 10 year old having a Xiaomi, so he gets kicked from his clash clan because he wasn't active in wars ….. I wouldn't use one personally for work ….. can't afford to be without a phone for more than a day.

        • @garage sale: Sport on!

    • warranty only if you send them back, not cheap.

      • I thought PayPal covers up to 4x/yr postage for returns back to seller?

        • good luck with that process.

        • @petry:

          Bad experience?

  • +2

have this phone (3gb/32) for a week now, absolutely fantastic. faster than my Samsung S5. camera is great. best value for around $200. although I bought mine off eBay from seller 7272wil (paid $230) he's giving 12 month warranty and i only pay postage for phone back to Sydney. phone came with no bloatware/chinaware and miui global rom 8.2 but I updated ota to 8.2.4.0. miui interface is clean and simple. battery lasts me 2 days. will never pay big money for top end phone ever again.
just to clarify I bought the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4x

    • +2

Note 4x runs 625 which is some 30 to 40 percent better than 435 at times, camera module on the 5 in 4x may or may not be worst than the note 4x o 4 prime.
Recommend the 625 based units over the 435 based units

      • +1

the 5inch phone is still plenty powerful since it runs at 720p, plays games fine on snapdragon 435

    • +1

I have purchased Redmi 3 from the same supplier in eBay and touchscreen is completely dead within 10 months. Tried to contact supplier through eBay and their warranty email and no response. I googled them and it looks like I'm not the only one not getting response re warranty claim.

I'm considering Redmi 4x as a replacement for my parent as there isn't a requirement to have a high spec phone.

  • Xiaomi Redmi 4 Pro with FullHD screen and a better CPU is only US$151 (US$141 with 7% cashrewards cashback)
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Original-Xiaomi-Redmi-4-Prim…

    • No official global version available anywhere though.

      • The phone comes with Official Global Firmware according to the description.

        http://en.miui.com/thread-471064-1-1.html
(Redmi 4 Prime and Redmi 4 Pro is the same phone)

        • +1

I mean Redmi 4 Pro supports even lesser network frequency spectrums than this phone. By global version I meant more in this aspect and not in terms of firmware. This one is an official global version of Xiaomi and hence it supports more bands. You can compare. :-)

    • Yes, for the screen resolution. $26 USD higher though. It doesn't seem to support B40/ B41 spectrum (I haven't compared others) which I need for 4G for the countries I travel to.

      • Redmi 4 Pro does support /B40:2300/B41:2555-2655MHz

  • One last question before pulling the trigger: Is it the cheapest phone with the best bang for buck currently on sale? Or I could get a better deal elsewhere?

    • +1

I think Redmi 4 Pro is a better choice, see my comments above.

      • +1

Do you have any bad experience with Aliexpress? Do their products arrive on time?

The specs on the Redmi 4 Pro is better than the Redmi 4X, that's for sure!

        • +1

ordered 9/5, arrived 15/5 via DHL. No bad experiences but standard delivery can be 4+ weeks on items.

        • +1

Aliexpress is similar to ebay, you need to carefully check seller's rating and customers feedback before ordering.

If something goes wrong, you can always open a dispute. Aliexress customer support is pretty good, in most cases you'll get your money back.

      • Could you have a look at this deal, it's slightly cheaper and I don't see any difference: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Original-Xiaomi-Redmi-Note-4…

        • It's a larger note…
