For anyone interested, similar non-SMR HDDs can be pulled from the external drives as per this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/303459 That particular deal has expired however the drives are still available for only about $5-20 more depending how many you purchase and if you select USD or AUD at the checkout. I ordered four HDDs in two orders of two to save on import taxes then selected USD and they came out to $284.93 AUD per drive including Shipping.

    • You might be able to get them slightly cheaper if you buy from BNH - assuming you can figure out how to use the free shipping code from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/303900

Also note they have the 6GB for $159 USD, which is a reasonable trade off $ per TB

Different Warranties on External to barebone drives. Especially when you remove from enclosure

      • Yes, understood but when buying multiples for $82 less per drive you can easily afford to buy or justify buying an extra HDD in case anything fails over the warranty period (possible but unlikely) and still be in front!

        • I made that mistake with 4x seagates and was only 1 yr warranty when removed from enclosure vs 3 yrs in the enclosure, and having to put back in enclosure before sending back hassles.

        • @asa79: It's quite interesting hearing stories such as these. I've built up literally dozens and dozens of NAS boxes over the years… the early ones were Plug n Play commercial products like 2 & 4 bay ReadyNAS but the majority have been Xpenology boxes based on old i5 HP PCs over the last 3-4 years for work, friends, family & myself. Out of all the HDDs I've ever bought both in WD & Seagate and across all capacities from 500Gb through to 8TB and sourced bare or in external enclosures (about 50/50) I've only ever had one drive fail in over 12 years. Most if not all the failures in the first 5 years were due to the ReadyNAS PSUs or Mainboards dying but I still haven't had a single Xpenology based NAS fail… actually, I tell a lie… I had a Power Supply fail in one of them and that was because it was an 6-7 year old mini HTPC (a Shuttle from memory) because that's what my friend wanted to use. Took those drives out and put them into another PC and bingo, all data was still there and the NAS was back up and running in no time.

So yeah, I'm not sure why people have such bad luck with HDDs when I've had nearly a flawless record with them (touch wood). Temperature or vibration damage perhaps? I dunno. Seems odd though.

        • @SteveAndBelle: I had 4 Seagate 4TB die pretty much one after another, I think it was becuase they were 7200 drives and the heat of them next to each other caused them to fail maybe.

But since going WD RED in place of them havent had a issue yet, touch wood, and still running Samsung F2 2TB in other server without issues. Green's always failed for me, they werent even worth the hassle

    • Good work dude.

  • nvmnvm

  • ITS 380 AUD, but still good deal

  • Would just like to point out this drive is available at Newegg for $363 AUD with free shipping https://www.newegg.com/global/au/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N…

    • Are you able to confirm the free shipping? or is there a coupon code for free shipping?

Total price with shipping on Newegg is $392.43 AUD compared to Amazon at $380 AUD

  • What's the noise level like on these?

  • EDIT: NVM seems to be very low risk

  • Don't know if you realise, but the HGST 8TB 7200 drives are currently $279.99 from Newegg. I think I'd pay the extra few $$ for the RMP upgrade. And I do like my HGST drives.

    • Extra few $$s? They're $399.00 AUD and that excludes shipping!
