  • Nice find

  • Good deal. Especially if you shop at Woolies :)
How do you find the lack of band 28(700)? Do you get any 4G signal and how reliable is it?

    • No idea why you were negged. Gave you a "+" to help out.

      • Cheers.
Might have got a neg due to the fact that the AU version of the Oppo does support band 28.
But a comment saying that would have been much more helpful!

    • My Xiaomi has no Band 28. Yes, it sometimes drops to 3G, but it's almost always on 4G. Out in the country, I always have a connection. I can get by without Band 28, and I constantly need an internet connection.

  • can you use wish card for this one ?

    • +1

I tried following through with an order but got to the credit card entry point and still no option to use Wish Card vouchers which is a pity seeing as I can get 5% off the cost of those through RAC (WA), potentially saving another $28.50 :( Maybe they would do this over the phone?

      • Thanks for the information

  • I am still being charged $10 delivery

Nvm got the delivery off in the next step. Doesn't say gift card amount though.

  • Edited
My previous comparison was based on US/Intl specs, not AU specs.

Tossing up between this and the Moto G5 Plus
    Similarly specced phones.

    Oppo R9s advantages

    • Better front camera
    • 64GB vs 32GB storage
    • 4GB vs 3GB Ram
    • Thinner
    • Full aluminium body
    • Amoled 5.5" screen (If preferred)
    • USB type C (If you consider this a plus)
    • E-compass

    Moto G5 Plus Advantages

    • $100 less
    • NFC
    • Android 7.0 vs 6.0
    • Close to stock Android experience
      Thanks mathre42

The storage differences are not a deal breaker since I don't store a lot on my device and both can be increased with SD card.
The RAM beyond 3GB doesn't make any difference on benchmarks and probably only relevant if you are heavily multitasking or gaming.
I could also take or leave the USB-C.

So for me it boils down to, would I pay an extra $100 bucks for a better selfie camera, all metal body and slighly larger Amoled screen and compass, at the expense of NFC? I love the idea of NFC but practically I would not use it very often.

I think my answer is probably, yes I would.

Any other opinions on this comparison?

    • I brought the R9S back in Feb. I've had enough of their colour OS and given the Oppo R9s to my wife and taken my S5 back of her.
I did use NFC before buying the Oppo 9Rs and thought I wouldn't miss it but I did. I've grown to use it more since getting the S5 back, my wallet is thinner because the cards are in android pay.

The second thing was that the S5 can present bar codes that are scanned really well. The R9s left a lot to be desired in fact couldn't be read at Coles or Woolies petrol. Not big deals but my wallet is even thinner because the store cards are back in and being used.

The colour OS really represent iOS, so much so that I saw a review that a person switched from Apple to the R9S and thought it was great because it was so different. When giving it back to my wife I asked her she says its ok, and she has been used to iOS before having my S5.

There was also an issue with dropping connection and it seemed localised to telstra so not super happy with that.

Its the little things that make a difference for me.
      Enjoying my old S5 again!

Thanks. Nothing better than first hand experience.
How was the camera? It's supposed to be pretty good.

        • The camera is pretty good front and back hard to fault.

I agree with flaminglemon having frequent OS upgrades outweighs the hardware advantages.

I mean the S5 is running 6.0 Mashmellow so is Oppo. The S5 came out in 2014? The Oppo should have updated on release not left it this long (and still waiting).

Why would someone neg this comment??

        • @stuckster: My apologies it was me I clicked to early when I did and tried to un neg it. But it seems I can't?

I meant to say the other bad thing with the R9S was vibration was hopeless. A bit of googling seems to reveal a bit of a trend from OPPO.

    • I would say the benefit of having frequent OS updates and upgrades will outweigh the hardware advantages of similar specced phones.

I don't know why people rave about the Oppo. Yes, they're good, yes they're well priced, but there are better, cheaper Chinadroids out there. Xiaomi and Motorola, are prime examples.

      • Motorola is notoriously slow at releasing OS updates. Don't know about Xiaomi. What is your experience with Oppo's updates?

        • I personally don't have an Oppo (I have a Xiaomi Redmi Note 3), but my in-laws have Oppos. They get notifications for updates… but they never update their phones.

I'd say they're on par with Xiaomi in terms of updates.

        • @flaminglemon:
Oh, so you're saying the Oppo updates are good. Sorry, wasn't clear.

  • FYI, Oppo R11 will come out in the next few days.

    • Out in Australia or China?

      • China first usually, then other countries.

        • Yeah so I guess a few months until it's available in Australia. Unless you buy grey.

  • SD625…. why not SD820 for this price… lots of phones out there…

    • Mi5, LeMax2 Pro, Axon 7, ZUKZ2, Zenfone 3, Oneplus 3 etc…

      • Great phones, but how many of them are sold by reputable AU merchants and come with AU warranty?

        • After dumping au stock for sd6xx phones next turn will be for cheap sd82x phones. Remember sd835 flagships are also coming down in prices.

I own the R9s Plus, (wife owns R9s, daughter owns A57), and while I love the build quality and the battery life (hammer it all day, and still has 75% left) and how good it feels in the hand to use, the OS leaves a lot to be desired. It starts out as one little niggle and just more and more things you find just don't work or are missing. So many features are turned off by default to get the battery life they claim. So many things are turned off and to find them, you basically need to be Sherlock Holmes.

ColorOS is like a bad mix of Miui and iOS. It's trying to be an iOS clone, there is no two ways about it, but it also almost feels like a Miui OS clone. It does neither cloning well. It's usable, but the bugs are annoying. No or intermittent notifications gets real annoying real fast. MMS not working for no reason is annoying (my phone works, wife's does not. Identical settings, identical OS and updates.) Random settings setting back to default after screen or power off. And nag screens for running apps you tell the OS to stop killing each time the screen goes off is getting old as well… and hotspotting, yep, ad that to the "doesn't work and hard to find" list…

Someone said above that the R9s had USB type C. Mine doesn't. It has Micro USB, but with a different cable. It has VOOC charging and charges very quickly. The VOOC USB plug is longer than a normal micro USB, but a normal cable will still work, it just won't fast charge.

Some upsides: The fingerprint scan is fast. Like, super fast. Almost makes me wonder if it is even working, it's that quick. It opens the phone almost instantly. A massive difference to my old Nexus 6P. The case and the screen protector already on the phone was a nice touch to get you started right out of the box.

And I agree with one of the posters above… coming from a Nexus 6P, I really miss the regular updates and the NFC. Having no NFC, I was the same, thought I wouldn't miss it, then my wife "borrows" my card without returning it before I go out and now, no money where I used to just have the phone handy…

I just hope with the new R11 series coming out, that ColorOS will go from v3.0.0 to at least 3.0.1…

TL;DR: Phone is of awesome quality let down by shitty OS overlay with annoying bugs and almost nonexistent factory support…

    • Cool. Thanks for the heads up on the OS. You're not the first person I've heard to say it is troublesome. What a shame.

    • What did you make of the vibration output? I didn't notice my phone when on silent..

      • now that you mention it, i dont think i've ever felt it vibrate… maybe another thing to add to this ever growing list.

Im just waiting for someone to get LinageOS working on this thing. They are pretty good spec wise for the price… Just this ColorOS overlay blows!

  • Has anyone received their gift card yet?
