Loved Crash on the PSone but is it worth buying again.

    • +2

You do know this isnt just a port of the PS1 game, right?

    • +4

      First, it's a remake, not a rerelease.

Second, that question would be valid if this was 15 years ago and it was releasing on the PS2. It's been over 20 years since the first one now, a kickass remake is worth paying for if you want the games.

Third, (profanity) it, keep playing the originals dude. I have them all digital on PS3 and can throw them on my PS3, PSP, Vita, Vita TV, and so on. Even have the first one on Xperia Play. That's not to mention emulation and all that jazz. You wanna play the originals, you're not exactly running low on options.

      • +9

Surprisingly, it's actually a remaster not a remake

        • +1

AFAIK, they completely remade the game. Remaking it as close to possible, or identically, isn't the same as a remaster. A remaster is George Lucas putting the Star Wars DVDs onto Blu Ray. A remake would be him refilming the movies with people who look and sound as similar as the originals.

Crash is being made from the ground up to be as similar as possible to the originals. AFAIK it has an entirely new engine, a bunch of new features (like being able to save whenever you want in Crash 1), and so on.

Even the devs don't know what to call it though. A while back they called it a reimagining, then a "new game plus" or something, and so on. It's not a remake, it is a remake, it's not a remaster, it is a remaster.

AFAIK, the game is being made from scratch to try to mimic the OGs as much as possible.

        • It's, by anyone's standards apart from Activision, a remake. But why they insist on calling it a remaster, I have no idea.

        • @OfTheOverflow:

It’s practically impossible to make a traditional remaster of the original Naughty Dog games. The original code and assets are nearly unusable. But we don’t consider this a remake. We know how much you all love the original games, so we didn’t want to fully remake them. The N. Sane Trilogy is a remaster plus.

It sounds to me like they were trying to avoid the perception that they were messing with the originals too much.

I don't mind how they described it actually. The way I see it, a remake might take the characters, setting, story and (possibly) gameplay but the rest of the game (including the level design) is made completely from scratch. Whereas remasters are just a visual/audio upgrade with minor gameplay tweaks while using the original code. This Crash Bandicoot release really does seem like something in between the two terms.

        • @TheDukeOfNukem:
Not worth it. Very dated gameplay wise and repetitive in a bad way. Was fun for the time though, a fav back in the day back in the Ps heyday. Cheers lads.

      • It was a genuine question because I liked the originals.
This is a HD remake but its the same game isn't it, or are they adding new levels?

You reminded me, thanks, I have them on the PS3 as well.

        • -3

Its not a remakes its a remaster. All the levels are new and made from scratch.

        • +2

@suicine94: but what you just described is a remake…

    • +1

You could do the smart thing and you know… wait till reviews come out before buying it

      • +8

Reviews are already out - just read posts from 1996 :P

        • +2

I remember reading reviews from good old Electronic Gaming Monthly. Those mags cost a bomb!

Used to scribble the cheat codes on a scrap paper at newsagents.

        • @xenoic: The good old days.

        • @xenoic: or when you tried so hard at being the best street fighter 2 player in nintendo at beating the computer controlled characters in the most strictest conditions and found out was a hoax in the end.

    • Of course. It's N Sane value

    • Nah. Was a huge fan of Crash Bandicoot back in the day, with alot of memories. With that said, the platforming doesnt hold up and the level design is extremely repetitive and not in a good way. Some of the later ones ironically felt better gameplay wise but the first 3, you see the flaws.
      Not worth it.

Unless they do real sequels, best left in the past. Crash Bash and Crash Team Racing were great. Perhaps some would recommend the Skylanders with Crash but it looked vague, maybe that was alright.

      Cheerio.

Good price for Crash considering EB has it for $69 (lol).

    • i had pre ordered it at EB thinking the price wouldn't drop.

Once i saw this I asked my friend at EB and he said they'll price match pre release…either way great price for a great game

      • It's really bad doing this it continues to support EB Games while not supporting the company that selling at the cheaper price and EB Games will continue to take $20 off people who don't do their research. EB do this constantly and almost always overprice their new games.

EB know this and are more than happy to be "Nice" and price match knowing they'll still make a butt ton of profits from people who don't price match and so they'll never lower their prices until people start buying elsewhere.

Also JB has exclusive pre-order stuff with Crash. EB currently advertising nothing.

(profanity) it, I'll cancel my order with Base.com. With them it works out a dollar or two cheaper from the deal posted while back, but I'd rather local stock, and on day one, over a foreign label ruining the uniform rating stickers on the PS4 stack and waiting potentially a couple weeks for the thing.

    Cheers dude, ordered now.

Actually, I just realized I can use my survey site points to get JB vouchers, can't do that at Base. You just saved me 50 bucks dude.

    • Glad to hear!

  • loved the originals. definitely getting around this

  • +4

Loved the game back in the day…finally a use for those Whiskas Vouchers. Effective cost $2.50.

    • I am using my 3 whiskas vouchers to grab Logan when it comes out

Can't pick up in store, only delivered available.

    • Thanks, updated description

  • +1

My son is buying this so when he finishes it I will borrow it from him

    Bargain

    • don't spend too much

  • It's been this price for months, what's the bargain?

    • +4

      It was $59

      • Ah thanks, my mistake.

    • +5

      CTR best game ever!!!

      • +2

Crash Bash was pretty fun too :)

    • Ironic that CTR and Crash Bash hold up better then the original 3. Some of the later platformers were quite good.

      • +2

I still prefer CTR over Mario Kart :D

  • The website says store pickup unavailable. Can I preorder in store to get it there on release?

Also does anyone know if they give you the Crash PS4 theme codes on the spot?

    Thanks

    • +1

You can always pre-order a release directly in the store you want to pick it up from.

Codes are supplied in different ways. May be an additional printed receipt at the register or a card inserted into the case.

      • Thanks for the info. I just preordered in store and didn't receive any code so hopefully they are distributed on release.

  • Want to buy Crash Bandicoot. Never played them before except the tiny bit in Uncharted 4 and I was pretty bad. Is there going to be a super easy mode for lousy game players like me?

    • That level was pretty tricky so I wouldn't beat yourself up over it haha. The game's start pretty easy, and are an absolute blast!

  • was there a preorder bonus for eb? i tried looking and found nothing. maybe i'm remembering things incorrectly

    • +1

The only preorder bonus I could find was the menu themes and they are a JB HiFi exclusive. I just went to the store and dropped a 10 buck deposit. Seems I will get the code on release day.

Best to leave the first few Crash games in the past, extremely repetitive, platforming not really that good, as much as i loved the series back in the day.

Some of the later ones were alright. I think people stopped caring once the games went multisystem, which is ironic as some later ones were quite decent.

Ape Escape was cool. Spyro and Croc was decent. Gex the Gecko was decent too. But yeah, Crash's early 3 better left in the past. Ps1 was a nice system for the time, as was ps2(not for jrpgs which were overrated and dont hold up too well with dated turn based menu recycling).

Tekken should have stayed PS exclusive, big mistake on Sonys part not keeping it that way.

  • +1

    Nice DP Rapt0r

  • Crash Bandicoot, Tekken and Morrowind. What year are we in?

    • +1

1999, The Mummy is just about to be released and new the Star Wars movie about the last Jedi is just around the corner.

  • Tekken 7 $69 with COVFEFE CODE if you don't want the special edition.

    • Cheers lad.

      • That code expires an hour ago at midnight unfortunately, if you didn't purchase before then you can still use C5OZ code to get it for $75.05.

        • S'all good. Will keep that other one in mind then.

  • Tried to pre-order Crash Bandicoot in-store and was told that the price is $59.
